Tony Turner Posted February 2, 2018 Posted February 2, 2018 (edited) By way of a change I thought that I’d make myself a compilation of Stax/Atlantic type sounds a la Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke etc. I’m having a lack of imagination problem however so any suggestions of mid to uptempo sounds in that vein would be extremely welcome. Thanks in advance for any help. Edited February 2, 2018 by Tony Turner Spelling
The Yank Posted February 2, 2018 Posted February 2, 2018 Here's a great song that sounds just like a Sam and Dave record . 1
Guest Posted February 2, 2018 Posted February 2, 2018 Homer Banks, James Carr for starters. Obvious, I know, but that'd be where I'd start. Eddie Parker could growl a bit too!
Mr Fred Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 (edited) Here's a few that I can think of at this early time of the day Eddie Floyd :-Things get better, Bring it on home to me. Sam & Dave:-Soul Man, Hold on i'm coming. Johnnie Taylor :-Who's making love, I ain't particular, Friday Night. Staple Singers:-Respect Yourself, I'll take you there. Carla Thomas :-B-A-B-Y. Roy Docker:-Mellow Moonlight. The Short Kuts :- Your eyes may shine. Hope this helps. All the best, Fred Apologies as the layout hasn't come out as I typed it. Edited February 3, 2018 by Mr Fred
Roburt Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Should include a few by William Bell, Don Covay, Soul Brothers 6, Mad Lads, Astors, Sam & Bill and the like.
Kenb Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Head to any web site on the Muscle Shoals studios-Quincy, Fame, etc. You’ll find plenty of inspiration.
Guest Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 OP wrote regarding a compilation of Stax-Atlantic TYPE sounds. I took this to mean similar sounding tunes, but NOT released on either Stax or Atlantic, and not by any of those labels artists? If so, and I'm not being a complete doofus, how about Oscar Toney Jr. "No Sad Songs". Wheel classic, rarely heard today.
Tomangoes Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Oh.....................best seek clarification Perhaps a stax artist on a different label? Ed
Tony Turner Posted February 3, 2018 Author Posted February 3, 2018 (edited) Hi, any artist, any label. Just interested in that type of sound as opposed to the smoother 'motowny' stuff. Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Edited February 3, 2018 by Tony Turner
Glenssoulsounds Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 HOW ABOUT THE SEEMINGLY UNKNOWN "SHE'S SO GOOD TO ME" WILSON PICKETT, FRENCH ONLY E.P. ? NORTHERN DANCER (ITS ON U-TUBE) CHECK IT OUT ,, SHOULD BE A MONSTER !!!....GLEN.

Mick Bol Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 A little correction Joey, you prob' know this. Oscar Toney Jr sang "No Sad Song". Joe Simon sang "No Sad Songs". both Wheel classics. Two versions, same song.
Guest Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 (edited) Absolutely, in fact the Joe Simon version, in my humble opinion, is far superior to Oscars. I only referenced the Oscar version due to it being the grittier of the two, and therefore more in keeping with what the OP was possibly looking for. And speaking of what the OP was initially asking for, and if he's still looking at Sam and Dave, avoid the obvious, and plump for "Soul sister brown sugar" and "I thank you" Both top quality dancers, played most everywhere, "back in the day", and would still fill a floor today. Tomangoes Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Love this group and had plenty of gritty hits. This is one of the lesser known ones. Ed
Mgm 1251 Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 Here’s Wilmer and the Dukes, giving up a fine impersonation of Otis Redding...
Shinehead Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 (edited) Always loved this, flip to '' Cracked Up Over You '' written by Eddie Floyd. Edited February 4, 2018 by shinehead 1
Dimples Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 Arthur Conley - Hand in glove - Atlantic. Issued as a 45 in Spain only.
Guest Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 From the Knock on Wood album, Eddie's take on the old Pearlean Grey Torch monster tune. People used to slate me for playing this in 74, but I still think its a creditable version, and a fine mid tempo dancer.
Guest Spain pete Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 Barbara lewis l can't breakaway. From your love . top tune! 👍🎶🎶👌

Outofstep Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 (edited) Here,s a couple of tracks that may fit the bill. Sam & Dave : Said I wasn't gonna tell nobody. Clarence Carter : Funky fever. Oh, another one that I forgot to add: Ann Mason : You can't love me in the midnight hour. Edited February 4, 2018 by outofstep forgot to add artist and record title

Guest Soulatthedale Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 These two sound pretty hard: Judy Clay You Busted My Mind Z Z Hill You Just Cheat And Lie ( why cant an oldies D J give this a few spins and give it the recognition it deserves)
manus Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 Both sides of this fantastic hard Soul sounds. 1
Guest Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 I'm not sure I know what a 'hard' soul record is. Is it opposite to a 'soft' one then. No I am confused. However looking at how people have intepreted 'hard' I'm suggesting this one featuring the angelic tones of Bobby Harris. Fantastic southern soul.
The Yank Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 Shorty Long- "Function At The Junction" Sandpebbles- "Forget It" or "If You Didn't Hear Me The First Time" Dyke and the Blazers- "Funky Broadway" Wilson Pickett- "I'm A Midnight Mover"
