Does anybody know the title of the Omnibus documentry from 1978 shown in the clip posted earlier?

I don't think it had a title. Omnibus was a weekly magazine program and they did a small feature on the Casino.

The only known Wigan films are. "This England" also "Something Else", a youth prog did the small feature, and lastly "Omnibus" did a profile of the Casino.

A few more clips from the Omnibus prog are in this documentary. You'll find them at 21.26, and lastly at 38.39.

Ok We have all seen some fantastic Northern soul dancers on the scene and i'm sure we can all name several from every region. But My Nomination would be the Guy they simply called Soulie, think his mame was Mark Allis from Peterborough. Not seen him on the scene for several years now.He has featured on you tube clips of Cleethorpes weekender dance comps which are now sadly not available to view.He could do the lot .As i say many dancers have impressed me but SOULIE left me Transfixed and for me was tops.

If you have a photo I will hopefully recognise him, great idea to upload them all as there is not a lot of stuff on The Palais (as far as I know)

I think if you put. (Curly and Carl Piper dancing)on YouTube.

That might be him at Alfreton around 1990 Ian.

I remember Carl now (Super dancer) but not the guy I was referring to, the guy I was on about just stood almost still but his feet went about 100mph and I seem to think he was always in a grey suit

Well said Frankie - this thread makes for very interesting reading! Hope he drops out this week though - not happy about it all being on prime-time telly! Channel 4 & to a very small audience in the early hours is one thing, but Strictly Come Dancing & now The Greatest Dancer?? NOOOOOOOO!! 😣😥

He's through to the callbacks episode which looks like it's probably on on the 1st or 8th February after all the initial heats. Dunno how much airtime he'll get on that one though because there'll be loads of other acts in it as well. Most of them a lot more spectacular.

It'll give him a few weeks to practice , and iron his trousers...

Excellent dj and the sort of young blood the scene needs.

Agree totally but it does make you wonder where they'll come from? Certainly I can't see anyone under 40, say, watching Giovanni on the BBC and thinking "that looks like something I'd like to check out" - probably quite the opposite. Perhaps if they saw some of the clips posted here they might be interested but this is a small obscure corner of the internet that no one is going to stumble across so I don't think any remaining "underground" part of the scene is going to suffer as a result of this.

Give him his due he's got confidence levels of 1000%; dancing on his own in a brightly lit studio and in front of an audience. Not many could do that! Surround him with 20 good dancers it'd look pretty damn impressive.

I ask because I definately remember the BBC doing something on Northern Soul after the Granada This England broadcast, It would have been around 1978 and all I can recall is it had 'Interplay' being played as the backdrop to the programme and I wondered if that Omnibus documentry was the one?

I should imagine it was the Omnibus feature. I dont think all of it has ever come to light  ?  just a few clips. Maybe theres still some unseen wigan film in the TV archives that'll be discovered someday .

It was definitely omnibus.  Just been in touch with a mate who was actually shown in the film walking up the stairs to pay Mrs Woods

Tony Palmer bought all the This England footage off Granada when he put it out on DVD in 2010 so he has all of that. Anyone got the DVD? Are there any extras or is it just the film as shown? Could there be stuff he didn't include?

No, not everybody wore them and they were worn (by those who did) only for a brief period. The sad fact is that the historico-pastiche scene goers, (a lot of returnees included in that bracket) try to claim Northern soul past, present and future using this re-imagined look as an identifier/motif  for a scene that spans five decades. The lazy media love to present this clownish look too, as it is easier than historical research and very easily caricatured and ridiculed.  It's the narrow Casino-centric lens being applied once again, as if that was all the scene ever was and will be. The same happens with the music and so called top 500's, World Northern Soul Dance Championships or whatever. It's linked to the industry of Northern Soul, it reifies it for commercial/economic reasons and is not representative of Northern Soul's rich and nuanced history: which includes music, venues, fashion styles, dancing styles and more.

In Chapter 16 of this book I write about, amongst other things, the Casino-centric lens and its mis-use : https://www.equinoxpub.com/home/northern-soul/  and interestingly enough, I start with an anecdote about playing Jonathan Capree in 2005 at Middleton all-nighter...

Very well articulated Paul. It's not just the contemporary media to blame either, the media incompetence is historical.

The Omnibus feature ? How did you find that out ??  do you think the rest of the footage of Wigan still exists , apart from the couple of clips ??

Is that the midweek filming somewhere in Manchester and midweek wigan?  There is footage of one of them if you look on Youtube Sweets Something About You Baby.

I have the DVD Tony put out, none of the out takes on it just what was shown on TV if memory serves.  There is far more on YouTube.

Thats it , same clips as posted above in my earlier post " the way of the crowd doc",  then the same girl ( dark bob hairstyle) is spinning in the casino, so same film feature..Omnibus.

I tried to track it down a few years ago..someone posted footage from the doc on youtube but they had only taped the Bowie disco bit!.It needs someone to get into the archives.Loads of Omnibus on the i player but not this one.I did find some footage from an early pre Wigan club in York with a few lads in Torch badges. Also Tom Hassett has super 8 footage of Wigan which has not been seen. It is taken on the night of the filming and Dave Kilworth lent Tom his Super 8 camera.

I remember the lad with the choker type necklace dancing in Mr Ms 79/80ish, think his name is Sandy, he used to do some type of martial arts.

Sandy was from Bolton Ste of i remember rightly.  He actually held the world record for push ups or sit ups or something like that, think he won one of the dance comps at the casino

Not too sure about this. I think she’s dancing for the camera. She’s mixing up three styles of dancing with  bit of showing off thrown in. Admittedly, the tune prompts a bit of doing the fandango, but the video star has got carried away methinks. There are better video clips of her strutting her stuff at other venues.

Necklace had a black fist. Sandy wore towelling wristbands and tucked a beer towel into the waistband of his bags. Probably did more than anyone else to present a much-copied dress style as he was an eye-catching dancer with a much-copied routine of acrobatic stunts in between stints of pedestrian footwork.

Sandy Holt, he was British & European Thai Boxing champion, he trained under Master Sken, whereas I trained under Master Toddy in the late 70s early 80s. He made a career out of it whereas I liked my face the way it was!
