Greedy Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 (edited) Hi can anyone she'd any light on this unusual label release. As you can see mine is the one with label scan on discogs. But with a bit of care I have managed to peel the tape off which was covering the label. And it is credited to the ideals and music by the outlaws. Which I haven't seen on either of the label releases. I was just curious if it was just a local release before it got onto the US billboard charts and was released on Cortland and Satellite (different mix). Many thanks Mick Edited August 4, 2019 by Greedy Mick
The Yank Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 The Concord label was owned by Howard Pittman who was a member of the Doo Wop group the Five Chances. Once the record became a big local hit, he wasn't able to keep up with the demand and sold the master for "...Gorilla" and the group's contract to Cortland.
Greedy Posted August 5, 2019 Author Posted August 5, 2019 Many thanks for that. As always someone on here will know all these little bits of information . Mick
Joesoap Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Wasn't this one of Pittsburgh DJ's Mad Mike (Metrovich)'s sounds? Am fairly sure I heard some of his plays got bootlegged for his audience, Could it be that?
The Yank Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 Concord was the original label for "The Gorilla". Here's an article from Cashbox (August, 1963) -
Fourmintsover Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 I like to play the Gorilla alongside the Donald & The Delighters also on Cortland. Cool to see the original local Chicago release here.
Blackpoolsoul Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 Great history of them here (assuming it's complete and correct) https://doo-wop.blogg.org/ideals-3-c26503252
