Pete S Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 (edited) A friend recommended selling on Gemm as an alternative to ebay so I had a go at setting up an account today but there are a couple of things I don't understand so I wondered if anyone could help? Firstly, you have to do a listing in plain text, right. If you want to add to hat list say a week later, do you have to add the next text on the bottom of the original list and send that up as one big new list? Secondly, if you have say 50 ska records and 50 soul records to sell, how do you categorise them so they stay separate? Where do you do this? I have uploaded a test page of about 30 records, but it hasn't shown up yet - how long does it take? Finally, I made a list of postage charges but only part of it is showing up. How do I log on to the part of the site where I can make changes to my set up? I think that was all I needed to know so far, if anyone can think of anything else useful I should know it really would be appreciated. thanks, Pete Edited December 6, 2006 by Pete-S
Richard Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 (edited) Pete You can add single items as well as send a new list for them to upload. You need to go to the Seller/Affiliate section as mentioned below To change any settings go to MY ACCOUNT, click on Seller/Affiliate: on the top left hand side, then scoll down and go to Change Preferences / Registration It does take a while for an uploaded list to show so don't panic yet Not sure about how to categorise them on an uploaded list, sorry Edited December 6, 2006 by richard
Sutty Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 (edited) Hi Pete I use Gemm and use lists. Make an Excel spreadsheet of your entries and in the first line do the headers, theres a list of headings on Gemm you can use, I use something like MY CATALOGUE NUMBER, ARTIST, TITLE, LABEL, DESCRIPTION, PRICE IN £, FORMAT, CONDITION, CATEGORY. in excel columns something like this for each entry: 00001 | James Brown | Sex Machine | Polydor | Funk record Pete doesn't like | £3 | 7" | EX | FUNK,SOUL,NEW ADDITIONS Under Category, you can list up to 3 categories with commas inbetween, so you could do NORTHERN SOUL, SKA, NEW ADDITIONS for example, and those categories would show up at the bottom of your Gemm Catalogue page. You make these up yourself with as many different ones as you like to a max of 3 per record. Once you've completed your excel spreadsheet, save it as Excel then save it as .csv or .txt Do not change the column headings or whether you use .csv or .txt from now on, this is the template you must use for every update. In the Seller page there is an option to upload and replace your entire catalogue. browse for your Text file (not the Excel file) and upload it. In the first instance it may take a day or two, as the Gemm people check the format is right and set up your template. From then on, use the same process, but REMOVE the first line with the column headings in, as after the very first upload Gemm have set your template up so the Gemm Server knows what each column means. Just replace your catalogue each time. Only bind is you have to manually delete entries from your spreadsheet each time or you'll put up records you've sold. Also it is important that if you are using your own catalogue numbers in the first column that each one is unique, if you use the same catalogue number for 2 records the second will not show up. If you have more than one copy give them seperate personal catalogue numbers. The Gemm system removes all sales from the site as they go along. Drop me a mail if you need any more help I found it confusing at first, but once you get your head round it it works well, cheers Paul soulcitizen@yahoo.co.uk Edited December 6, 2006 by Sutty

Get all your stock into some form of data base, excel will do to start. Set it up in a formate that matches the Gemm formate. This makes the whole uploading and updating easy. Takes a while but it is worth it. Also when you do that, making up your own mailing list becomes some much more simple. Dvae
Pete S Posted December 7, 2006 Author Posted December 7, 2006 Thanks very much guys for taking the time to explain all that. One more question, is it essential that you have to have a column with your stock catalogue number?
Dave Thorley Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 Thanks very much guys for taking the time to explain all that. One more question, is it essential that you have to have a column with your stock catalogue number? No, but if you run a data base program that gives you automatic number allocation, you will find down the road that it's so helpful. Hows it all going Pete, bit of a slog to start with but saves so much time long term and you will see good sales from Gemm. But do make sure you stay on top of responding to customer orders, slow response and they suspend your account. I've just spent 4 hours on my data base. Now i'm getting ready for a bit of fun at the Nurnberg Weekender Have fun Dave

Now i'm getting ready for a bit of fun at the Nurnberg Weekender Have fun Dave They won't have any trouble with that Dave, I always send orders same day or next day at the latest, sometimes I send them before I've even sold them. The stuff I uploaded isn't showing up yet, should be soon though. And once again, thanks for everyones advice with this.
Guest Lady Maverick Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 I haven't sold, but I have bought PLENTY! LOL
Pete S Posted December 7, 2006 Author Posted December 7, 2006 Still not showing and it's been 4 hours now since I sent it up. Is this normal for the first upload??
