Martha & Vandellas – Quicksand – Gordy 7025 WD M- £30

Another fine example of Motown’s success with girl groups, Martha joined the original group and bounced into a string of hits including this 1963 release.  Wow! and X in light biro on the label, just one superficial line on the vinyl, absolutely no effect on play, so Plays M-

 

Four Tops – Without the one you love / Love has gone – Motown 1069 WD M- £40

My favourite Motown act, and yet another glorious double sider.  Top side is an infectious harmony laden dancer and the equally good flip, an aching beat ballad.  East coast map design, just light mottling or in a very small area of the top side label.

 

Velvelettes – These things will keep me loving you – Soul 35025 WD Ex+ £80

The group was brought to the attention of Berry Gordy by his nephew, a classmate of the girls.  Rich vocals, just so simple, perhaps demonstrating a subtle side to the writing talents of Harvey Fuqua and Johnny Bristol.  Date “66” and 3 XOL penned on label, same flip, with writing on label. Plays M-

 

Marvelettes – Danger heartbreak dead ahead – Tamla 54120 WD Ex+ £30

One of the classics released in a golden year of 65, I remember this one roaring out from the Good Morning Vietnam soundtrack, sounded fabulous on the big screen.  Plays M-, XOL and off-white ageing to the twin globe labels.

 

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell – California Soul – Tamla 54192 WD M- £25

RED vinyl copy, great version, so smoozy and enough to make an ice cream melt!  The sort of 45 that should be blaring out of open windows when you cruise down country back lanes in a VW camper, what a tune. Red marker ring around centre hold on same flip.
