Guest Trevski Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 Whats the going rate for a Clara Hardy "I dream of you" now, after all the 'copies turnin' up' stuff??
Simon T Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 Whats the going rate for a Clara Hardy "I dream of you" now, after all the 'copies turnin' up' stuff?? £553 on Manship's auction three weeks ago. For myself, I'd move the decimal point two places to the left and want postage to be incuded in that too. Intersting to see that it can still fetch such a price with it being on ebay so much recently and not what I'd consider a seasoned classic Detroit collectors 'must have' before you die type record.

Been a copy on Pat Brady's site for over a month at £500, think a less than mint copy went through ebay a few weeks ago at around £250 - lots of copies about though!
Chalky Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 when it first turned up on ebay a mate lost out (second highest bidder), he was then offered ten copies. Can't believe anyone would pay serious money for this.
bri pinch Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 Well, nobody will now , if they're in a right mind. Come to think of it, when it was a less than 10 copy record, never a top notch detroit sound anyhow. Best, Bri.
Guest Baz Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 supprised the old 'its a boot' people aint been saying they are all boots yet though have been hearing the odd referance on lists to suggest they are, dont think i would want to pay more than £50 to be on the safe side, as there is no telling how many are about, looks like another Boss four (how ever that seems to have dissapered) danny moore, Oxford nights et all. Any one listened to the Instrumental flip? got alot of balls to it and makes it alot more uptempo perfect for a nighter
Gene-r Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 (edited) After realising it was on the Tuna label, I realised there was something fishy about the whole thing! Edited January 3, 2007 by Gene-R
John May Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 After realising it was on the Tuna label, I realised there was something fishy about the whole thing! Well that just about sums it up.......

Was told the number found was into three figures, still makes it rare compared to some of the stuff fetching daft money. Has the Boss Four ever been rare? Danny Moore and Oxford Nights were obviously different to the real thing.
Modernsoulsucks Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Hey Chalky, in what way were the Danny Moore's different to the real thing. Im sure I've posted this before but they came from a relative, cousin I think. We had the name of the writer/producer, Massingille and when next in Detroit Dave Withers checked the phone book and we got lucky. He had a few at first but turned up more over a few weeks. Had similar luck with John Merlino in phone book and got a few Dynamics "Whenever Im without you". Im sure Dave said that Greg Tommo had got to the guy first but hadn't bought all the copies of Moore 45. Maybe he didn't ask for more. No idea why!! It's no big thing but I wouldn't want anyone to think they were boots that me and Dave had pressed up. Wouldn't even know how to go about it. I think there are boots but don't they look different. I kept a copy for myself and I think it's styrene [same stuff as Maltese or M-S] and has ZTSC97530 1A and ZTSC 97531 1A stamped in run-out groove ROD

See on a few sales lists/websites 'stamped original', would sugest its saying its the real thing to me and that there are boots about, why sugest other wise Was always under the presumption that the Boss Four started off to be rare then a load turned up ?? might have been mixed up with summin else

Chalky Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Ah-ha new i went imagening it Thanks Gene dunno how true it is but was told it was a soul pack record at one time, maybe for the other side.

bri pinch Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 And probably one of the best records you,ll buy in that price range , anorl. Best, Bri.
Guest Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 And probably one of the best records you,ll buy in that price range , anorl. Best, Bri. I remember the Boss 4 when it was rare and in-demand! I also remember Betty Lloyds catching on about the same time! Mick Smith turned up with the Betty Loyds for about 70 quid each (everyone got one!) ...now that has remained popular and still commands a good price..................What about the Royal Esquires? Same sort of thing..............Quality old Wigan Cover up tune turnes up in a box.........everyone thinks there is thousands but in fact there is only a couple of hundred? In a year or 2 It becomes a tune that everyone knows......... in demand oldie?.................all fantastic tunes when they were introduced and all fantastic now! Now I have a Betty Lloyd and a Royal Esquires.............but for some reason i sold my Boss 4 years ago and I really would like it back, it is was a -fantastic tune, anyone got one for sale? I have not heard it for years but i remember it to be a great tune! Happy new year, Mossy
Modernsoulsucks Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Thank you Chalky but I think your reply should read "found" and not "pressed". I hope there's no lingering doubt there in that unconscious slip-up. And Mossy it was Dave Withers who got around 100-150 of the Betty Lloyd 45. That guy is a menace to decent collectors everywhere!! ROD
Gene-r Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 dunno how true it is but was told it was a soul pack record at one time, maybe for the other side. You mean the "dub" side? Seriously, the flip side "Space Mood" must be the earliest example of dub, as it's the instrumental of "Walkin' By" with a few electronic extras!

Gene, the B side of the Contenders "Do what you gotta do" is the same with echo etc, can't remember now but I'm sure the title has something to do with the moon. Obviously this label was owned by the same person who owned the Boss four label, Rim...this labels called Edge...rim/edge

It sounds like an early house record with a kind of electric piano thing going on! Can't recall the title off hand. Crazy record! Rich
