Guest bleusuperb Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Guy I work with, in his late thirties, has no idea what I am talking about whenever I mention Northern Soul. Is quite keen to hear some of the stuff I am always harping on about so has asked if I could do a c.d for him. Thing is I would like to include a broad range of tracks, dancers, mid tempo and a couple of the ballad types but all atypical northern. Which tracks would be among your first choices?.
Guest Lady Maverick Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Good question! I would include the Invitations WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME BABY, for one! Also, Jackie Wilson's SOUL GALORE!

Has to contain: Love Runs Out Willie Hutch (dancer) And In Return Sheila Ferguson (shuffler) Hurt So Bad Little Anthony & The Imperials (hairs on the back of your neck listener). This wouldn't be a bad start. KTF. Drew.
Jaco Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 (edited) No Northern intro compilation would be complete without the Steinways " You've been leading me on" amongst a zillion others! Edited November 14, 2006 by Jaco
John Siret Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 How about : IMPRESSIONS - You've Been Cheatin' CHUCK JACKSON - What's With This Loneliness MELBA MOORE - The Magic Touch BOBBY REED - The Time Is Right VOICES OF EAST HARLEM - Cashin' In
Guest Ferrett Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 I would suggest taking him to a venue instead of doing a tape. For those that know nothing about Rare Soul the only way they're really going to understand the tunes is to hear them LOUD and to a full dancefloor!! After all, that's how the music was designed to be heard. You'll also then be able to judge what he likes/dislikes and build the tape around that.
Jaco Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 You could do it as a "Dummys guide to Northern soul" type thing and perhaps give some examples as to how the scene has developed over the past 5 decades. For example : From the Wheel era You've been cheating - The Impressions At the discotheque - Chubby Checker Whats wrong with me baby - The Invitations From the Mecca period Queen of Fools - Barbara Mills Tainted love - Gloria Jones If you ever walked out of my life - Dena Barnes From Wigan Get out - Harold Melvin Send him back - Pointer Sisters I'm coming home in the morning - Lou Pride From Stafford & the 100 Club I love her so much it hurts - The Majestics Lady in green - The Magnetics I'd think it over - Sam Fletcher From Keele and others You should o' held on - 7th Floor Aviators Packing up - Damon Fox Lonely for you baby - Sam Dees From the Ritz and others Gonna be a big thing - The Yum Yum Too late - Mandrill Man o man - Walter and the Admirations From Cleethorpes and others He who picks a rose - Jimmy Ruffin It's your voodoo working - Charles Sheffield This thing called love - Johnny Wyatt If your mate didn't get a feel for Northern after listening to this lot, then I don't know what would! Agree that a club would give him as good an idea as to what it's all about though!
Guest rasfoz Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 i suggest the triumphs - im coming to your rescue , sidney joe quails - i dont do this (to every girl that i meet) , four tops - shake me wake me , maurice williams - being without you , the drifter - ray pollard ahh that should make a nice starting point
Guest Baz Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 I think the best thing is tunes with the WOW factor that you think will be precived to some one whos not into northern so forget oldies crossover modern newies ect, ect just give em summin to go yeah this is f***in ace, try to see past your own personal taste too if you see what i mean, give em summin to get their teeth into of course you would have to include summin like mello souls for a start

As advised in other posts, maybe better to take him to a dance friendly venue, (probably oldies based) and get him to nudge you when he likes something. Failing that make sure you include 'walk in my shoes' in the CD Emotion packed, lyrically superb, the right tempo, great intro, all topped with that magical voice..........it'd work for me

Do you mean ATYPICAL........most of the records listed above I would say are the usual suspects. I got into NS following on from my love of the Motown sound so it maybe a good idea to introduce him to some 60s TM first.

That's how I got initiated (SoulTrip 2006)!
