Mike Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 this time around we have a 'battle' suggested by @jimmy clitheroe it's another battle royale... Edwin Starr - I Have Faith in You v Doni Burdick - I Have Faith in You voice your choice! then once posted your choice... feel most free to share your reasons, view, stories, memories etc etc 1
Popular Post Steve S 60 Posted June 21, 2018 Popular Post Posted June 21, 2018 Edwin any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Much more convincing vocal performance. 5 1
Mick Holdsworth Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 For me it's Doni's version, only just. There's just something about it, maybe more to do with the different backing singers rather than DB himself.
Soul16 Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 For me, Edwin's version has a more heartfelt vocal performance, so it got my vote. Doni's version sounds like he's reading the lyrics off a sheet. However, the backing track does have a certain something about it. 1
Hooker1951 Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 Being cowardly again here sitting on the fence again both magic sounds what work in a slightly different way, Edwin,s vocals plead with you , Donni,s vocals in a sublime way work and get to you too I'm giving these two 50% each both fantastic sounds ML
Guest Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 (edited) As with most of these comparisons, the actual technical elements of the recordings are of secondary importance to most people. The overriding reason for someone choosing their favourite is really down to when they heard them for the first time, and the memories said hearings evoke. Therefore, and for me, Edwin wins hands down. Every.....single.....day.....of......the.......week. The original version, still after all this time the better of the two, and the one that reminds me of so, so much that happened back in the early 70's. Edited June 21, 2018 by Guest
manus Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 Edwin without a doubt for me too . I'd say it was one of the most Soulful records ever spun on the scene here. Always sent a shiver down the spine sung with feeling and absolute conviction. 3
Carty Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 Yes ,it has to be Edwin for me , (were there any Ric Tic white demos of it ?). Doni Burdick s is also great .The rumbling intro heavy orchestration and backing singers combine with the vocal to put this in my all time top 5 . 1

Ric-Tic WDJ's are super cute but I dropped the case (to have them all WDJ's) the day I found out that his very favorite one of mine 'I have faith in you' was available only on the red stock copies where all the WDJ's where double 'A' side !!! 1

Soulfinger Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 Edwin by a huge distance. A magnificent vocal performance which is right up there with his very best and his best is awesome.
The Yank Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 (edited) Nothing to think about here- 100% Edwin for me ! Doni comes across as some bad lounge singer in Las Vegas. Edited June 21, 2018 by the yank 1

Peter99 Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 Edwin is King. Far too underrated as one of the best vocalists ever. Peter 1 1

Edwin S Wales Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 (edited) Doni’s Version is ok, but Edwin’s version is Magnificent...still get goose pimples from his version after all these years ...and maybe even a tear to my eye if I’ve had a few glasses Edited June 21, 2018 by Edwin S Wales 1
luxury soul Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 Edwin by a country mile, my all time favourite. Met him on numerous occasions and DJ’d at some of his live performances, lovely man and what a voice! No contest! 1

Missing Link Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 (edited) No contest - got to be Edwin Starr. He sings it as though he actually means it whereas Doni Burdick just plods through the song. Edited June 21, 2018 by Missing Link Additional thought. 1
Patto Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 Well i wish i owned a copy of Doni just for the flip side Bari Track. However Edwins version is far Better always brings up the neck hairs whenever i hear it 1

Yes I understand that - Gordy could see a pot of cash better than most. My point was that if you talk about the best vocalists over the year I do not see Edwin's name come up very often. Jules Holland said that Edwin was the best live vocalist he'd ever worked with - and he knows a bit about music.

I remember having a lengthy talk with Edwin in 2000 when he and Bill Randle brought JJ Barnes and Steve Mancha over to Birmingham. Not only was he a great singer,he was also Gentleman.
Ian Stacey Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 Edwin by a long shot the mans a legend on the scene
Harrythedog Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 I know I shouldn't like it, and Edwins vocals are a mile better, but for production, arrangement and the total package Burdicks version comes out on top

Yes, he was a really nice man. Lived not far from me until he passed away. I've said this many times on here before but........................ Edwin is buried in the same cemetery as my mum - Wilford Hill in Nottingham. Its a very peaceful place, up on a hill, and I often imagine Edwin singing to my mum - his voice gently resonating with the wind rustling through the trees. God bless both my Mum and Edwin. John Hart Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 The fantastico Charlie Hatcher by a Million %!! D,Burdock like his Fizzy namesake is pure Pop !! Doni just exemplifies all that is bad in the obsession with the rarer version , the ChipTyler over Jerry Williams ,the Formulaya over O, jays ,"Act" and Lenny Blackburn over Doris ,s "Anything". No Contest.! LOL Johnny ,Espanol. 1
Tomangoes Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 Even many years after the ric tic side was cut, and even with a poor studio backing, the guys voice and passion stand out. RIP Edwin Ed 1
Hooker1951 Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 I asked Edwin to sing it live at Maxims circa 1988 he did at 4am in the morning and brought the house down a fantastic live artist and a genuine nice guy whose music will stand the test of time for ever and a day ML 1
Davenpete Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 The instrumental version Guy used to play is best by miles. Dx

Dx I don't remember Guy playing it at Stafford, but there are plenty of copies of a Soussan origin backing track + strings about. My old copy came from the owner of Selectadisc's garage, when Stigger was clearing it out for him (Stig's wife at the time worked for Brian). Credited to the Detroit symphony if I recall. Backing track plus tweaks of Sidney Barnes "I hurt on the other side" on the other side. I'm sure it was from Soussan, because there were quite a few Black Magic related acetates there too. Including a 10" "Love you baby" that was credited to Lorraine Chandler, and the discs were all identical. Edited June 22, 2018 by Rich B
Hooker1951 Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 I still play the instrumental version out and it always gets a good response it's a fantastic piece of music stands up with the vocal versions ML 1

Popular Post Tricky Posted June 22, 2018 Popular Post Posted June 22, 2018 This is just an insult to Edwin. Doni Burdick cant sing! If it wasnt for the quirky foible for liking crap white artists who happened to have brilliant Detroit backing tracks behind them they wouldnt get half the attention. 4
Carty Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 The Detroit symphony Instumental version was massive at Wigan in 1975 , think it was emidisc copies only at that point , i have a white label copy with a stamp saying ( ithink ) re spin records and the title , with Barbara Mcneir on the other side , from maybe ten years back. Would imagine these are around still for around £15.00 - £ 20.00 ish .
