Hi Dave

I know that this may be wrong, but I instantly thought about Rain "Out Of My Mind", wasn't that first Issued in Canada.

It was obviously issued in the States though and may not fit the "Soul" criteria

the allen sisiters.....maybe

nah... would say they def fall into the done a single soul -ish style 54 by accident category

once had misfortune of buying a bulk buy of unnamed 45s by them

thinking was that they only had so many 45 60s releases so good chance downtown was in the pile

unfortunately it turned out they also were quite proflic in 70s  :D

not sure if canadain but eddie spencer springs to mind

there was a interesting article info wise on arc records (sure were toronto based ?) somewhere on net but can't find it

There was a great soul/funk outfit called The Majestics who had some releases on Arc.

Info from The Canadian Pop Encyclopedia

https://jam.canoe.ca/Music/Pop_Encyclopedia

John Crone (saxophone)

Orlando Guierri (trombone)

Shawne Jackson (vocals)

Brian Lucrow (trumpet)

Wes Morris (drums)

Eric Robertson (keyboards)

Eugene 'Jay' Smith (vocals)

Bobby Starr (guitar)

Russ Strathdee (saxophone)

Chris Vickery (bass)

Jay Jackson (vocals)

Dave Konvalenko (guitar)

William Cudmore (saxophone)

Fred Keeler (guitar)

This Rhythm 'n' Blues/Soul group started out in 1965 as Jay Smith And The Majestics but changed name to Shawne and Jay Jackson and The Majestics when Shawne's brother, and ex-Pharaohs member, Jay Jackson joined the group. Shawne Jackson had previously played in Jack Hardin And The Silhouttes; Fred Keeler was brought in from David Clayton-Thomas And The Shays; Drummer Wes Morris started out in Jon And Lee And The Checkmates; Crone had played with Bobby Kris; Cudmore had been a member of Robbie Lane And The Disciples.

They released several albums and singles on the ARC Records labels and their version of Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music", on the compilation 'CTV's After Four' while "Respect" was found on the Yorkville 'Evolution' compilation.

The group split up in 1969.

Shawne Jackson would later play with The Stone Soul Children alongside future Bush member Prakash John before embarking on a successful solo career in the 1970's and would marry Domenic Troiano; Starr went on to play with Ronnie Hawkins And The Hawks and Robbie Lane & The Disciples, while his replacement, Dave Konvalenko, would subsequently play with Bobby Kris And The Imperials; Fred Keeler would later form Jericho; Vickery would later join Damage; Robertson would become a top session player for Murray McLauchlan, record several easy listening solo records and did frequent musical arrangement jobs for bands like Klaatu and the CBC; Eugene Smith had a successful solo career as well.

Fantastic album sleeve too!

ah the get out of kitchen Shawne jackson, didnt know she was Canadian

heres some blurb, can scan lp if anyone after a look

After signing with Playboy Records in 1974, she had a Top-10 hit in Canada with "Just As Bad As You" which was produced by Domenic Troiano (her future husband). A Domenic Troiano full-length album on RCA and several less successful singles followed in 1976. Jackson would also be nominated for a Juno Award.

In 1977 Jackson returned to school to continue her passion for clothing design which she had grown fond of while in the US. Though she removed herself from the spotlight of stage performing she returned to music in the 1980's singing for television shows and commercials and even released another single on the El Mocambo Records label. She was also an in-demand session vocalist for many Canadian acts alongside Colina Phillips and Sharon Lee Williams. She would record a song from the musical 'Yuppies' called "Images" with Sharon Lee Williams in 1985.

Jackson landed a role as a waitress in the Canadian TV show 'Night Heat' with husband Domenic Troiano supplying the theme song.

Singles

1974 Just As Bad As You/He Maybe Your Man (Playboy/Quality) GT-223

1975 Get Out Of The Kitchen/Don't Wait For Tomorrow (RCA) PB-10428

1976 Don't Wait For Tomorrow/T'Eloigner De Mon Coeur (RCA) PB-50171 1980 Can't Stop Thinking About You/Come Back Boy (El Mocambo) ESMO-504 1983 Loveline (6:18)/Loveline (short version) (MCA)

Isn't there a connection between her and Andre Gagnon who got plays back in the day with "Wow" on Decca? Sorta awful proto disco if I remember.

I think they had a kid together.

Godz

There might be a connection, I'm not sure.

Canada has had a few mentions on here recently regarding Soul Music.

I keep finding certain records on a Canadian release, although neither expensive to purchase/Valuable, scarce etc

I still find a place in my collection for them. Canadian releases appear to be out of favour somehow :)

That Canadian encylopedia is worth a look at. Here's another entry:

Shirley Matthews

Born in Harrow, Ontario, Matthews started her singing career in school and church. At 19 she made money singing while working a full time job at the Bell Telephone business office in Toronto. She sang at high school dances in the early sixties which led to a recurring gig at Club Bluenote rotating with David-Clayton Thomas, Shawne Jackson-Troiano and The Mandala where she would frequently be visited by touring musicians such as Stevie Wonder and The Supremes. An associate of The Four Season's manager Bob Crewe and Red Leaf Records owner Stan Klees spotted Matthews at the Bluenote and she was whisked away to New York City to record her first single "Big Town Boy" after signing a recording contract with Red Leaf. The record went Top-10 and she won a 1964 Juno Award for Female Vocalist Of The Year. She released several follow-up singles but only "Private Property" made any waves. In 1967 she was married to became Shirley Vedder and gave up her career in singing. She has spent most of her adult years living with her family in Unionville, Ontario and was the executive assistant at a racquet ball club there and an accomplished player herself.

Notice another mention for Shawne Jackson.

Singles

1963 Big Town Boy (Red Leaf/Tamarac) 1964 He Makes Me Feel So Pretty (Red Leaf/Tamarac) 1964 Private Property (Red Leaf/Tamarac) 1965 Stop The Clock (Red Leaf/Tamarac)

Mary Saxton definitely one - spoke with her a few months ago and she still lives in Canada

Allen Sisters - strangely enough recorded their only 'soul' tune in London at the Decca recording studio I think, but it was only released in Canada - like Mike said very prolific artists in both 60's and 70's.

Dom Triano was lead singer with Mandala. I have a couple of their singles on canadian Kapp which have a (blue eyed) soul sound to them. Troiano had a 12" release (We all need Love?) which George Reid used to play on his Soulville show. He later joined the James Gang and The Guess Who and as a guitarist worked with Diana Ross.

Having read his bio

https://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/reviews1/joearchive2.htm

I've just realised after 40 years that it was George Olliver who sang lead on the Mandala records so scrub the first line of this missive.

Troiano wasn't the lead singer for Mandala but I can't remember who was. They had one LP titled Soul Crusade that was released on Atlantic in the U.S.I believe that part of it was recorded in the U.S. with Arid Mardin producing.

Loads of Canadian soul singers throughout the 60's & 70's, Canada had a sizeable West Indian community.

One of the best, if not the best, soul/funk/jazz/(quality)hip hop magazines on the planet called "Wax Poetics" a year or two back did some features on the whole Canadian scene.

One great 45 that springs to mind is by a guy called Jayson Hoover , does a cracking uptempo version of James Carr's "Freedom Train" !

Aye up Stu, I know you're asking about 60's but what about Stan Martin - "Big Mouth Woman" on Shatta from '75. He might have been living in Canada in the 60's although he is of Carribbean origin as you know. See ya on the 27th in Spondon.

another 70's one is Phil (Bumpy) Dino - who does a good version of 'Dark End Of The Street' on his Crazy Love - Crazy Feeeling' album.
