Jamie Records and the Oscars - Green Book Film Soundtrack

Jamie Records and the Oscars - Green Book Film Soundtrack magazine cover

The most current edition of the Philadelphia based  'The Inquirer'/ 'Philly.com' website features an interesting item...

Titled 'How a small Philadelphia record company gave an Oscar contender its sound' this feature article written by Jonathan Takiff, takes a look at how several tracks from the Jamie / Guyden setup are featured as part of the soundtrack of the current Oscar contender 'Green Book'

Philadelphia music label proprietor Frank Lipsius has been waiting decades for a high-profile, musically focused picture like Green Book to dig out some of the lost relics buried in the vaults of his family biz, Jamie Record Co.
We’re talking two-minute-and-twenty second wonders, like the soul-rocking “Letter from My Baby” (Timmy Shaw) and big-beat jam “What’cha Gonna Do” (by Bill Massey with Lea Lendon and the Rite Timers). Songs you’ve likely never heard but might think you had if you could flash back to the hits that labels were chasing in 1962, the year in which the “reluctant buddy” film is set.

The article then does go on to expand how nowadays film-related companies are using setups such as Jamie/Guyden for sourcing soundtrack tracks rather than paying high 'licencing' fees, think 'The Temptones' rather than using a 'Hall and Oates' hit

...has also worked Jamie songs into USA’s Mr. Robot (Honey and the Bees’ “These Old Memories”) and the ABC show Speechless -- using “Ain’t Got the Love (of One Girl on My Mind),” written by Barbara Mason and performed by the Ambassadors....

The full article is quite informative on this aspect and worth a walk over , it also reveals the labels most lucrative commercial placement track!

Frank from Jamie here: Thanks a lot for the support. Watch out for our series of compilations due out in Winter/Spring of 2019!

Terrific news from the Golden Globes Frank! The film scored 3 winners:

Mahershala Ali for Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture

Music or Comedy Motion Picture

Screenplay of a Motion Picture

and along with that two nominees:

Viggo Mortensen for Actor in a Musical of Comedy Film

Peter Farrelly for Director of a Motion Picture

Can't wait to see this film. Any new on the Winter/Spring compilations you refer to and maybe for  a special 45 release of an unreleased track from the compilations?

according to the below the soundtrack wasn't eligible for an 'best soundtrack oscar'

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/oscars-academy-rules-green-book-ineligible-best-original-score-1167324

Green Book, Peter Farrelly's period-piece dramedy about the black concert pianist Don Shirley (Oscar winner Mahershala Ali) and his less cultured white driver Tony Lip (Oscar nominee Viggo Mortensen), is likely to land a bunch of Oscar nominations, and maybe even a few wins.

But best original score will not be one of them.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that original music accounts for only about 25 minutes of the film. The rest of it takes cues from pre-existing songs.

Just seen that in advance of the Oscars, the 'SAG' awards (Screen Actors Guild) have voted Mahershala Ali, winner of outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role for Green Book.

Bloody hell - well done Green Book, Best Film at the Oscars, plus Mahershala Ali for supporting actor. Not popular with Spike Lee, but I'm interested to find out more about the soundtrack, still haven't seen the film - hope to do so soon.

I saw Green Book a couple of weeks ago at Stratford and really enjoyed it. I know there's some controversy about its accuracy but how many movies based on true stories are really factual?

The soundtrack was really good, I'd like to see a list of the tracks played as there were quite a few I didn't recognise.

It's the soundtrack that got my interest, good to hear it lives up to the promise.
