DJSpinko Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 Hi everyone. I'm a mature student (60) at the University of East Anglia in my 3rd year as an undergraduate. I'm writing an article on the UK Tamla-Motown Tour 1965 and the Stax Volt Tour 1967. I'm really finding it difficult finding any music, national or local newspaper reviews of these tours. I've managed to find one for Wigan 1965 and Croydon 1967. If there is anyone out there who can help, it would be greatly appreciated. Also if there is anyone who saw the tours who would just like to drop a couple of lines about the show that would be really helpful. Thanks Cris

Thanks Cris Plenty out there on the inter web thingy regarding the Motown tour. The Stax Volt one less so. Try these:- https://deeveess.wordpress.com/2009/08/23/memories-and-monuments-to-the-1977-european-tour-of-the-staxvolt-revue/ https://rocknrollroutemaster.com/2013/07/18/hit-the-road-stax/ and of course:- I'm also pretty sure that way back in the mists of time I read a review of the Finsbury Park concert in Blues and Soul. BTW, that gig was recorded live, and issued as an album on UK Stax. The Paris concert was also recorded, and issued as Volume 2. Again, this is a long time ago, so I'll have to say its qualified according to memory! Edited February 4, 2018 by Guest addition
Roburt Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 The Motown tour (even though they added top UK draw Georgie Fame) was very badly attended, the venues much less than half full each night .... BUT THEN... the TV show to help promote the tour (the RSG special introduced by Dusty Springboard) wasn't shown till just about every show on the tour had already been staged. There's a film of the acts on their tour bus up on youtube (or at least there used to be, ain't checked recently). The Stax tour was a success from the minute the artists landed in Europe. It was the 1st time the artists like Booker T and the members of the MG's realised they were revered musicians outside of the US. Stax was never the same after that tour, coz the musicians wanted to be treated / paid as top players, not just as some guys who were the studio group at a small Memphis studio. It was difficult to get tickets to the Stax shows coz Otis was top of the bill with all those other Stax stars also on the show. They played a big venue in Leeds (only one any where near to where I lived back then) but the tickets went quickly. Think they also played Manchester but my memory ain't what it was anymore.
