Mal C Posted May 25, 2019 Posted May 25, 2019 (edited) Was listening to ‘Al Perkins - ‘yes my goodness yes’ and remembered his partner or wife Velma Perkins also cut the side, either an unissued thing or for Lion records I cant remember, both great though... in fact didn’t al cut two versions, Or was Buddha picked up on Atco? And to turn this on the side for a moment how about: GIrl Watcher / Boy Watcher mal Edited May 25, 2019 by Mal C
Davenpete Posted May 25, 2019 Posted May 25, 2019 (edited) How about Little Mac and the Boss Sounds' answer to Wilson Pickett from the Wheel... Edited May 25, 2019 by DaveNPete 1
Davenpete Posted May 25, 2019 Posted May 25, 2019 ...Or the other side of I'd Rather Go Blind - from Etta James... 1
Davenpete Posted May 25, 2019 Posted May 25, 2019 ...And a little off topic but Johnnie Taylor and Carla Thomas' brilliant duet version of Steve Mancha (etc etc etc) - think it cost me £1.50. 1
Davenpete Posted May 25, 2019 Posted May 25, 2019 (edited) Plus of course pretty obvious, but Barbara Lynn's version of William Bell etc (much prefer WB) - Trying to love two. And Barbara Carr's god-awful version Clarence Carter's version of Messing With My Mind. Edited May 25, 2019 by DaveNPete

Guest Soulatthedale Posted May 25, 2019 Posted May 25, 2019 2 underplayed female versions of male classics
Guest Gogs Posted May 26, 2019 Posted May 26, 2019 Really good so far, lots that i've never heard before. Always thought that going by previous preferences that i would like more of the female versions but no. really love the Embers version of "It ain't necessary" But prefer the Eloise Law to Jerry Butler, which also surprised me. Keep them coming.
Concrete Posted May 26, 2019 Posted May 26, 2019 I think Doris' version trumps Clarence Carters (if only for the lack of 'burping')
Guest Soulatthedale Posted May 28, 2019 Posted May 28, 2019 What a super Soulful version of the Temps classic.

The one by Velma Perkins is unreleased at the time I think, but on the Numero Twinight comp. 1
Joesoap Posted May 28, 2019 Posted May 28, 2019 I think I only heard this for the first time on Richard Searling's radio show this week. Very showbiz / pop, maybe but absolutely excelllent! 1

Weingarden Posted May 29, 2019 Posted May 29, 2019 Wasn't the point of this not just male vs. female versions of songs but male-point-of-view vs. female-point-of-view variations on the same song? Mal C. got it right in his contributions IMO....Like this:

Lightsleeper Posted May 30, 2019 Posted May 30, 2019 Always loved these boy\girl answer records. Big favorite is Gene Chandler answers to Mary Wells with threw a lucky punch. Myself and my girl once recorded a mix of an hour or so of these records with her playing the girl records and myself playing the guy records. At the time it came out, Tony Orlando was Vice President of CBS Music. He did cut a few US hits under pseudonyms around this time but I can't see why he'd nip over to the UK to do this one...

Hmmm..pretty much a jobbing UK arranger with no notable hits to his name. Can't see why he'd get the call from New York, tbh! https://www.discogs.com/artist/335594-Harry-Roberts?filter_anv=0&subtype=Writing-Arrangement&type=Credits Edited June 2, 2019 by JoeSoap
