Guest
Where do I start? they were never in the studio together and maybe I'm at fault but I hate Ross' insipid voice. Not listened to this for years because I hate it with a veritable passion. Marvin was going through the paces at this point in his career with his best stuff behind him IMO. Timillustrator
Local pub, advertised as "Northern Soul and Motown night" on Facebook with a poster almost certainly copied from somewhere else, free in, never heard of the (sole) DJ. It was within walking distance and I wasn't expecting much but thought it was worth checking out. The pub actually has a decent function room upstairs with a wood dancefloor and people were posting to ask if it was up there, but no it was a DJ in the corner of the (carpeted floor) bar playing basically Motown Chartbusters and, rather inexplicably, the Nolans from a laptop while 4 drunk people jumped up and down a bit. The beer was OK though! Edited July 29, 2018 by Timillustrator 2 Link to comment Social source share

Dj's just think 'Oh, it's a Wigan Casino nite so I'll just play the usual and everyone's happy'. Then the next DJ just's take the lazy option and does exactly the same. I don't bother with them anymore as most are just Parody theme nights, Stick a Nite Owl on your Flyer, play FW and Presto, it's 1977 all over again. Popular Post Steve S 60
I travel a lot to events, so it pains me if I have to leave a venue early, normally because of the music policy. A few years ago I went to a soul night at an absolutely brilliant venue. Despite the fact that some well respected local DJs were on the bill, the guy running it (which I later discovered) was your typical wedding DJ trying to jump on the bandwagon. He opened up with his Now That's What I Call Northern mix straight off his laptop, proceeded to prance around behind the decks, having it large and just being a dickhead in general. Meanwhile, the dance floor filled up with stiletto clad females dancing around handbags, drinks in hand, while some local photographer, complete with shoulder held video camera, wandered around the floor recording the whole thing for posterity. I had been in the mood for a good night out, and the local pub I had been in earlier served decent beer and actually played better music than what I was about to be subjected to. I lasted an hour in the venue, and by all accounts, it didn't get any better, the other DJs having to play to the lowest common denominator. I'm hoping that posting this on here will help in my recovery process. 9 Link to comment Social source share

I think that was the same with my one above, part of the problem is that anyone with a copy of photoshop can now knock up a professional looking poster/flyer (well actually nick one and change the dates and venue) in about 5 minutes so if that's all you see it looks like it may be decent enough. Ironically some of the best local nights don't even have a poster - don't need to I suppose because everyone knows about it. They can also, if they even want to bother going that far, pinch a playlist off Facebook and download all the tracks beforehand so it all seems dead easy. Putting a do on is a lot easier than it used to be, for lots of reasons - 24 hour licences (so can put on all night if so wish) / Lots of venues are desperate for the extra business - Christ, I used to have to go to committee meetings at working men's clubs to be interviewed, and having to talk them in to allowing me to hire their venue!......"The thing is.......(Dramatic pause).......I don't really like nowadays music, I much prefer 60's music"......"Yeh, now you're talking Sonny".......I was in! As said, flyers easy now / internet promoting of course etc etc, so loads of events is bound to lead to some not being a professionally run quality event. Steve S 60
Then there's the soul night that died a death not because of the quality of the venue, or the music policy, both being excellent, but the door policy. Spurred on by what I can only assume was the greed of the promoter, not closing the doors at a decent time and allowing all the local p*ssheads to pile in when the boozers kicked out. Cue full on punch up, music off, lights on and local plod in attendance. Lasted about two more months after that as attendances plummeted. Of course if they played stuff rare enough to not be on Shazam (not all that hard), it wouldn't show up but it could lead to more competition to play non-Shazam records? Bbrich
only one bad do 'experience' that springs to mind (not counting a couple of local pub dos where you know what to expect). Been to this do before once & enjoyed it but as it was about 140 miles away I phoned to make sure it was on, told yes it will be a 'cracker'etc.... Got there to find about 3 people + the organisers, who explained it was quiet because nearly everyone had gone to a particular weekender and they weren't sure whether to put it on or not! could have told me before!!
