...... and Saying Peggy March isn't a Soul record on a scene that's FULL of records that AREN'T Soul is a somewhat silly statement as well.  This Scene has always been first and foremost about the dance floor, yet some would have you believe that for the last 50 years it's only been a super Rare black music scene destroyed by those Wigan infidels and their White Pop Crap.

Best I've heard was the lad who came over for a chat at the KGB in Sheffield about ten or so years back, said he didn't start going to Wigan until '83 and preferred the Highland Room to the main room.

I asked if he was there when Otis and Marvin appeared live in May '84, but he didn't go that week.

Who cares, I had a good night and went home sweatier than Daktari................. job done.

I never have been a NS fan ... my main niter eras were the 60's & 80's ... in the 60's, soul clubs played a much different mix of sounds to in the 70's .. from the 80's (& ever since) my main love has been Modern Soul, so I never really bought into Wigan era sounds (they hold zero old memories for me). BUT, I love soul; dance tempo, beat ballad, deep & slow, bluesy, gospelly, the lot ... music that exudes feeling & emotion ... so I have always sought / bought all such music ... I avoided listening to / buying many Casino era sounds as (in general) they're not for me. Doesn't mean I think they shouldn't mean sumat to YOU though.

BTW, while I'm on my soap-box, I'll put in a request ... I've got everything on this 63 R&B chart on original vinyl but I'm missing #20 ... please get in touch if you've got a spare copy ...

I do like lots of NS tracks just not a lot of the stuff that was played under the banner @ the Casino ... I have 100's of NS records (Platters, J&B Purify, Jackie Wilson, Garnet Mimms, Linda Lyndell, Carla Thomas, Precisions, Artistics, Solomon Burke, Showstoppers, Vernon Garrett, Maxine Brown, Chuck Jackson, +++) and have attended numerous Northern Soul events (niters, weekenders, live shows, local events & more) ... but as I don't like lots of the stuff that gets spun in the NS room, I go in the modern room to hear the classy stuff that's spun there. If less soulless rubbish was played in the Northern room, I'd perhaps spend more time in there.

I see this a lot. Some folks seem to think that 'Northern Soul' is a musical genre. With that in mind it'd be greatly appreciated by many if someone in the know would define this genre for us.

Here is a couple of records, let's compare their relative merits/lack of. One is unarguably a 'proper' soul record by an ethnic ensemble, the other does not fall into that category. Both are huge records in the canon. Both are huge favourites of mine.

The original question was why do people feel the need to pour scorn on someones' choices? I wouldn't dream of doing that, if someone loves a record I don't particularly get I'll say something like 'Yeah man it's a classic' and leave it at that, everyone's happy! It's a tact and diplomacy issue, some folks simply have neither. Simply saying that something is 'shite...end of' is as if you have the casting vote, the last word, what you say goes... And that is simply not true, if you don't like it/them fair enough, but why say so as if you're word matters! That's my issue with that.

Getting back to the 'New scene' though, recently I was at an event and Bobby Garrett 'ICGA' was dropped, cleared the floor!  I think it was a matter of folks not knowing it at all. My lass has recently been getting Bobbie Smith 'Walk on into my heart' played on various radio shows and the record is being lauded and has become sought after in our circle of friends/DJs, we are astounded that these folks who supposedly have a lifetime of NS history under their belt are only just now getting to know this one. Not only that but these people are claiming to have 'discovered' it! LoL It's a huge oldie that my Mrs has loved for forty years and has turned them onto it, they then take the credit for knowing it! Can't imagine anyone with a genuine history on the NS scene not knowing it. There's a lot of bluff and fakery going on, I'm sure we've all seen examples of this. Easy to suss them out though, if they only know the sounds we get now then...

Regarding returnees, if they have returned then by definition they must've been around before. Unless it's people who maybe went once or twice. I have met people who are quite open about leaving the scene to go and do 'grown-up' stuff like raise a family and working, also people who have reinvented themselves as a 'Soulie' with no previous experience who are absolutely charming. It's digressed a little bit, also the issue of folks telling you you're songs of choice are rubbish as if they know better than you, that can apply to anyone.

I enjoy the 21st C scene, the young crowd are charming and some very passionate about the music, they read up and study the records and are not bound up in the fake authenticity trap because they are simply too young. The dressers up, I find great fun and add colour and diversity.

The scene has always had it's BSers and it's arrogant know it all types. Not much has changed really. The thread can just as easily be used to discuss positives as well as negatives.

Yes I agree the returnees have obviously been around before, it’s the ones that have been absent for 30years ,plus in some cases but bullshit people who don’t know them that they’ve never left and loathe to admit it , I’ve actually no problem that they left the scene , makes no difference to me and the ones that are open about it , no problem, just can’t understand the liars. I'm like a lot of 'us'... When I started shortly after WC finished I hung around with the WC crowd in my area. We went all over as you had to then because events were sparse and scattered. We had no dress code at all, we just wore whatever. I've dressed as a Punk, a Goth, a Sweaty and also just in 'normal' kind of trousers and shirt or TShirt and Jeans. Nowadays I dress a bit 'hipsters', Waiscut, maybe check shirt, jeans sometimes chinos, you get the idea, plus I have long hair like a 70s rocker, or more likely 70s soulie (think Rory Gallagher hairstyle) sometimes I slick it back into a quiff... Well the new breed wear a lot of Fred Perry, unless they are the dressing up types (fine with me). well the Fred Perry lot can be very patronising towards me, like I was born yesterday and only discovered soul music this morning (although my definition of soul music is confused in some folks eyes) because I don't wear the uniform. Truth is I never did, and that is where they show their ignorance because the scene as I knew it never had the uniform, you wore the fashion of the day or if you had a style no matter how wacky, like Punk style for example, you were accepted, it was one of the great beauties of the scene to me, as long as you weren't a dick you were ok no matter what you wore. I either laugh it off and say nothing or I might say some stuff that only someone with history would know... I'm not objecting to anyone at all, it's their attitude to others that irks sometimes. My attitude is just easy going guy, knows a little bit been around a little bit, I don't patronise anyone and often feel patronised myself and can get a bit offended by other peoples' attitudes. You live and learn though, next time a quick grunt as a greeting and avoid. Easy really it is! As long as I'm not considered a moan arse LoL, worried now I might be coming across as a moan arse myself! Haha! Nah can't see that hapnin!

Interesting, that's about when I first heard it, surely it's scene history goes back further than that though? Might make a thread on the record and see if we can find out more, discovery, first plays, DJs etc...

Curious to know why you need to share with us the fact you don't like 'That's not love'? Surprised at Soul Sam, maybe getting a bit embittered?

It isn't the law that you have to like it, that is down to that subjective thing we call 'taste' or the lack of, but a couple of questions if you'll indulge me? Purely in the interests of research.

1) Why you need to tell us,

and

2) Why exactly do you dislike it so much?

As i said its passion and i think a justified contempt at what some newcomers excuse for taste is.
