Wasn't Gloria Jones the first ever live act there? 74, possibly first anniversary. Or maybe early 75?

Hi Tension played a concert there. It was before I went - 78 or 79 ish.  It was advertised in Radio Times in the   "In Concert (or whatever)" programme around 10 pm on Radio 1 on Saturday night. The reason I remember is because I was going out and I  asked my sister to record it for me and she forgot.  I'm sure it was advertised as "Live at Wigan Casino" but it was almost certainly pre-recorded (ie a recorded live performance).

I can tell you that 39 years ago last night  14th April  79 . the Elgins appeared at the Casino.  How do I know I hear you ask. It was the night that I was meeting up  with my absolutely  stunning girlfriend Karen  and on the way I called into a local pub to see who was going the nighter . Met a female friend Julie  who asked where i was heading . She asked me to take her as she had never been a nighter.. walked up the stairs to the top balcony to meet Karen who saw me with  this friend Julie  . She burst into tears and run off before I could explain.  That was the last I ever saw of my model. Often wonder  !!!

I actually ended up marrying julie.

It was 40+ years ago Ste, Are you sure you've not got confused with that other popular combo from Wigan, 'Charlie Chalky & The Blueys'.

That would make sense.  Perfect sense.  I thought I had seen / heard someone sing super love live. But as Gaz said 40 years ago memory  bit blurred.  Thank you.

Tony Blackburn in1979 singing , I'll do anything.

I kid you not.

He writes about that in his autobiography "Poptastic". Tells of how no matter how much he insisted he was actually TB, someone was absolutely chuffed to get the autograph of Lenny Gamble.

Nobody on here by any chance?

Did all the aforementioned artists perform at the all nighters ? I take it the original poster is asking this . I heard Betty Wright was one of the best , wouldn’t know myself was too young , just saw Edwin , shit hot , he’d just hit pay dirt with ‘ contact ‘ and was just releasing “happy radio” that intro when he was revving up on stage ! Might be a bit poppie but gives me a tingle anyway!!

R Dean Taylor July 20th 1974, Marvelettes March 24th 1979, The Elgins April 14th 1979, Betty Wright April 26th 1975, Jackie Wilson May 10th 1975. These are some of the dates I have. The only live act I saw there was Edwin Starr 1974/5. I was at the first anniversary, I am pretty certain there was no live act that night.

I didn't miss a single nighter up until late November 74, and have absolutely no recollection of R Dean Taylor appearing. Maybe the chemicals had more of an effect on me than I previously thought. I always believed the first live act was Gloria Jones, (who, btw, was god awful).

To add to the list of the previously mentioned .....Archie Bell and the Drells,  Barbara Pennington, Evelyn Thomas,  - Not sure about James Wells , and How's about Nosmo King ! / The Javells    not forgetting Billy Butler

Detroit Emeralds ( Promoting their Album ) and wait for it ... Yes James Brown  who came to The Casino ( because he had heard so much about it )  his road crew set up the full rig only for him to pull out at the last minute

The only live singer I saw, as I really didn`t like live music at nighters interfering with my dancing was the bloke from a TV add for a soul album (Possibly 1975) black guy with a bald head, looked like a Malteaser. He didn`t really do anything as  I remember, maybe just a promotional visit. I used to sod off upstairs in Ms.

Hopefully Kev will be along with the name and perhaps a definitive list.

Karen says Hi! :D
