Timillustrator Posted June 9, 2018 Posted June 9, 2018 There are a few well known Jamaican artists who did some Soul at some point in their lives. Jimmy Cliff and Jackie Edwards being the most well known probably. Any other suggestions, I know a lot of it crosses over into more Ska or Reggae territory?. This is fairly well known but there must be some more obscure stuff out there. 1
Popular Post Soulsides Posted June 9, 2018 Popular Post Posted June 9, 2018 Glen Miller 'Where Is The Love' is a nice one. 5
Roburt Posted June 9, 2018 Posted June 9, 2018 (edited) Jackie Opel was from Barbados, but he did his recording in Jamaica ... some of which was great soul. Edited June 9, 2018 by Roburt 2
Popular Post Tomangoes Posted June 9, 2018 Popular Post Posted June 9, 2018 The real deal. I love it and hate it, and just wish I had a copy Ed 6
Popular Post Soul-slider Posted June 9, 2018 Popular Post Posted June 9, 2018 (edited) Long before Trojan did their 'Work Your Soul' CD I was doing my own Jamaican Soul compilations. This one was my first and I used to dish them out when I ran a Ska/Reggae fanzine, many people had copies and it was very popular, you can see by the track listing it was fairly similar to the one Trojan put out.... I've since done 12 volumes of the stuff so there's plenty out there!! Edited June 9, 2018 by Soul-Slider 7 1
Kev John Posted June 10, 2018 Posted June 10, 2018 (edited) This is quite an obscure 1 a great version of the Temptations gets the floor going when played out ! Edited June 10, 2018 by Kev John 2

Modularman Posted June 10, 2018 Posted June 10, 2018 Errol Dixon did quite a few 'soulful' recordings and this Glen Miller deep soul cut is bizarrely on the flip of a Dennis Alcapone Dee Jay record 2
Dimples Posted June 10, 2018 Posted June 10, 2018 Great amazing uptempo from the duo king of Jamaican Soul 1
Dimples Posted June 10, 2018 Posted June 10, 2018 Rarest Jimmy James and the Vagabonds 45. Soul take on a Prince Buster Ska tune. Superb and oh so rare:

I have an old mag article on him from around 63 (it's on my other computer, so can't post it up here till I get home). He was from Trinidad / Tobago & did nearly all of his recording in the UK & Europe. Edited June 10, 2018 by Roburt 1

Sorry. 1
Cunnie Posted June 10, 2018 Posted June 10, 2018 Yes you read it right. Bob Marley & the Wailers with one of the most Soulful records ever made IMO 1

No problem at all ... he was basically a reggae artist who made soul tracks ... lots of the best reggae soul (IMO) was actually made in the UK but owed much to Jamaica. 2
Roburt Posted June 10, 2018 Posted June 10, 2018 A bit off topic BUT I think it fits in with the thread ... Miami back in 64 ... at the start of the period when many islanders were becoming Jamericans ... I'm sure lots of reggae singers became quite influenced by soul during those years ... 2
Davenpete Posted June 10, 2018 Posted June 10, 2018 (edited) Never got on with straight reggae (though some of the west indian soul stuff I've heard is blinding) but this well known old club sound is right up my street... Edited June 10, 2018 by DaveNPete 3

Wow, when I heard that starting riff I thought it was Gloria, you know G-L-O-R-I-A. It certainly owes something to it?
Soul-slider Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 Here's the next 5 CD's I did. This isn't a sales pitch just showing off some of my collection as all these tracks are recorded off 45's or LP's that I own. I appreciate some may not be 100% Jamaican Soul (as opposed to UK Soul with British singers of Jamaican descent). 1
