macca Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 (edited) Chic was from Brum originally, wasn't he? Edited February 20, 2008 by macca
Guest stivessoulie Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 I lived in St.Ives at the time and me and my friend Ali went to the three all dayers they had in late 1975, then the nighters......met many good friends and it is nice to still see some on the scene Paul-s, Karl Boddington, Macca, Cliff Steele etc happy days! Loved St.Ives and as Macca said for me it was Soul Sam.......sorry but I did like Billy Watkins :o) Also Walter Jackson at the end, Where have all the flowers gone :o) I used to walk home in the morning, gradually I went to Kettering and slowly my dad let me go further afield although he would have gone mad knowing me and Ali thumbed it to Wigan and all over the country, I told him we had a lift.....which we did but, never knew who with! Remember Chic from Bedford....Smoothie is still about, saw him at the 100 which was a suprise. Have quite a few photo's from that time and will get round to scanning them one of these days. Gill x
Guest whippet Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 I remember Shaun and Gary Dann what happened to them then?? Ive got load of photos of the two of them at St Ives
Mick Howard Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 I'm pleased to say that Kathy Rose (Rosie) is my beautiful girlfriend & we're still doing it downunder.....ironically we were very likely were in the same room at the same time either at St. Ives, Orton Goldhay, Fleet Centre or Wigan...the strange world of northern soul. KTF Baz Baz Take a look at my photo album, 7th frame and you will see your beautiful girlfriend Rosy and a small contingent from Norwich. I don't suppose Kathy will remember me 'cos I think I was younger than most (only by a year or so) but what memories. I joined the RAF very soon after that picture was taken. I'm with the person who remembers the smells of brut, juicy fruit etc. and I also remember in the morning knicking fresh milk from doorsteps if we found some (they must've still delivered on Sundays in those days). Mobbsy remembers me as I got a message from him recently and I'm very much still in touch with Kev Fev who I'll be seeing in a few weeks time along with Sean and Ivan (who remembers those two characters?). Ivan used to go out with Georgina (Archdeacon) back in the day before going off the rails a little (I hope he won't mind me saying that). Does anyone remember that guy who used to do 'roly-polys' (God love him) on the large dance floor as he couldn't quite get the hang of the proper acrobatic stuff. Who remembers Donald Duck who used to run the coaches from Birmingham? I travelled up with the Brummy lot on their coach one time to Wigan with a guy also called Mick from Chelmsley Wood (don't remember his surname as it was 30 years ago) and clearly remember the 50 year old coach driver 'stashing' all the gear under his engine hood - blimey I had never seen so many little coloured pills! Mick Howard
Mick Howard Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 Just remembered something else from St Ives; Danny and I used to always say 'Chubby Checker for Prime Minister' as You Just Don't Know was our fave tune at the time!!!
Guest mickeyb Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 We used to get the "Birmingham" coach to St Ives from Droitwich - I think it started somewhere in the Black Country (Gornal?). It then went to Birmingham and picked a load of people up at (I think) Five Ways - Skippy, Taffy, Benny, Sam etc etc. Val was always on it and Mick from Kiddy and sometimes Donald. I was at the Wheel night at St Ives and Hippo was getting right off on all the Chubby Checker stuff - Cum a la be stay and At the Discotheque. The oldies room seemed like a gym and it was pitch black with a green light over the decks - John Vincent was on and as I recall was brilliant. Don't think it was the night the police came in and switched the lights on (a lot of people looking somewhat bewildered). It might have been the gear but one of them looked like Geoff Capes. Happy days. Baz Take a look at my photo album, 7th frame and you will see your beautiful girlfriend Rosy and a small contingent from Norwich. Guest gordon russell Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 St Ives for me was one of the great allnighters it had great atmosphere and heard many a great choon played there, started going in about 75/6 we used to catch a bus from Northampton to Kettering then get the coach outside Kettering police station about 11ish I think the pubs used to shut about 10:30 in them days. Guest mickmac Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 The last I heard of Chic, he had "found the Lord" and was preaching/testifying on the streets. I believe he was from Walsall, but I might be wrong.
Guest Rich Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 hi all, just thinking to myself doesnt seem 5 mins ago since as a young lad in 1976 attending my first st.ives allnighter now 30yrs on cant wait to attend and dj at the first allnighter for over 15yrs very fond memories so what memories or stories do you good people have of the famous burgess hall st.ives? happy soulin russ ps, dont forget 28th december first st.ives allnighter for over 15yrs see events I remember it being a leather seated limo compared with me dads old Bedford van - which was Wigan. It did have a similar atmosphere to the Casino though - big, thumping hall probably had something to do with that. Although I was more awestruck when I first went to the Casino - maybe that was because it was my first all-nighter and I was younger. Memories - first time I went was May 76 - hitched from Huntingdon (train from Wolves), got no lift and walked the rest of the way. First sound I bought at St Ives - Unsatisfied on original Big Top. Still got it now!! Got a lift back to Brum on some coach - slept in the aisle because it was chocker. It was a real sad day when they stopped having all-nighters at such a great venue.

macca Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 now that is sad to hear. I last saw him at skegness 1980/1. I remember being in pub with tony warot & martyn, being brave lads, we'd slipped in their quietly to avoid the marauding 'we are the mods' lot, who were hell bent on a 'row' on the seafront. funny old game...

Coops Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 (edited) I DJ,d at most of the early St Ives Allnighters, cant remember exactly the dates, although i passed my driving test in Nov 75,so it was b4 that.Johnny Carrol was my only means of reliable transport in those days. One memory is the grand piano that was a fixture on the stage at the time.On my return approx 3 years ago,the stage appears to have shrunk and changing rooms have been built back stage. Some of the tunes i remember playing were, Lou Pride,Bunny Sigler,Falbala!!!!,Oscar Perry,Billy Woods,Marc Coppage,Porgy and Monarchs,Johnny Vanelli. Can anyone remember Ken Cox,s bouncer/doorman a gig coloured chap Malcolm? i remember Malcolm, bought a copy of Gil Scott-Heron's Winter in America LP off him in Red Lion's Square, Stamford back in 75. Only ever missed one St. Ives during the EASC period and although the recent re-unions and evolution are excellent nights the EASC 'nighters will never be surpassed IMHO. P.S. was that a real billy woods smudge? the vinyl that was floating about back then, if we but had one time machine what wonders would we drag into the present? Edited June 10, 2008 by coops 1
macca Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Good tunes there Smudge, except perhaps Marc Coppage :-) There's been several discussions about Billy Woods on here. With people like John Manship & Mr. Dewhurst all weighing in with their recollections. Top sound, then & now. Breath of fresh air at 6am, every time!
Guest Pablo Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Used to know a Chick Patten from Bedford way back in St. Ives days. Small chap, blond hair. Used to go to Ives from Kettering. North Park first (now sadly a block of flats!) to warm up. Caught the coach from opposite the Corn Market Hall, where I believe they now put on Northern nights. Was friends with ppl from all over. Norwich Brum, Sheffield. Went out - briefly!- with a girl from Doncaster, called Steph Brewer. Remember she had an old beetle. We kinda 'got together' in the pitch black oldies room! Also had a crush on Rosie from Norwich, now down in Oz I believe. Loved this all-nighter. Only ever really been a fan of oldies tho... Paul
Guest Pablo Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Me on the right, Phil from P'boro on the left and ....Monica, I think??...in the middle Paul
macca Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Superb photo Pablo. You rarely see that kind of quality from those kodak instamatic cameras that everybody used. The colours are really sharp & strong. Nice one. Phil O'Hearn is still on the scene. Macca.
