Popular Post Soulfulsolutions Posted March 4, 2018 Popular Post Posted March 4, 2018 (edited) Not sure this’ll be on anyone’s wants list, but I’ll give it a go… Message any questions or to make an offer Freddie Chavez – They’ll never know why / Baby I’m sorry – Look 5010 M- Offers The Look label was a relatively short-lived subsidiary of the Starday-King Records Inc merger, which featured Bethlehem, De Luxe and Federal as the others in the stable. Starday Records itself was formed in 1952 in Beaumont, Texas by Pappy Daily and Jack Starnes, Jr. The "Starday" name is a combination of Starnes' and Daily's names an the label recorded Country & Western, Cajun and sacred music. To cater for specific audiences the Look label was supposed to have specialised in mellow rock music, but as with most independent labels in the US they will always feature at least one track that UKs soul aficionados expose, interpret as Soul and take to their hearts. Freddie Chavez was from the South Broadway area of Albuquerque, New Mexico and was the creative force behind Thee Chekkers, with Freddie on vocals & keys, Rolando Baca lead guitar, Severo Flores sax, Gabby Gabaldon trumpet, Gene Romero bass and Ralph Gonzales-drums. Thee Chekkers found their way under the stewardship of John Wagner from Delta Records, he also owned the best studio in town, resulting in their 1968 release on Look 5007 “Please Don't Go / Lack of Love”. Whilst Wagner produced both songs they were written by Chavez. Both tracks got solid airplay on local Duke City radio stations because they looked after their local acts. Thee Chekkers didn’t record anything else under that name but appear behind Freddie on his 1967 Look 5010 double sider “They'll Never Know Why / Baby I'm Sorry”. The top side has ripped up dance floors throughout the UK since its introduction in the 70s. He is also reputedly Dave Newman of “Make up your mind” fame! Freddie moved on to Chicano Soul with the Majestics, and latterly with the Spinning Wheel, a show band with a full horn section that toured the Western states and enjoyed a successful run on the Vegas strip. In 1974 Freddie formed the Freddie Chavez Foundation, which is still active, favouring jazzy soul numbers, pop standards, and every style of Spanish music. Freddie will appear live at SOULTRIPUSA in Vegas between 15-22 March 2018, no doubt some of his immense Northern sides will be performed and will be something special to witness. This blue stock copy is as they say, “as rare as hen’s teeth”, only a handful known, which puts the already hard to find original demos into the shade. A near mint playing surface, which plays back with superb fidelity has only one blemish, a couple of tiny pressed in dimples on the flip slide, but they have no effect on play. There is a red felt tip A on “They’ll never know why” label, and as with most 50 year old 45s there is some light ring wear. If you’re tired with the anthem on the top side, which is brilliant anyway, the underplayed crossover flip is just waiting to take centre stage for the next 50 years…… Freddie you’re a “Genius” Sir. Up for offers, starting at £2000. Will close at 9pm Thursday 8th March 2018. Bidders only appraised of the bid history and being outbid. PayPal as friends or add 4% or bank transfer please. Postage: Special Delivery (Fully insured) Included Overseas to be discussed.
