I've heard Lester was known for dancing in local clubs and on tv (not sure about the car part of the story though). Major Lance got his break as a featured dancer on Jim Lounsbury's "Time For Teens" and then got a deal with Mercury Records. I think the Major was well aware of the Northern Soul scene though.
