Of course it's a bonus if a track has some soul to justify the classification, but so many Northern tracks are all all about power, danceability, and exclusivity, that sometimes the soul is on a back burner..

As for naming those other few obscurities that folk want to hear , is this not another of those 'fishing' threads aimed at getting a setlist gifted to you ...

Not being a DJ, I was not looking for a play list.. Just a contribution to NORTHERN but not necessarily SOUL..

The so called Top 500 is badly in need of a review. There are loads of recent biggies not in the Kev Roberts books. If I had to suggest a tune it would be the Joseph Webster/Angela Davis number, My Love Is So Strong. There are of course plenty of other artists that have produced great records such as the Oxford Knights, Parisians, Constellations, Ward Burton, Talmadge Armstrong etc that could feature in a ‘best of the best list’ without being plagiarised by some struggling DJ.

Most peoples tastes evolve over time, so sometimes what they enjoyed 30 -50 years isn’t what they still enjoy now and yes I know some are returning to the scene after a long break & want to hear what some on here call the same old tracks. Do we really need to pigeon hole another 500 tracks that will be disputed & vilified in 5 or 10 years time? There are 1000’s of tracks I enjoy but they wouldn’t suite everyone so I suppose I have my own top 500  that is constantly changing going backwards & forwards as sometimes a track I haven’t heard for sometime gets ushered back to the top of the list. That’s why I for one don’t like regular playlists but hey were not all the same if we were life would be so “yawn” boring.

Agreed Kirsty. The book needs re-writing and the playlists need a makeover. The scene has moved on considerably and a few more ‘crown jewels’ have been revealed. I suppose these gems would be the highlights of the best collections, but realistically, few collectors will ever get close to owning them all. Sure, there’s a case for putting forward the hallowed classics, Right Track, Surprise Party, Out On The Floor etc. That said, some of the top tunes exist in small numbers and are only played out infrequently but qualify due to high soul quotient regardless of rarity eg Connie Austin, Camaros, Karmello Brooks, Margaret Little, Gerri Hall etc.

I would struggle to list 1,000 ‘Crown Jewels’ as like yourself, there are many thousands of tracks I like, but it seems there is a real correlation with extreme rarity hence Mello Souls would top plenty of lists along with Ray Agee, Caressors, Sweets, Prophets, Walter and Admirations, Tranells etc

There are some really good unexposed tracks out there also that deserve ‘gem’ status and at the risk of doing some DJ’s unearthing, I put forward Louis Jordan on Pzazz, Ricky Gee on Conduc, Herb Ryals on Jubilee, Bands Of Gold on Smash. There are hundreds like these awaiting their time in the limelight and often widely available for a small sum.

Well you can try put this in a playlist but may struggle. The absolute Lion's do-da's. Lyrically stunning outa sight production and sublime vocal production. Easy this game innit.

Does anyone want to estimate a ball-park figure for how many records are currently 'in use' on the scene? 500/600 is a hell of a lot of records but by now the figure of popular records that are current spins must be enormous?

                               I used to go through playlists years ago & I got to 6,500 then, the last time I added to the list was 2004 because playlists got more common & hundreds started appearing (Mind Boggling) . Chalky is probably your man for that kind of trivia & I would suspect he would have a good guesstimate.

        In answer to your question about number of records played ,the esteemed promoter and DJ,Kev Roberts said on Dean Andersons T:N:T. radio show{ March 2018},, that things had not changed since his glory days at The Casino and true dancefloor fillers amounted to 50 /60 records !

Some great tunes, thanks.

As a 14 year old, and going to the nappy nights at baileys, this got played and changed everything. Bigger boys...and girls who must have been to all nighters crowded the dancefloor and strutted their stuff. I had to join that crowd..and did.

If Your Gonna force my arm one for us England fans was an Arthur Willis track but to be fair Unsung Wonders did a good job with there version in 2017 & then for 2018 the Enkays original unreleased, a cracker of a tune Enjoy Kirsty
