Been reading through this thread and getting goose pimples and near to tears just reading the lyrics never mind with hearing them, two that spring to mind....Faye Crawford "What Have I Done", my ex sent me this on a tape when we split, cried me bloomin' eyes out  ,

Carl Hall "What's Come Over You", great singer Carl, pours his heart out here.

And then there's Jimmy Conwell on a more upbeat but no less heartfelt tune by The Exits " I'm So Glad", absolutely lovely......mmmm.

"That's the wonder......the wonder of you" Gut wrenching indeed, whether Port Vale win or lose.....always brings a tear to me ol' Stokie eyes... ;-)

(We won't mention Delilah here obviously......oooops!)

sorry for interfeering.

When you go through a day

And the things that people say

They make you feel so small

They make you feel that

Your heart will just never stop aching

And when you just cant accept the abuse you are taking

Darlin reach out for me

Dont you worry Ill see you through

You just have to reach out for me

Ill be there and Ill confort you

Oh yes I will

Comfort you and love you

How Im gonna love you

When good friends prove untrue

And the things they do to you

They make you feel so bad

They make you feel that

You havent a reason for living

So when you feel you

Could throw in the towel and just given in

Darlin reach out for me

To mese these kind of songs define soul music itself and set it apart from other forms of music.

Few can deliver a lyric of this type with more power, honesty, humanity and emotional intensity than Otis Clay. Check "You Hurt Me For The Last Time", "Tired Of Falling In And Out Of Love", "The Woman Doesn't Live Here Anymore", "Love Don't Love Nobody", "Pouring Water On A Drowning Man", "You're Gonna Hate Yourself In The Morning" (from the pen of the aforementioned Sam Dees), the immortal "That's How It Is" and my current favourite, "I Lost Someone" for stellar examples of his uncanny ability to translate others' lyrics of pain, regret and recrimination. Truly a spectacular exemplification of the consummate soul singer's art.

But my favourite example of this type of soul song is Denise LaSalle's "Trying To Forget About You". Words can't express how wonderful this record is, and the line on the fade where she sings "... and if I ever find myself crawling to your door again, I'm gonna stay right there, stay right there, until you let me in..." before breaking into what can only be described as an anguished howl is one of the greatest, truest parts in all recorded soul music. The lp version has a precious extra twenty or so seconds of the agony and is well worth seeking out.

=============

Absolutely love this record.

Can't not mention 'show and tell'........awesome.

the one that gets me is "dont leave me baby" by ray gant and the arabian knights, it starts off nice and slow then he comes in with "i cant stop crying" and from then on its lump in the throat stuff, almost the same with homer banks "sometimes it makes me wanna cry"

not original or different lyrics but they certainly hit the spot.

 is there a crying emoticon? Expressed perfectly. This is also the reason I don't like seeing live acts. I get too nervous for them & worry that they might be pinning their hopes on a career revival. How patronising am I?

Someone mentioned Clydie King, so I've got to add " If you were a man"

Plus (ooh I love a sad thread):Charlie Pride-"Don't tear me down" Big Maybelle "Lord what are you doing to me" and "Do not pass me by" and Esther Phillips " Home is where the hatred is"

Oh dear!

my alltime favorite female singer from her days with jonnie otis at 14 years old to her atlantic years.. just say goodbye, catch me ime falling.,.,.then she recorded the tune rthat must have turned her apart. imagine you have a habit with heroin(ok most of us cant i hope). keep sayin qutit. but did youy ever try sadly it beat her..

For me Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes "I Miss You" Part2 stands head and shoulders above all else.

Harolds on the phone making small talk to his ex while Teddys telling us all what he is really feeling deep down inside "I know you've found someone new and I just don't know what to do".

It's all too much for me!

STERWARDS ENQUIRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JUST BEEN LISTENING TO STEVIE'S LATELY

"Lately I've been staring in the mirror,

very slowly picking me apart.

Tryin' to tell myself I have no reason, with your heart.

Just the other night while you were sleeping,

I vaguely heard you whisper someone's name.

But when I ask you of the thoughts you're keeping,

you just say, nothing's changed. "

Take a listen to David Ruffin - especially at the midway change point of I don't know why I love you on the sounds page.

Wish he could have added some feeling and passion to the track wink.gif

So what other lyrics capture the sadness and poigniancy of lost love?

With respect to 'lost love', some of that general theme that still do me some damage inside, are:

Sea Shells - Quiet Home

Maxine Brown - Don't Leave Me Baby

Eddie Hughes - Soul Searcher

Psychodelic Frankie - Putting You Out Of My Life

Byrdie Green - Don't Make It Hurt

Out-Of-Sights - For the Rest of My Life

Chuck Holliday - Just Can't Trust Nobody

Linda Jones - What've I Done To Make You Mad

The Inticers - Since You Left

May have missed them earlier but what about:-

Eddie Whitehead - Just Your Fool

Tempests - I Don't Want To Lose Her

Johnny Gilliam - Roomful of Tears

James Brown - I Lost Someone

Chuck Jackson - What's With This Loneliness

All top tunes not played enough IMO.

Charles Perry - How Can I - Mutt & Jeff

insanely sad

Ann Byers - Happy Without You - Academy

shes kidding herself

Al Scott - What Happened To Yesterday - Genuine

'you said you'd always stand by me'

And theres an incredible record which is the flip of 'Mr. Romance' I think (is it Sonny Parker??) called 'What Can I Do' thats gut wrenching stuff.....

just thought of a few more before this thread drys up especially with all the tears shed so far.

Lonely man am I , ever since you said goodbye , girl I know that I should have woke up coz it seems now that we've broke up, your farewell kiss is haunting me ,my 2 lips cry out constantly, let your heart let your heart be your guide, forget about your foolish pride etc, etc, etc

Classic Temps - (Loneliness Made Me Realise) It's You That I Need

Darrell Banks - I'm The One Who Loves You

and who could forget the awesome

Volumes - Same Old Feeling with the words I sit in the corner and tears fill my eyes and also I cry to myself when nobodys there , classic tune, great lyrics.

one more to finish

J R Bailey - Love Won't Wear Off As The Years Wear On - SUPERB

Paul & Sue :yes:sad.gif

Not quite the same emotional impact as the Drifter Perhaps. However this little ditty, also by the late great Ray Pollard is a close second in terms of gut wrench worthiness imo.

Finally got myself a copy a few months back, hardly been off the turntable since, Wonderful tune, just love it

Just had a look at the video of him performing it at the 100 club, i bet that was some night, really envious here :(

Ah man, it was. Video doesn't really do his voice justice, he was fantastic.

I liberated the poster from that night, still got it somewhere. :shades:

Yeh I guessed the sound wasn't right, the music always tends to dominate if not recorded on proper studio equipment, but you could still tell his voice was still in fine working order.

If only we had thought of holding on to posters & the like in the 70's, could be worth a fortune by now.

Freddie Scott - Hey girl

Walter Jackson - Uphill climb to the bottom

Rainy Night in Georgia - david ruffin - motown unreleased lp hip o select cd

Great

Is this a fantastic version or is it not? never a fan of David as a person... but as a singer.... there is not many to touch him imo. I always thort Brook Benton done this to perfection till I heard david's rendition. The un-issued LP that this was from would have been seminal imo
