Flip this baby over for a deepsoul tearjerker, that ticks all the boxes. This is Hank Mullen's only 45, he died shortly after he recorded this in his mid-twenties of a heart attack. Vinyl has no marks and looks super clean, but has a sleightly weird "pale" look to it, with almost no shine. soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/hankmullenheupsetyour.mp3 soundfile 2: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/hankmullenlisten.mp3 ELEMENTS: Save It For A Rainy Day / Freedom Jam * BIG STREET, M-, 100.- Euro Fantastic sweet group soul rola backed up by a rugged ghetto funk workout. soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/elementssaveitfor.mp3 soundfile 2: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/elementsfreedom.mp3 THE PROFILES: I Still Love You * BAMBOO,M-, drill hole in lbl, 75.- Euro Clean copy of this simply awesome group soul 60's dancer. soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/profilesistillove.mp3 DEEN DODGE: A Perfect Love * JAX, M-, 75.- Euro Rare cali Modern Soul dancer with a jazzy edge to it. soundfile: https://www.hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/deendodgeaperfect_3.mp3 SHONI: It Must Be Love * RAV, VG to VG+, 75.- Euro Memphis 70's soul rarity on the same label as Willie Darrington's classic "Never Should Have Walked Away" and the super rare Veda Brown. soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/shoniitmustbelove.mp3 THE ELEGANTS: Ooh Poo Pah Doo * INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS, M-, 75.- Euro This is a story of an unreleased record and a big mess up. The Elegants, a salt & pepper group from Tacoma, entered a studio in the mid sixties to record two soul covers - Jessie Hill's "Ohh Poo Pah Doo" and Hank Ballard's "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go". The pressing plant messed up the label and credited the recording to Larry Beck, the label then decided to print correct labels, but someone forgot to add the artist on the label after this double fuck up, the band decided to throw everything in the bin - nice try, good bye. In other words, this record was never officially released and someone found the remaining stock with both sides of the label prints (one side has the artist on it and the side featured hasn't). So, what you get is a mint copy of this hard knocking Jessie Hill cover and the prints of both sides of the label. soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/eleganstoohpoo.mp3 ELROY PEACE: New Day * JO JO, M-, 75.- Euro **** Last two copies available... I had 10 of these and 8 are already gone **** Super obscure 70's dancer here by an artist out of Los Angeles, the label was owned by Matt Furin, a local recordman, who ran 'Wig-Wag' records and 'Round U' along with "Jo Jo" and released local talents from all genres. Elroy shares the songwriting credits with Ricky Lance, another local L.A. singer, who recorded some highly indemand 45s for his own Bren label. This one is a regular spin for UK DJ Brett Franklin and it's pretty much under the radar for most collectors. Uptempo, soulful, with a hint of crazyness, due to the wicky-wacky-sounds on the intro, but surely taylormade for some dancefloor action. soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/elroypeacenewday.mp3 BROWN SUGAR: I'm Going Thru Changes Now / The Game Is Over (What's The Matter With You) * CAPITOL, promo, M-, archive stamp on one side of lbl, 60.- Euro, on hold Super clean promo copy of this massive 70's soul two-sider. The UK soul scene prefers "The Game Is Over", in my humble opinion "I'm Going Thru Changes Now" is the side to play. Anyway, two great sides, that come complete with their birth sleeve. soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/brownsugarimgoing.mp3 soundfile 2: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/brownsugarthegame.mp3 JEFF DALE: A Suffering Pain / Our Love Will Grow Strong * ATCO, promo, VG++, 60.- Euro In terms of soulfulness this record is hard to beat. Deep soul at it's very very best and and as a bonus you get an alluring flipside, that most folks overlooked for the sheer quality of the topside. Highly recomended! soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/jeffdaleasuffering.mp3 soundfile 2: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/jeffdaleourlovewill.mp3 CASH McCALL: More Power To You / I'll Always Love You * PS, VG-/G+, uptmepo side plays loud and proud! 50.- Euro Lots of light marks on this windy city rarity, but the uptempo side plays great! The ballad flip has more surface noise, but is still on the enjoyable side of things. Powerhouse, funky soul, that will have it's day sooner or later. A hard record to find, it took me ages to upgrade this. soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/cashmccallmorepower.mp3 soundfile 2: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/cashmccallillalways.mp3 RENALDO DOMINO: Let Me Come Within / I'm A Good Man * TWINIGHT, VG-, wol, 40.- Euro, on hold One of the best funk records out of Cgicago with a smashing Syl Johnson production. Flip is a hell of a good ballad. This copy is well loved and was quite obviously stored without a sleeve; many light scuffs, but nothing to distracting. The quiter flip has some more background noise, hence the price. soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/renaldoletmecome.mp3 soundfile 2: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/renalodimagood.mp3 HOLLAND-DOZIER: New Breed Kinda Woman / If You Don't Want To Be In My Life * INVICTUS; M-/VG++, 50.- Euro Great 70's dancer with two top sides to choose from. Flip has an unfeelable surface scuff, not affecting play at all. soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/hollanddoziernewbreed.mp3 soundfile 2: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/hollanddozierifyoudont.mp3 RISING LOVE: You Take My Heart Away * VENTURE, promo, VG++, residue from removed sticker on lbl flip, 50.- Euro Modern Soul dancer, that seems to be completely under the radar and it has this certain hands-in-the-air-quality. soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/risingloveyoutakemy.mp3 B.W. & THE NEXT EDITION: Work, Work, Work / Chosen One * DAKAR, M-, 50.- Euro The issue of this totally under the radar flying windy city double header is one of the hardest to find records on the Dakar label. Check popsike, only one copy has ever sold one ebay. The promo just offers "Chosen One" on both sides and you miss out on the great soulful funky edged "Work, Work, Work", which sounds perfect for today's scene. soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/bwworkwork.mp3 soundfile 2: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/bwchosenone.mp3 ERIC & THE VIKINGS: Vibrations (Made Us Fall In Love) / Get Of The Streets Ya'll * SOULHAWK, M-, 40.- Euro Great Popcorny Wylie penned and produced Detroit early 70's soul backed up by a super heavy funk instro. soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/ericandvibrations.mp3 soundfile 2: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/ericandgetoff.mp3 THE HESITATIONS: No Brag Just Fact * GWP, M-, sticker on lbl, 40.- Euro You're looking for this thing called funky edged soul? Don't look any further. An underplayed, smoking hot, no bullshit, dancefloor destroyer, that never fails to fill the floor. Great record, by any means and in my humble opinion, the better of the two GWP release by the Hesitations! soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/hesiationsnobrags.mp3 JEAN WELLS: What Have I Got To Lose * CALLA, M-, 40.- Euro, on hold Truly outstanding crossover dancer, that can only be described as a perfect soul record. Super clean copy here, don't sleep! soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/pacesettersside1.mp3 soundfile 2: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/pacesettersside2.mp3 THE PROJECTIONS: Groovin' To The Music We Play * BL&J, VG to VG-, lots of light marks, plays great! 40.- Euro Uptempo funky soul from 1976, that ticks all the boxes and sounds like it could go big one day. Check out the lenghthy break towards the end of the track. Great and hard to find record! soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/projectionsgroovin.mp3 MARLINA MARS: Head and Shoulders * MGM, promo, VG+, some ringwear on lbl, 40.- Euro Beauty pressed on vinyl. A piano riff leads you straight into a bouncy 60's dance beat and when Marlina's vocals drop in soul heaven lurks round the corner. Northern Soul at it's finest and a classic for good reasons. Vinyl has light marks only and plays like a dream. soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/marlinamarshead.mp3 VERNON GARRETT: If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time * MODERN VG+, wol, 40.- Euro Not many artists can look back on a career as long as Vernon Garret's impressive run of releases. Three decades of delivering hard edged soul and Blues with his first release dating back to 1961 for Imperial records and his last record released in 2002 for Evejim records in Los Angeles. This here is an iconic Northern Soul spin, uptempo, adrenalin fueled top class 60's dance soul. Whether you like this for a trip down memory lane (I've been to the Wigan Casino bla bla bla) or you just get caught by the raw soulfulness of this 1966 outing (or maybe both?), 60's dance soul doesn't get much better then this! soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/vernongarrettificouldturn.mp3 EDDIE PARKER: I Need A True Love * TRIPLE "B", M-, 35.- Euro Blasting, powerhouse Detroit Northern Soul written by Lorraine Chandler and Jack Ashford. Put the needle on the run-in groove, fasten your seat belt and get ready for a motorcity joyride of the highest order. soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/eddieparkerineedatrue.mp3 WILLY WILEY: Just Be Glad / Push And Shove * KING, M-, 35.- Euro Soulful crossover mover with that ever popular funky edge to it. Some call this superb record the poor man's Hamilton Movement for good reason. Flip it over for a hard knocking funk track. soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/willywileyjustbeglad.mp3 soundfile 2: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/willywileypushand.mp3 LORRAINE JOHNSON: Can I Hold You To It * ATLANTIC, promo, VG++, 30.- Euro A real soul masterpiece written by Sam Dees, J.J. One of the cornerstone records for the Muscle Shoals Sound and simply a perfect 70's dance record. Short hiss on the run in grooves, otherwise perfect playing record with superficial marks only. soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/georgesoulegetinvolved.mp3 THE COURTSHIP: Last Row, First Balcony / It's The Same Old Love * TAMLA; M-, 25.- Euro, on hold This usually sells for the musically brilliant sweet group side "It's The Same Old Love", but I actually prefer the overlooked dancer on the flip. Definitely an underplayed and undervalued record... soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/courrtshiplastnow.mp3 soundfile 2: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/courtshipitsthesame.mp3 BOBBY BLAND: Shoes * DUKE, weak VG, plays way above grade, wol, stamp on lbl, 25.- Euro I know, I should get tared and feathered for saying "fine for DJing", but this copy is exactly this. In fact, The Vandals started out as The Young Temptations and changed their name after a lawsuit form Berry Gordy. Anyway, brilliant sweet group soul outing recorded under the aegies of the Isley Brothers, extremly soulful and when the raw voiced singer drops in, you can't help but think of the Vanguards recordings for Lamp records. Lane's growling, insistent vocal styles, pretty much in the vein of Wilson Pickett, are even more prominent on the flip with a in-your-face slap of funky soul. Killer double header with two no-bullshit bangers back to back. soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/stacylaneimouttowin.mp3 soundfile 2: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/stacylaneafricantw.mp3 GREGORY WASHINGTON: Pamla Lamour * BRAINSTORM, M-, 25.- Euro Instant catchy "Tighten Up"-inspired instrumental out of the windy city. Despite the fact, that this is one of the finest slices of 70's soul, a Yugoslavian picture sleeve of this, is something, that I wouldn't have expected to be released in a socialist country. soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/alwilsonshowandtell.mp3 HANK BALLARD: You're So Sexy / Thrill On The Hill * KING, promo, wol, VG++, 20.- Euro Two hard hitting funky James productions to chose from on this shiny clean King promo. soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/hankballardyouresosexy.mp3 soundfile 2: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/hankballardthrill.mp3 MARVA WHITNEY: It's My Thing * KING, promo, VG+, 20.- Euro One of the funkiest 45s out there, with the Dapps laying down a super solid groove for the screaming, almost hysterical, vocals of Marva Whitney. soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/marvawhitneyitsmything.mp3 T.S.U. Check out the incredible break at 2:30! soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/aretharocksteady.mp3 DORIS ALLEN: A Shell Of A Woman * MINARET, M-, 15.- Euro This record is bursting with soul! One of these records to pull out, if you want to explain what deep soul is all about. I tip my stetson to Mrs Allen and her roughed, rugged vocal performance and so did dave Godin, who compiled this for Kent records many years ago. soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/dorisallenashellofa.mp3
