Popular Post Alamo Posted May 24, 2018 Popular Post Posted May 24, 2018 Sums it up I’d say. No different to Rock N Roll or any other music genres. That was our time, still is for some and sadly not for others. Guess we are lucky to have had a music culture that has lived through our years. Alan 8
Popular Post Winsford Soul Posted May 24, 2018 Popular Post Posted May 24, 2018 That youth culture has made me the person that I am today. Don't really know any other way of life. Popular Post Tattoodave Posted May 24, 2018 Popular Post Posted May 24, 2018 Age is just a number, I'm still seventeen inside. I don't think life would be half as sweet without our music. 10
Guest BabyBoyAndMyLass Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 Agree with the general perception. A Youth Culture still in the hands of the same enthusiasts that might've aged somewhat but still feel the same. I'm in a 50s and 60s cabaret band and the people that followed the RnR and stuff still on their scene too, at a lot older than even the oldest soulies. Same with Punk and all the other movements where the people in it are still livin'...
Popular Post Leicester Boy Posted May 24, 2018 Popular Post Posted May 24, 2018 Forget age enjoy life. Dance and drink and love our scene till your last breath. 6
Popular Post Amsterdam Russ Posted May 24, 2018 Popular Post Posted May 24, 2018 As has already been said, there aren't really any "youth cultures" anymore, so why does it matter? Northern Soul has transcended "youth", which is about the finest and most solid testimonial anyone could give it. 11

Popular Post Soulsides Posted May 24, 2018 Popular Post Posted May 24, 2018 Some of us old men fought wars so the youth would have that same culture to pick up on later. Everyone is pretty tolerant these days when it comes down to different forms of music but I can readily recall having to run the gauntlet of the local skinheads who hated us for no other reason than.we liked something different to them and their culture. When I see kids now with thier spiky or coloured hair and wearing the t-shirts of pretend Punk bands like Green Day or Nirvana I laugh outrageously and think how much different it used to be when you'd have gotten a smack in the chops for looking like that once upon a time. The youth today haven't got a clue..they have it very easy in comparison. 11
Popular Post Mickjay33 Posted May 24, 2018 Popular Post Posted May 24, 2018 its not a youth culture its the soul fans CULTURE a way of life for us just keep on keeping on 4
Drew3 Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 There was a record a few years ago in the charts, some young American girl and one of the lines in the song was something like "punks with flowers in their hair"!!!!!! Always made me raise my eyes to the heavens when I heard that line! Clueless modern yooof! Regards. Drew. 1
Popular Post Zed1 Posted May 24, 2018 Popular Post Posted May 24, 2018 (edited) 'A youth culture left in the hands of old men'..... Sums it up for me. None of us can look at a youth scene objectively 40-50 years after the event. You can't simply go back and re-hear all those tracks again for the first time through teenage ears. I've learned and forgotten so much since then, Tracks I loved then - I hate now and vice-versa. People and places that shaped my memories have all gone or changed. NOTHING can ever replicate that feeling of your first nighter or hearing your fave track for the first time. Far too many of these old men forget what it was like as the new kid on the block and try and rewrite the history of scene to suite their own agenda and will happily tell anyone who will listen that 'their' version of events is in fact ''how it was' and they were all born rare soul fans. Popular Post Frankie Crocker Posted May 24, 2018 Popular Post Posted May 24, 2018 An old culture in the hands of youthful men as I see it. Vintage music from the 50’s and 60’s in the custodianship of 60 year old spinners and 20 year old backdroppers. The music keeps you young at heart. As has been mentioned many times on Soul-Source, folk of all ages rub shoulders at Allnighters and soul nights, Weekenders and Alldayers - the scene is progressive but has a fine history to look back on. It’s all magic to me as you drop the stylus on the record, hey presto, you’re transported back to the 60’s soundtrack, reminded of the 70’s and lapping it up in 2018. 6

Geeselad Posted May 25, 2018 Posted May 25, 2018 youth aint what it was IMHO. the divergence of traditional youth, pop, culture giving way to gaming, social media, action sports, sexting and F knows what else, has meant that youth cultures based around music and style, no longer have the same cultural value they once had. Youth sub cultures don't really exist in the same form. Teaching and working with teenagers for over 18 years and I'm really not envious of what they have. Its homogenised, trite and corporate on every level. The kids were begging me for Childish Gambino this morning, I dare say I would have heard the same request if I worked in France, Brazil or even Africa. There really nothing special about that, just another rapper making dollar. 3

Chalky Posted May 25, 2018 Posted May 25, 2018 when was it last a youth culture? Back in the 80s probably. Certainly isn't enough youth today to sustain an all-nighter scene which is a great shame.
