Alan Walls Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 (edited) Sweet 60’s Souldies A new theme for me, a list of out-and-out 60’s sweet soul charmers and gentle ballads. As a wee chap starting out on the Northern scene, I soon developed a particular love for the male vocal group sound, fast dancers and mid-tempo finger snappers alike, which eventually evolved to include the kind of sweeter tracks that were unplayable on the scene but which sounded irresistible at home. I’ve found such tracks on the flip sides of many in my Northern collection, and some are listed here, but with prominence given to the sweet side. As usual I’ve added YouTube clips so you can to treat your ears to something new, or to remind you how good a tune sounds, but they’re not my records: the one’s I’m selling are pictured. *** ALL ARE IN EX CONDITION UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE *** *** PLEASE READ THE TERMS AT THE BOTTOM IF YOU’RE BUYING SOMETHING *** *** SOLD *** 1 Otis Leavill - Let Her Love Me/ When The Music Grooves £20 a wonderful example of that, light-as-a-feather sweet Chicago sound, with a joyous uptempo classic on the flip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxXBJxh98Jc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-d8rYuWMl4 2 The Compliments - Borrow Til Morning / Beware Beware – Midas £70 early sounding group ballad on this iconic label. ‘Beware’ a fine, later-60’s sounding crossover dance gem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uf3ydIZHVbM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFLGrMn7-hc *** SOLD *** 3 Willie Parker – The Town I Live In / Don’t Hurt The One You Love - MPac £18 Willie does a fine job phrasing like Sam Cooke on the delicate ‘Town’, while ‘Don’t Hurt’ is a sturdy Northern stomper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDdVK-6eCzA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uY3RLnjolD8 4 The Shadows - No Other Love/ My Love Is Gone - USA £200 two sublime group soul sounds; ‘No Other Love’ a gentle ballad, with the majestic mid-tempo floater ‘My Love Is Gone’ making a superb double sider https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVDi5COLPvo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6JXzsUoMrE 5 The Sensations – Two Can Make It / It’s A New Day - Way Out £20 fabulously consistent group on this label https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r55fx2Gsdc4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R79rIH5AVgE *** SOLD *** 6 The Interpreters - Be Kind To Love – Abet demo £50 sweet southern soul out of Nashville https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3PpLDAcHW4 *** SOLD*** 7 The Occasions - Baby Don’t Go / There’s No You – Big Jim £20 another tale of two sides: delicate sweet soul on A, and lively uptempo on B https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvGx1axtYv0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUlGszr2VSo 8 Thee Midniters – Are You Angry – Chattahoochee £70 the original, almost unrecognisable version of The Servicemen’s much loved Northern classic. Chicano Soul legends Thee Midniters deliver a stripped-down, organ-sax-snare drum slowie that was later released on Whittier, but is a tuff find on Chattahoochee https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyEPzRHcIbo&list=RDWyEPzRHcIbo&start_radio=1 9 The Sensations – Please Baby Please/ Too Shy – Way Out *demo* £25 these guys again! Jerome Powell – Mother Said/It’s Alright – 3 WA £30 a wee oddity to finish with. Jerome was a member of The Ascots with his cousins Archie, Eddie and pal Irving Haywood, and these 1972 recordings are updated covers of the above-listed Ascots disc. Unfortunately, I can’t find any online clips of Jerome’s solo versions, so if you don’t know this (and it’s an obscure disc, so you probably don’t), the vocal is true to the original; with lighter, more contemporary backing. Ok, usual jive applies: • YouTube clips are not my records, I’ve included them to let you hear something new or remind you how good these are. My records are pictured. • PM your interest, but add a comment that the PM’s on the way • Orders under £50 add £3 for shipping by First Class Signed For; over £50 add £8 for Special Delivery. You can opt out of SD at your own risk, but you’ll only be compensated up to £50 if the records are lost or knackered in the post. Overseas customers – please ask for shipping rates • Payment by PayPal or Bank Transfer only. If PayPal, please pay as a gift, or add 5% to the total (inc P&P) if paying as a business transaction • All are at least in Ex condition unless stated otherwise • Honest Al’s money back guarantee on safe return, within 14 days of receipt, of a purchase where you disagree with my vinyl grading • Wanna haggle on price? They’re all well priced as it is, but go ahead - it does no harm to ask, but a firm ‘GTF’ may be the response… Right, that’s yer lot – let’s be ‘avin yer! Cheers Edited October 23, 2018 by Alan Walls update
