Popular Post Paul R
I used to travel a lot for work, and ended up for a couple of days in Zantè fixing a yacht. I had my dinner in a restaurant, and on the way back to the hotel saw a flyer in a bar window saying "Tuesday night is soul night with Darren". As it was Tuesday I went in. Darren was just setting up his equipment. It looked like it was going to be CDs, but that was ok. The music being played from behind the bar was a mixture of chart stuff and a bit of northern. So far so good I thought. Anyway, as 8 o'clock approached Darren got ready. The first track started, ok it was Stand By Me, I thought I'm only here for a couple of hours due to an early flight next day. As the intro to Stand by Me got to the point when Ben E King was about to start, Darren lifted the mic to his mouth and in true pub singer style screamed "whin De Nite as come"!. Feck me, I've never finished a pint and run away so fast! 13 Link to comment Social source share

Soul-slider
Paul r, you just reminded me of something similar... Whilst in Tenerife 2 weeks back there was a bar advertising a 'Soul Singer' on tonight 'Classic Soul' was the sub headline. Me the missus and kids went in there and a black guy around 40 years old came on stage. Good voice, not bad and singing the usual tunes. Then he asked for requests and I was going to say Jackie Wilson 'Sweetest Feeling' but I thought no, that's too easy. "How about something by Chuck Jackson"? I asked, "who?" was his reply so I said "well if you don't know who he is then you're not a real Soul man".... It was all taken in jest really but surely if you're really into Soul then you'd know who Chuck Jackson is... wouldn't you? Guest BabyBoyAndMyLass
On about bad soul do's, the ones I go to it's not so much the music policy or the door policy, or the style of dress. It's more the conversation that goes along with being in the age group that I have only just entered into, me being BabyBoy and all... Recently a soul acquaintance was telling me about a recent visit to the quacks. The quack apparently asked him could he ask him a personal question. To which my mate says 'Of course Doctor' the Doctor enquired 'Do you masturbate?' my mate hesitated a minute and replied 'Er well yes I do occasionally' To which the Doc winked at him and replied 'Eh it's smashing int eet!' Anyway he went on to tell me he'd recently had a Prostate examination and, while lying on his side while the specialist was having a root around, the specialist says 'Don't worry sir it is quite usual to get an erection during this proceedure' Well matey says 'I don't have an erection' and the specialist says 'No sir I was talking about myself'... How times and conversations at events have changed! Link to comment Social source share

A few years ago I went to a soul night at an absolutely brilliant venue. Despite the fact that some well respected local DJs were on the bill, the guy running it (which I later discovered) was your typical wedding DJ trying to jump on the bandwagon. He opened up with his Now That's What I Call Northern mix straight off his laptop, proceeded to prance around behind the decks, having it large and just being a dickhead in general. Meanwhile, the dance floor filled up with stiletto clad females dancing around handbags, drinks in hand, while some local photographer, complete with shoulder held video camera, wandered around the floor recording the whole thing for posterity. I had been in the mood for a good night out, and the local pub I had been in earlier served decent beer and actually played better music than what I was about to be subjected to. I lasted an hour in the venue, and by all accounts, it didn't get any better, the other DJs having to play to the lowest common denominator. I'm hoping that posting this on here will help in my recovery process. As a sometime dj this is my greatest hate, i always turn up at the start of the night/ Dayer (never done an all-niter), but always like to know who else is dj-ing either earlier and later to give me an idea of what they will play. And never leave until the end or time for my last bus home (if i get paid it could be a taxi). Link to comment Social source share
Frankie Crocker
There have been a few at the fabled 100 Club down the years. Going back to the 90’s, Ady put on a Modern Soul Allniter. Hardly anyone turned up and virtually none of the regulars showed up apart from myself. I left after a couple of hours as the music was so dull and uninspiring. Ady said he felt he had to put the event on as the followers had no other events to go to. Needless to say, the promotion was not repeated. Some of the 100 Club Christmas Parties were far from soulful. Dancefloor covered with beer. Toilet floor flooded. Venue packed with handbaggers, tourists and groups out on a bender. Very little rare soul played. Sound system struggling above the racket. Lots of well known Motown and commercial soul with a liberal helping of poppy Northern, some leaning towards the festive season. Largely a great piss-up for those off work the next day. I visited myself on 3. Occasions to the fabled 100 club and was very disappointed 3 times it was hit and miss, more miss and the punters a good percentage of them were far from being hard core SOULIES , one night I visited there was a little gang shooting water pistols at one another in the cloakroom, these individuals visited some of the promotions up North and frankly were at the bottom of the pile but they wouldn't dare of behaved like that up here, I was surprised at the time with the lack of atmosphere it felt totally mis mash and definitely didn't get you there this was early 1990's it might just of bad luck on my part I chose those nights but I don't think so, Emperors New Clothes comes to mind ML 2 Link to comment Social source share

As a veteran of over 100 Allniters there, I would have to say the do’s generally bordered on splendiferous and unsurpassable. Cloakroom pranks probably down to Tef or Brummie Mick, perhaps on a quiet night. Attendances recently have dipped with fewer diehards travelling from up North, but full marks for anyone who went the extra 200 miles month after month, decade after decade. Sure, there’s always been a few bewildered new faces it being the capital city and Time Out steering some unsuspecting tourists down the stairs. The Anniversary Allniters bear comparison with the best do’s ever held on planet earth, but some Saturdays struggle as the once-a-year merchants can’t be bothered to support a regular event. 3 Link to comment Social source share

As you saw, it isn't your 'huge hall' nighter that lots do prefer, more a 'club' feel that doesn't suit some people. And as has been said, being the capital, it does attract some you don't want there, but Ady does try to keep a tab on this. I'm in the love it side, but also love the 'huge hall' nighters of course. (The Christmas p*ss up is exactly what it says on the tin) All the best, Len 5 Link to comment Social source share

Bar was always six deep and the second bar was only opened once if I recall. Roger and Mick when DJing always struggled to put on a record more common than the previous one. It was always a relief to get back to street level and be barged by fewer drunks. 2 Link to comment Social source share
Timillustrator
Does anyone want to hear my theory about the 5 levels of soul event? Just a bit of fun really. 1 Link to comment Social source share
Popular Post Timillustrator
Level 0 – Event in a local pub, sometimes billed as ‘Northern Soul’, usually amongst other things such as ‘Soul’, ‘Motown’, ‘Ska’, ‘Mod’, ‘Indie’, ‘Britpop’ (and in extreme cases ‘Reggae’ and ‘Disco’) but just occasionally the poster (only ever online) might make it look like it’s an actual NS event. Doesn’t have a Facebook page but might be posted somewhere on another group on Facebook by the DJ, not on Soul Source. Usually one DJ, usually does Reggae night and weddings probably using a laptop. Crowd is whoever happens to be in the pub although it might attract the odd person who thinks it’s a proper do. Chance of hearing ‘Do I Love You’ 90% (would be 100% but the DJ, being new to Northern Soul, may not know the song). Level 1 – Event in a local community centre or Labour/Conservative/British Legion/social/working men’s club. Takes place monthly and usually billed as ‘Northern Soul and Motown’ or ‘Motown and Northern Soul’ on posters (online), commonly has a Facebook page, probably not on Soul Source. More than one DJ; some can be very good and it’s their ‘local’ monthly do, usually the same DJ’s every month though. Mostly vinyl although a laptop may be present. Crowd is regulars and nearly all local, some will be wearing NS branded stuff; age is mostly 50+. Chance of hearing ‘Do I Love You’ 100%. Level 2 – Event in a community centre, Labour/Conservative/British Legion/social/working men’s club or town/civic/church/village hall. May be monthly or quarterly, billed as ‘Northern Soul’ although occasionally may have ‘Rare Motown’ or ‘Up-tempo R&B’ etc. added, has posters (online and physical) and flyers, usually has a Facebook page and on Soul Source. Resident and visiting DJ’s, some of the visitors may be national names. Original vinyl only. Crowd is regulars and some who will travel. Much more of a mixed age group although predominantly 18-30 or 45+. Chance of hearing ‘Do I Love You’ 5% (although it may be the Casino Soul Orchestra instrumental version and the DJ may be playing it “ironically”). Level 3 – Event in a Town, Civic or City Hall or purpose built club. 2 or 3 times a year, well publicised, often by a big name promoter, will be all over Facebook and on Soul Source. DJ’s, will be national names with a couple of local well known people. Original vinyl only. Crowd is national. Mixed age group 18-70’s. Chance of hearing ‘Do I Love You’ 0%. Level 4 – Not sure if this level actually exists, although some people would like to think it does. Probably only takes place once or twice a year and in a secret or very out of the way location, advertised mysteriously online although will be on Soul Source. Probably 3 or 4 DJ’s, some may be national names. OVO, rare stuff, very rare stuff and extremely rare stuff. Crowd travel from across the country, age group all. Chance of hearing ‘Do I Love You’ 100% (but only on an unreleased covered up acetate rumoured to be Chuck Jackson that no one ever knew existed). 7 Link to comment Social source share
