I heard that they might be playing Ronnie Scott's in London in January, but couldn't find any information on the RS website.

I would love to catch them, having missed out last time due to bridesmaid duties.

If anyone knows any more, please let us know!

I have checked out the Royal Albert Hall website up to , and including , July ; there is nothing listed as yet .

I saw them at BB King's place on Times Square in New York last December . They were excellent .

Hi pardon my ignorance

but are they touring as the funk brothers or something else

and where do you go to buy tickets?

just done a search and couldn't find anything

Pete,

It's Jack Ashford and Joe Hunter with a few "guest" musicians (Ray Monette and a few others), and some younger talent that they have nurtured. They are supposed to be shit hot mate. They play to rave reviews here in the States.

Hope this helps.

Dave

Bearsy old son, shouldn't that be "IVY Joe Hunter" , the Motown writer and sometime artist ... who was a completely different guy to the black country/blues legend Ivory Joe Hunter ?

Must have been a heavy weekend over there in the UK with people thinking it was New Orleans RnB legend Maurice Williams performing Classical Gas (see other thread) , not pop guitarist Mason Williams.....

Check out this link - the websites opening page is slow but other than that its a really easy site to use.

Just booked two tickets for the 25th. Should be a top night, went to the last one at the Apollo and really enjoyed it sure this will be of the same quality.

Picked up two front row tickets on Saturday myself. Called at the ticket office - too mean to pay the booking fee!!! They were £25 each .

See you there Sean.

Hope I don't sound too cynical here but after reading the ad for this gig and also forums in the States it seems there are only 2 Original Funk Brothers in this line up. It also seems that another version of the Funks are trying to get a tour going with the likes of Uriel Jones featured. There also seems to be a legal situation about ownership over who owns the name of the Funk Brothers. Its a shame Jack Ashford can't get the same line up as previous. I myself am going to the Manchester gig but I can honestly say I would like to see more of the original motown session men involved.

I know there was a bit of a rift between some of the remaining Funks, but what has become of Bob Babbit, Joe Messina, And Uriel Jones, such a shame so late in the day that they should fall out, I saw them also at Manchester Appollo on their UK tour a couple of years ago and was in awe of them,:ohmy:

Jimmy think it was said earlier in the thread that this is Jack Ashford and Joe Hunter's 13 piece band. After Jack Ashford and Joe Hunter parted ways with the remaining funks they formed this with some of America's hottest young talent, Dave Moore stateside say's they get rave reviews where ever they play and it seems that way from looking around.

I agree its sad to see that the group can still have troubles so late in the game and after so many years together, but I am looking forward to seeing Jack and Joe live again and am sure this show will be fantastic.

Hi Mate,

As far as I can make out, the rift came about when the guys were in Europe last time. They split with their manager Allan Slutsky and subsequently split into the two factions. Babbit is still playing and has just published a book whilst Joe Messina retired after the guys won their long overdue Grammys. So..in terms of actual "original" band members it would seem that The Funks as a relatively complete entity will never be seen (or heard) on the same stage again. Sad but true.

I would have thought that Jack and Joe had every right to present themselves as Funk Brothers though. When you take into account The Temptations and more recently The Four Tops line ups (great singers though they are), at least J and J were in at the beginning as "original" members.

I've tried to stay up to speed with the members as they are my musical heroes but it's difficult when "personalities" come into it. So to anyone thinking of not attending any of the gigs because it's not the "real Funks" I would say this.....Joe Hunter tickled the ivories on some of the greatest songs to ever be recorded in Detroit and Mr Ashford's tambourine and vibraphone breathed excitement into the some of the Snakepit's truly memorable peformances. That's how I'll always view them, it would be churlish not to.

The musicians they have put together are some of the best in the land. The youngsters they have touring with them have been handpicked by them. Give them a chance.....I'm sure you won't regret it. If someone had suggested that Jack Ashford and Joe Hunter would be playing live in UK 20 years ago, we'd never have believed it......ENJOY!

Dave

Exactly Dave,

To see Joe and Jack will be a pleasure. The Tempts are back over in November and despite only Otis Williams surviving from the original line up I'll be there to see them again because this particular line up of Tempts with GC Cameron, Ron Tyson, Terry Weeks and Joe Herndon are fantastic, it will be a pleasure to see them live.

I would suggest to see Joe Hunter and Jack Ashford on stage is a blessing especially at their time of life. I think Joe is about 84 now. Bearing in mind they were 'Pied Piper' productions, they are doing what they do best. Not only did they play on the stuff, they wrote many songs together. They did their own thing in 1965 and they are doing it now. In addition, I think Ray Monette played on much of their stuff back in the day. May be they should call it the 'Pied Piper' review or something!

Hi

Certainly is, I saw the Temptations at Sheffield last year. Four Tops & Chris Clark. Brilliant.

As I say The Temptations have just announced an 11 date UK tour across November next year, un-sure whether The Four Tops will be joining them.

From a biased point of view I hope its just The Temptations who will be touring, I've never seen the group on their own only on a shared billing. As much as I've enjoyed seeing The Tops just this once I would love a full set from The Tempts.

I'll post tour details as soon as I get them....

You may be a little disappointed. I saw the Temps on tour on their own in Llandudno 4 or 5 years ago. It was a good show but more or less the same as when they were with the Tops. They still only did just over an hour.

What seemed ridiculous was that the support act was a stand up comedian!!!

You have to really ask who puts these shows together.

Chris Clark was an unexpected surprise at Manchester but if I’m honest I thought she was awful; although preferable to the comedian.

The tour organisers in this country often don't know who they're aiming at and what product to aim at them thats a big problem.

Possibly because we're a specialist audience is the reason it may not appeal to us who knows.

I would love to see The Tempts in Vegas or anywhere in hte States on their own a full show with a full set list. :-)

But thats only a pipe dream, be good to see them again whatever.

Saw the Funk Brothers and Dennis Edwards' Temptations open the Detroit Jazz Festival in September. Doubt whether Ray Monette will be with Jack Ashford - he was with the 'true' Funks, with Uriel Jones, Babbit, Eddie Willis plus another drummer, keyboards, horn section and three vocalists. They were superb. In the 'Tempts' line up was David Sea and Ollie Woodson and they too were brilliant. If either of these come over we are all in for a treat. News may be forthcoming.

The previous tour featured keyboardist JOSEPH E. (Joe) HUNTER, not Ivy Jo or Ivory Jo. He is the true Pied Piper.

yeah Dennis Edwards tempts review do well in the states. For me The Temptations are far more polished obviously but nonetheless would love to see the Tempts review over here.
