Guest Ninaantonia Posted July 1, 2019 Posted July 1, 2019 Hello all, I've made the grave mistake not to ask the DJ which song he was playing at the time - and I regret it to this day! There's not much I remember, but here goes - Male singer Slow to mid tempo Northern Soul One line from the lyrics: 'I'm such a clown' I've found dozens of clown-themed Northern Soul songs on YouTube but this one wasn't amongst them (I did discover many other great Clown soul songs though!). It still bugs me after all this years that I didn't ask the DJ...anyway, if anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Thank you so much. Nina

Colouredman Posted July 1, 2019 Posted July 1, 2019 What about this: Little Anthony: Call me the joker: ‘Why can't she see that it's always been me Beside her making her laugh When she's starting to cry I cheer her up when she's down Twist away every frown But still I see her with so many other guys I played the clown That's okay But she always didn't know me that way I'll be the joker And I'm laughing you see I'd like to stop, stop Getting hurt I'd walk away if I could But she knows that I wouldn't So I stay every day and pretend that she's mine I go around with a smile Though it hurts all the while To see her handing out what I know should be mine I played the clown That's okay But she always didn't know me that way I'll be the joker And I'm laughing you see I'd like to stop, stop Getting hurt I played the clown That's okay But she always didn't know me that way I'll be the joker And I'm laughing you see I'd like to stop, stop Getting hurt’
Guest Ninaantonia Posted July 1, 2019 Posted July 1, 2019 Lovely song- but it’s also not the one. Thank you anyway, Colouredman

Martyn Pitt Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 Is it a case of miss heard lyrics ... if so can I offer Ray Pollard The Drifter (male singer slow / mid tempo) seeing as the Clown options are diminishing 1

Steve S 60 Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 Bobby Garrett - I Can't Get Away "Just like Pagliaccio the clown Sometimes I'm up, sometimes down."
Guest Ninaantonia Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 I think it could have been Ray Pollard the Drifter- the lyrics don’t quite match but I could have misheard it... but- the melody is actually very close to what I remember. So- thank you very much, Martyn and to everyone else for their suggestions! I’d say I’m 90% sure it was the Drifter and I might come to realise it must be that one if all the other clown related songs don’t fit. Do keep the suggestions coming though please- I’m not a 100% sure yet and I’m enjoying discovering all the other great clown/ joker related tunes.

Guest Ninaantonia Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 Hi all- thank you to everyone who has responded so far. I’m still thinking the most likely one is Ray Pollard’s the Drifter, although I’m not a 100% sure...so please, keep the suggestions coming! I’ve discovered loads of great new tunes thanks to you guys so thank you
Guest Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 I'm pretty sure that there's a line mentioning clown in "Only the strong survive" by Jerry Butler. And if that's not the tune you're looking for......it should be, for the fantastic bass line if nothing else! (the line is "feel like a clown" at about 1:14)
