Terry also has a passion for 'Sofa Soul' gems; an integral part of the Norfolk Village years & wow ... lots of them today! I am sure many of the younger listeners would have dismissed today's show... but hearing Terry playing far superior sixties/seventies deep rooted soul beat ballads, I could listen and appreciatate Terry in this state of mind........... till my arse turns dry. Steve Plumb Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Just one thing (for now) - "Alma Faye - Thank You" Why is this so familiar to me? - I don't think I know it by her, but I'm almost sure I've heard it before (or something else very similar) Or has someone else recorded it maybe...? It's buggin' me now! John - sorry cannot assist you, but nothing beats a failure like a bloody good try, so they say. But maybe John perhaps you too could, ease my troubled mind. Plumby played a track by Eleanore Mills entitled - Telegram, heard it before, very common to my ears, but guess what...............drew a complete blank . I am too "now" convinced there is a version sung by a different artist........... or may be not eh!!!!!! Cheers. Nick. Hi John, Hi Nick The answer to yer questions................... Alma Faye...........there 'could' be another version but I cannot place it meself at the moment BUT it is pretty remeniscent of Gloria Scott's 'That what you say' imho! Strange cos that other track being played by her from the same LP (I believed) is a rip-off of 'A case of too much love making' Eleanor Mills - Telegram.............yes there is a version on a 45 on the same label by Irene Reid. It's good but imho not as good as EM's version. Hope this helps chaps! See you both soon Cheers Steve

Steve Plumb Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Thanks for your swift reply Steve - but what is the Irene Reid/Eleanor Mills label as this will assist by search. Could you please help me out a little further, christ now I do sound like someone with special needs.... . Thanks for your assistance. Regards, A little less troubled listener - Nick. Sorry Nick, should have said, it's Astroscope. IR 45 should be around but the EM LP is a toughie, although it has been reissued in the last couple of years. The LP is called 'This is Eleanor Mills' and it's crammed full of brill tracks!!!! Cheers Steve

Steve Plumb Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Hmmm haven't heard this for years despite having my own copy . Quite a hard to find LP which I think is under-rated. Hi Steve Yes, it's dug back out at Plumb Towers after all these years too! Might play it on Friday if I feel it will fit into the set cos it's not an easy one to get away with that's for sure! Cheers Steve
Steve Plumb Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 .........just found out that Woods Empire 'Universal Love' sneaked out on a Tabu 45!!!!! It's usually John Benson that catches me out but this time it was Alan Paterson from Aberdeen (via Bully!) who pointed it out! So the search is now on for the 45! We live and learn! Cheers Steve

John Benson Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 (edited) I think Steve's right about the connection between the Alma Faye song and Gloria Scott's "That's what you say" I've given them both a few 'listen to's' and yes, there is a very strong resemblance between them But as has been said before when discussing the similarities between that 'other' song of Alma's and Gloria's "Too much lovemaking" - it might not be such a coincidence? Both Casablanca recordings at that, there may well be something else in common with the two sets of recordings? Anyway Steve, I don't think I was aware of the Woods Empire 45 - and was starting to check out the Alma Faye song to see if it was on a 45. But Daryl got there first See you at the Essence bar! Think this would have been about a decade before their LP on Branding Iron.
Steve G Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 This would have been from their buddah period when they were child stars I guess,,,,,,,,preferred them when they grew up into proper singers .....Steve
