HANK SOUL MAN MULLEN: He Upset Your Dream / Listen * AUDEL, M-, wol, 100.- Euro
Funky edged Northern, that got reissued by Daptone's subsidiary "Ever Soul" in 2008. Flip this baby over for a deepsoul tearjerker, that ticks all the boxes. This is Hank Mullen's only 45, he died shortly after he recorded this in his mid-twenties of a heart attack. Vinyl has no marks and looks super clean, but has a sleightly weird "pale" look to it, with almost no shine.

THE ELEGANTS: Ooh Poo Pah Doo * INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS, M-, 75.- Euro
This is a story of an unreleased record and a big mess up. The Elegants, a salt & pepper group from Tacoma, entered a studio in the mid sixties to record two soul covers - Jessie Hill's "Ohh Poo Pah Doo" and Hank Ballard's "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go". The pressing plant messed up the label and credited the recording to Larry Beck, the label then decided to print correct labels, but someone forgot to add the artist on the label after this double fuck up, the band decided to throw everything in the bin - nice try, good bye. In other words, this record was never officially released and someone found the remaining stock with both sides of the label prints (one side has the artist on it and the side featured hasn't). So, what you get is a mint copy of this hard knocking Jessie Hill cover and the prints of both sides of the label.

Super obscure 70's dancer here by an artist out of Los Angeles, the label was owned by Matt Furin, a local recordman, who ran 'Wig-Wag' records and 'Round U' along with "Jo Jo" and released local talents from all genres. Elroy shares the songwriting credits with Ricky Lance, another local L.A. singer, who recorded some highly indemand 45s for his own Bren label. This one is a regular spin for UK DJ Brett Franklin and it's pretty much under the radar for most collectors. Uptempo, soulful, with a hint of crazyness, due to the wicky-wacky-sounds on the intro, but surely taylormade for some dancefloor action.

In terms of soulfulness this record is hard to beat. Deep soul at it's very very best and and as a bonus you get an alluring flipside, that most folks overlooked for the sheer quality of the topside. Highly recomended!

CASH McCALL: More Power To You / I'll Always Love You * PS, VG-/G+, uptmepo side plays loud and proud! 50.- Euro
Lots of light marks on this windy city rarity, but the uptempo side plays great! The ballad flip has more surface noise, but is still on the enjoyable side of things. Powerhouse, funky soul, that will have it's day sooner or later. A hard record to find, it took me ages to upgrade this.

One of the best funk records out of Cgicago with a smashing Syl Johnson production. Flip is a hell of a good ballad. This copy is well loved and was quite obviously stored without a sleeve; many light scuffs, but nothing to distracting. The quiter flip has some more background noise, hence the price.

VERNON GARRETT: If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time * MODERN VG+, wol, 40.- Euro
Not many artists can look back on a career as long as Vernon Garret's impressive run of releases. Three decades of delivering hard edged soul and Blues with his first release dating back to 1961 for Imperial records and his last record released in 2002 for Evejim records in Los Angeles. This here is an iconic Northern Soul spin, uptempo, adrenalin fueled top class 60's dance soul. Whether you like this for a trip down memory lane (I've been to the Wigan Casino bla bla bla) or you just get caught by the raw soulfulness of this 1966 outing (or maybe both?), 60's dance soul doesn't get much better then this!

The magic sweet voice of a teenage Damon Harris, who later replaced Eddie Kendricks when he dropped out of the Temptations. In fact, The Vandals started out as The Young Temptations and changed their name after a lawsuit form Berry Gordy. Anyway, brilliant sweet group soul outing recorded under the aegies of the Isley Brothers, extremly soulful and when the raw voiced singer drops in, you can't help but think of the Vanguards recordings for Lamp records. Highly recomended!

What a surprise, that Polydor released this mellow soul masterpiece in Tito's Yugoslavia. Despite the fact, that this is one of the finest slices of 70's soul, a Yugoslavian picture sleeve of this, is something, that I wouldn't have expected to be released in a socialist country.

Some surface scratches, nothing to distracting on this Houston/Texas double header. Side 1 offers flawless floating soul with great vocals by Cal Thomas. Flip it over for a clubby funk tune, that sounds awesome when played out. Record has mild surface marks, nothing to bad and plays just fine.
