This was some of my experience growing up in the 70s too...Its all about soul..American or Jamaican and the British tribes that that took it all on..A way of life indeed..Soul is for life and not just for xmas.. yes.gif ..Click on the video and have a look..

Typical stereotype media comment though whenever Wigan is mentioned..........

The First words the guy narrating says about Wigan are..... "The drug fueled allnignters of the legendary Wigan Casino".......

Maybe we need to get Keb robbing chemists again  As for fights the only one i saw was the one in the coffee bar next door when one of the bouncers tried to chuck me out so i dropped him lol. Well said soulfulbob and scarborosoul !

The Casino WAS drug fuelled Mr Teapot, and loads of people were more into gear than the music. Not me of course, shameful behaviour, ahem.

So at it's peak when Wigan had around 100,000+ members, you are saying that more than half of these only ever joined, and came from all over the country just to pop a few Duramin, bombers, and green+clears??........ wacko.gif

'Drug Fueled' is just a sweeping media statement that implies everyone who went to Wigan was smashed out of there skulls every night, and when you handed you £1 to Ma Woods to get in, she handed you a few chalkies wraped up in your ticket stub!.

Perhaps I went to a different Station Rd in Wigan for some 3+ years, but this is not how I remember it, YES it had it fair share of illegal chemicals to help people avoid a peaceful night's sleep, name me ONE youth culture scene that did not??, but whenever the words Wigan Casino are mentioned in the media, the first sentance after is allways some referance to drugs....... not the Music!, not the scene!, not the people!. allways Drugs....

I think you will find that MOST people went to the Casino for the Music!........... or they did at the Station Rd I went to anyway!.

Teapot, I see the point youre trying to make.

Oh well, that is how I remember it. Perhaps I had a different experience to you, I only caught the final 18 months so maybe it was more drug fuelled by then, I don't know, the people who introduced me to the scene were shooting up speed by then, I was only 17 and they seemed to be ancient but looking back in retropect I doubt if many of them were more than 25 !!!

I still estimate 90% were smashed, and 100% of the people I went with definately were, and thats what I base my judgement on.

And of course I totally agree with you that most people did go for the music, the friendships, atmosphere etc, but I still know that for many getting 'off your head' was the first priority for some.

Very selective memories(must be the tablets or lack of them)

Steve(clean)

Steve.

I think you are somewhat missing my point!.....

If you said the phrase 'Drug fueled' to the average 'non-believer' it would conjour up an image of Wigan being full of people just sitting around, with belts round their arms, passing around syringe's full of smack, having paid for this by just mugging a local Granny coming out of the Bingo hall..........a 'Stereotype', and clearly not the case!.

What pisses me off is why is it just Wigan that the media always refer to as 'Drug fueled?........ The mods had just as many 'Pill heads', but is never refered to as the 'Drug fueled Mod scene', I have never seen a headline saying the 'Ganga fueled Hippy scene', or the 'Mushroom fueled Heavy Rock scene'..

Or is it perhaps that Northern soul people were the only 'Kids' ever to take drugs??..

Garry.

(Also clean..... I've just had a Shower  )

You know, i finished work on Fridays got ready and went down to the Brit, (Nott,m)where after much scrounging managed to get a lift to Wigan, sometimes did it by train others by hitchhiking. Sat went to Nottingham, to selectadisc and Image (clothes shop) then the Forest for the game. Straight after went of to Wigan and spent the night, dancing, occasionally pill popping, and having a great time.

thought I was doing it because I enjoyed it but has with all this media crap says I was doing it because I was socially deprived and trying to escape the tedium of life.

Does it ever accur to these sad people that we did it because we wanted to and if we wanted to escape we could have gone to Australia with all the others.
