There are a few well known Jamaican artists who did some Soul at some point in their lives. Jimmy Cliff and Jackie Edwards being the most well known probably. Any other suggestions, I know a lot of it crosses over into more Ska or Reggae territory?. This is fairly well known but there must be some more obscure stuff out there.

Jackie Opel was from Barbados, but he did his recording in Jamaica ... some of which was great soul.

Long before Trojan did their 'Work Your Soul' CD I was doing my own Jamaican Soul compilations. This one was my first and I used to dish them out when I ran a Ska/Reggae fanzine, many people had copies and it was very popular, you can see by the track listing it was fairly similar to the one Trojan put out....

I've since done 12 volumes of the stuff so there's plenty out there!!

Fantastic track listing. Would love to see what the other cd's have as I'm a big fan of Jamaican Soul!

A few I like:

Mel Turner made quite a few goodies from 1962 onwards ... I have an old mag article on him from around 63 (it's on my other computer, so can't post it up here till I get home). He was from Trinidad / Tobago & did nearly all of his recording in the UK & Europe.

My fault totally. I guess the fact of recording for a bluebeat label like Carnival made me think he was jamaican. Sorry.

No problem at all ... he was basically a reggae artist who made soul tracks ... lots of the best reggae soul (IMO) was actually made in the UK but owed much to Jamaica.

A bit off topic BUT I think it fits in with the thread ... Miami back in 64 ... at the start of the period when many islanders were becoming Jamericans ...

I'm sure lots of reggae singers became quite influenced by soul during those years ...

Never got on with straight reggae (though some of the west indian soul stuff I've heard is blinding) but this well known old club sound is right up my street...

Wow, when I heard that starting riff I thought it was Gloria, you know G-L-O-R-I-A. It certainly owes something to it?

Here's the next 5 CD's I did. This isn't a sales pitch just showing off some of my collection as all these tracks are recorded off 45's or LP's that I own. I appreciate some may not be 100% Jamaican Soul (as opposed to UK Soul with British singers of Jamaican descent).

There is some interesting funk from Jamaica too. Dunno if that is off topic or of interest? Don't know how to post youtube links either way.

Just paste the link in your post and it'll appear if you allow a few secs.

Derrick Harriott has already been mentioned & I posted Trial of Love in the Lowrider thread some time ago but it fits nicely into this thread too.

I think these guys were from the West Indies. Their output is superb:

Yes quite right. I have used some of their tracks for my JA Soul selections, including on my latest compilation...

How cool and underrated is the Rudy Seedorf 45 on Island. Two really fab overlooked sides!
