Popular Post Ljblanken Posted October 22, 2017 Popular Post Posted October 22, 2017 This great song "last bus from Tupelo" by Frankie Newsome is a story of a poor young man from the rural south who goes to the urban north to seek his fortune. Instead, he gets taken advantage of, used/abused there. Do folks know of any other songs from this lyrical genre? (poor rural blacks that get taken advantage of in cities like Detroit, Chicago, Cincinnati, etc). Thanks! 5
Guest Polyvelts Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 Really good idea for a thread ! Looking forward to seeing what comes up.
Guest Polyvelts Posted October 24, 2017 Posted October 24, 2017 Much covered song - but I really love this version !
Driveller Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 It was a (long) while before I realised Gladys Knight's 'Midnight Train To Georgia' was about this. Her man must have had a really shit time in the North to want to go back to Georgia during that period. 1
soulski Posted June 5, 2018 Posted June 5, 2018 Junior Walker & the All Stars version of Way Back Home is about nostalgia for the South, it's one of my favourite songs 1
