Guest themroc Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 Tracking down a Gale Garnett tune I'll Cry Alone, convinced it was a male singer, only to find out he was a she??? Happened a few times before but in reverse, anyone else have a similar problem?? And no reminiscing about Thailand Anyhoo found this in my "research" (honest darling), probably the cheeseyest music video I've seen. ENJOY!!
Winsford Soul Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 I cry alone, Used to have a black RCA issue, very underrated track. ( bought it off my late mate Gary Beattie R.I.P ) Steve

Guest themroc Posted March 3, 2018 Posted March 3, 2018 Androgyny personified Jackie Shane. Storming version and the best tune about heroin ever written. IMO
Guest Shufflin Posted March 3, 2018 Posted March 3, 2018 when I first heard this I thought it was a female singer

AlanB Posted March 3, 2018 Posted March 3, 2018 I thought The Vals had a female lead for years after buying it. 3
Guest Josep Manuel Concernau Robles Posted March 3, 2018 Posted March 3, 2018 During years, the whole 70's, I was convinced that Randy Vanwarmer was a female singer! (I have this hit in a "SOUL" compilation by Marble Records, jointly with The Real Thing, The Moments and Norman Connors)
The Yank Posted March 3, 2018 Posted March 3, 2018 (edited) The first time I heard "Forget It" by the Sandpebbles (later C & the Shells) I thought the lead singer was a man. Edited March 3, 2018 by the yank

In the 60s high falsetto voices were all the rage. Billy Stuart, Horrace Andy, in Jamaica, to many to the point of being a bit sickly but fair play this tune hits the spot. Not never heard it before and so another quest begins
The Yank Posted March 4, 2018 Posted March 4, 2018 Little Herman sounds like Little Helen (at least to me) on "Gotta Keep On Walking" and "One Out Of A Hundred". The lead singer of Spiral Starecase has a voice that could be either male or female on "More Today Than Yesterday".
grantdyche Posted March 4, 2018 Posted March 4, 2018 The Velvet Satins "Nothing Can Compare To You" Always sounded female to me as a youngster,Now it sounds like a young fella,Never knew either way,Still a great tune tho !
Guest Josep Manuel Concernau Robles Posted March 4, 2018 Posted March 4, 2018 Is not a soul but boogaloo / salsa male singer with a "female" flavor, the great Héctor LaVoe:

I think the Lonely Lover side by the Inverts really sounds feminine, would dearly love that tune.

There's a FEMALE singer who, IMHO, have the same voice, Sheryl Henry from the group South Shore Commission. You can appreciate it on their cover of "Any Day Now". Who sounds more "male" or "more female"...?:

MY DAYS!!! All I hear is heartbreak. Like Jackie Shane how hard must it have been? It's like reading Iceberg Slim for the first time.
Roburt Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 (edited) Jerri / Jerry Jones started out in the music biz in Cleveland. She was a woman who dressed as a man. She MC'd / sang / joked, etc. Moved down to Miami & teamed up there with Jerry Williams. Made friends with the Jamericans in the area & then moved again, to Jamaica. With the hatred of gays on the island, she had to dress as a woman there ... had a UK 45 release of a 4 Tops cover that she'd cut on the island ... Edited June 16, 2018 by Roburt 1
Roburt Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 (edited) A soul cover by Jerry Jones (a 1970 track) ... THEN ... her covering a Gene McDaniels song Edited June 16, 2018 by Roburt
The Yank Posted July 5, 2018 Posted July 5, 2018 Is it just me or do the lead singers (one male, one female) sound more than just a little alike ??
