Which of course was why we were there ! Paul James. Don't think I've heard either played at a venue since 73 or thereabouts. Same with Bobby's "Shoes". But as we keep on getting told, the oldies are all "played out" now, aren't they? There are two things that this thread has accomplished so far. One, it has brought back some truly great memories of long forgotten tunes to those of us of a certain age. Two, to those younger members who weren't there at the start, it must be an eye opener to tunes that they have possibly never even heard before. Oh yeah, a third one. Maybe DJs will now buck up their collective acts when putting together an oldies spot, and actually play some that have been mentioned on this thread instead of sticking to the tried and tested so-called Top 500.
Kenb Posted May 29, 2018 Posted May 29, 2018 I asked Pete Roberts a few years back ( i think...it was a few years back anyway) if The Equals- 'Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys' was played? I had vivid memories of the song-and the throng- but not the venue. If it was played, It would have been at the 'knockings of the club's final throw of the dice' late 70? “OK, I’m loosened up now, children" - was it just a faded memory of a different venue?

You’ve not heard ‘shoes ‘ played out since 73! It certainly was at venues 80s-90s and later that I attended, Blackburn, Bradford normanton Manchester etc

Came back onto the scene travelling down to Niters once a month, and most definitely didn't hear "Shoes" played even once. And that was at the more oldies orientated gigs such as Keele, Blackburn, Bradford, Kings Hall etc. Maybe I was just unlucky!
Tomangoes Posted May 29, 2018 Posted May 29, 2018 Including the seventies stuff, there must have been as many great records discovered between 75 and 95 as there was between 63 and 75. I did say discovered, not made. As much as I was playing catch up when I joined the scene in late 75, you must have also been playing catch up in 95. Shoes and Yum Yum Tree were big records for Bub at Cleggy Wintergardens around 79. Ed

Perhaps one or two, to my ears, held up against the sounds from before 75. As time has gone on, I have slowly come to love many of these tunes. No, none of them ever "hit me between the eyes", like Duke Browner, Moses Smith and Lenis Guess did in 72, but they most certainly have grown on me. As for Bub, I have heard of him, but I don't think he was on the scene when I left, and I certainly didn't meet him after I returned. If he did indeed play both Shoes and YumYum tree, then he had taste!

Ha ha joey , your maybe like an unlucky chap I know, went to a football match ( can’t remember which ) there were four goals and he missed everyone, going for a pie , 1st goal, toilet visit 2nd goal , lighting a cig 3rd , 4th toilet again
Tomangoes Posted May 29, 2018 Posted May 29, 2018 (edited) Bub was hard to miss...RIP Sure he was a Wheel goer... It keeps raining followed by I love music, nobody else could get away with that! Ed Edited May 29, 2018 by tomangoes Spello
Autumnstoned Posted May 29, 2018 Posted May 29, 2018 Has The Olympics -Secret Agents been mentioned? Came out on British Fontana so imagine it got played. Doesn't sound dated like some oldies. 2
Autumnstoned Posted May 29, 2018 Posted May 29, 2018 (edited) The Drifters - If You Don't Come Back - I found this in a charity shop a couple of weeks ago for 50p on UK London Atlantic and was surprised when i got it home how good it is. Good example of early soul. I wonder if it got played in the early days when there fewer tunes available for the DJ's to spin. Edited May 29, 2018 by autumnstoned

I knew a lot of the Leeds and west yorks crew, and he certainly didn't hang around with them as far as I recall. It keeps raining? Wonderful. I love music? Hmmm!

They must have been responsible for quite a decent percentage of the tunes played in most Northern youth clubs.

Guest Posted May 29, 2018 Posted May 29, 2018 (edited) Remember first hearing GPYD at the Casino, early 74. Can't recall it ever being played prior to then, but hey-ho, most folks know that my memory is shot, so I could well be wrong. But their back catalogue is crammed full of stuff not just as good, but in some cases far better. Their more widely known offerings were played to death at youth clubs up and down the country, and even in mainstream ballroom discos in the early 70's. A VERY underrated group, too easily dismissed by the self styled cognoscent? Edited May 29, 2018 by Guest

Les C always said he was ashamed he played that, and André Brasseur against his better judgment because they were popular. We still have his old Dark Red vinyl 50 box that he used to DJ from at the Wheel. Dx

Hooker1951 Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 Gene Pitney Heartbreaker was a good stomper just to let you know we were dancing to that tune in 1968 so believe me it was already discovered and I wouldn't be ashamed in the least to play it, I still do and it still gets a great response ML
