Just had a very exciting few minutes here in North Manchester. Armed robbery pursuit. Stolen car crashes into unmarked police car outside the house, armed robber jumps over my 6ft garden gate with armed police officer in pursuit whom crashes through the gate and disappeared over my back garden fence snapping a tree in the garden. In minutes more armed bobbies, helicopter and cars everywhere. Then CID and SOCO two offenders taken in to custody. Waiting on repairs to the back gate. Hopefully a new one

Help with song.....bird song that is....just been woken up by a tweeting bird singing "chip chip chip...di...derrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......chip chip chip...Di...derrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr", over and over.....  Any ideas?  I've never heard that "track" before?

Looked out of the window but it's not quite light. Can't see the feathered fluffball responsible for the din.  I'm hoping it might be something rare and exotic, but it's probably just a sparrow or something. It's very loud, drowning all the other tweetings out. I wish I could see it. 😔

It could have been the amazon amateur bad boys choir sent to wake you after their bungled picture robbery at mine yesterday . That,s how they respond to a failed attempt instead of sending the Avon ladies with beards later with the goods

You said it was dark and you could,nt see it. Did you remember to remove your sleeping beauty mask

No, I didn't, it's a heavy duty one, and the pliers are in the garage.  🙄 X

Magpie ?

Ste.

No, it wasn't a magpie. I'm very familiar with those, they make a right racket.  It was probably a small bird to be honest. It sounded small but really shrill.  I've been through all the finches from the link Veedub kindly posted but no luck yet!

That will be why it was still dark Mrs.

I,m really at a loss as to what this bird could be especially with your very explicit description  ( is explicit the right word ) ? X

Really Shrill. Try a Wren

Well, I too am at a loss? I've done all the finches, the sparrows, thrushes, blackbird, wren, robin....drawn a complete blank. I've never heard that song before. Next time I see you, I'll sing it, as long as you don't laugh....which you will....but I'll pretend you're not. 🙄.  Thanks for everyone's inputs. I'll keep listening in the hope the ornithological alien reappears to re-tweet! 👍🏼

Mrs. Me laugh, as if i would.😇 Anyway we will have that much catching up to do we will probably forget , you may even forget to sing. 😥 Its part of the dawn chorus what ever it is and may i suggest that you set your alarm before the birds get up and sing to them to see if they like getting woken by a big bird (5ft  7 1/2" ) and as your already awake you could record the offending bird song and post it on here to see if anyone can identify the culprit. I've listened to a few tracks by Wren on You Tube now, and it does say they're a little bird with a big voice, unlike me....a big bird with a very little voice!

Of all the bird song I've investigated since I heard it "played out" this morning, it's a strong contender. I've set my alarm for 4am and I'm going to go and lie in the garden with a hot water bottle and a sleeping bag to see if I can witness a live performance, which I'll try to record.  Thanks Mustang 👍

It's a wren!!! The song wasn't quite the same, but it chirruped and then the drilling sound.  It landed on a branch of the laurel. Teeny tiny thing with hardly any tail feathers.  So thanks to Mister Winsford and Mr Mustang, the puzzle is solved. I'm still in the garden with a hot water bottle and a beast of a blanket, clasping a steaming hot cup of Tetley.....yeah😃!!!!

Hi Guys & Gals

Here is a picture that I’ve extracted from a 2 second I-phone video that I took of a little Robin that visits us quite a lot. It struggles to get on the feeders with its little legs so usually waits for other birds (blue tits & goldfinches like the one pictured) to knock seeds onto the floor but I guess that day it couldn’t be arsed waiting

He's a very clever wily old Winsford!  Just like Hector.

Mind you, Mr Mustang came up with the goods too...so two smug Saturday soul dudes to deal with.

Weird sighting lying here just now was seeing two huge black birds (probably crows) above me in the sky, escorting another much paler browny bird of similar size and wing span, making a sqwuaking noise? Looked like a bird of prey!  The three of them flew together, closely, with the browny one sqwuaking it's bonce off. It's all happening in the garden!  I'm not sure I can take much more of this wild excitement!  It was like they were bouncers escorting it off the premises. And now I'm being dive bombed by Angela and Alphonse, the wood pigeons. They probably want to land but think I'm a giant grizzly, which I always am first thing in the morning 🙄

Great photos,Robins love the suet pellets with mealworm mixed in,

they really like a 50/50 mix of plain and berry suet pellets, good point

around the small bird access when feeding,to help with this i have a

tray feeder on the bottom of the peanut feeder,i put a mix of all kinds

in for all the birds, they all love it and all look really healthy.

The robins watch and a particular buddy/mate comes really close and

waits till i drop some suet pellets on the floor and picks them up excitedly.

Why thank you Mrs wellie boats. Smug Saturday soulie Ste here.  I hope you managed to survive all that excitement in the early hours and you stayed safe from any creatures of the night. It sounds like to crows escorting a bird of prey away from their territory . Where the wings like fingers sticking out at the end if so it would probably been a Buzzard. See my earlier post for clue, if they where more ponited it would probably be a female sparrowhawk , that,s going off the similar size clue. X

Brilliant view of Venus in a gorgeous evening sky the other night and as we sat in the garden this afternoon a cheeky chubby baby blackbird getting bathing lessons, its mum was sat watching nearby, this went on for a good 10 minutes and us being there didn`t bother them at all.

Sorry, poor quality photo. Snapped it a while back as it was a strange looking bird. Quite big, even though it looks young?

Just wondering if any of the bird experts on here can tell me what it is....?

Looks like a juvenile blackbird, although it's difficult to be sure.

It was big though. Much bigger than an adult blackbird.

I suppose it could have very fluffed up feathers if it was a juvenile?

Beak shape suggests a blackbird, but yes, I did think it looked a bit too big. Could have fluffed up its feathers, if it was cold. Maybe someone else will have a better idea of what it is.
