Guest Kolla Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Good explanation young Mikey.... ever thought about becoming a clap teacher
Soulsmith Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Now that we have the book 'Who The Hell Is Frank Wilson' all that remains is to publish 'How To Clap On The Off Beat' Surely its just a matter of time.
Guest in town Mikey Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Now that we have the book 'Who The Hell Is Frank Wilson' all that remains is to publish 'How To Clap On The Off Beat' Surely its just a matter of time. link Colin (It is colin isnt it?) My publisher wont give me the £1 million advance now. he recons you have applied for the copywright
Guest Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Ben Zine - Village Of Tears. AND Bernie Williams. That was the first track I thought of. At Yate not only did you get the three claps at the appropriate spot in the record, you would then imediately get an 'echo' three claps, and then everyone would clap once together. When you are 15, at your first allnighter, and watching/listening to all this, its impossible not to be sucked in. It is also a much under-rated dance move. As we are all getting less agile and the backdrops and swallow dives are becomming less and less (ahem) graceful, a good clap is a wonderful thing to do, or watch. link Spot on Mikey, didn't get down/up to Yate that often so not sure how often this happened but remember one night to Epitome of Sound ( I think)it seemed the "echo" claps just went on & on from different parts of the floor. Brilliant memories, Time machine please Thanks for backing me up on Tobi Legend Kolla thought it was just me ;-)
Paul R Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Everyone is talking about clapping to the beat or the off beat, but what about clapping to the invisible bits like in The Jewels "We Got Togetherness" or The Outsiders "Lonely Man". That took real skill!
Paulb Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Yeah Paul, ur far too young to be on this site if your mum went to Wigan. Go and do your homework...... link well i never! how rude! ill have you know my homework is done before tea and ALWAYS in on time!
Soulsmith Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Hi Mikey Yeah its me aka 'Col The Soul' May I say how much I recently enjoyed your amusing diatribes of late......
Guest in town Mikey Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 New Job. Absolutely f### all to do. Spend about 6 hours on here every day.
wendy Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 thanks I.T. Mikey. i look forward to seeing soul source members take their hands out of their pockets & revive this tradition
Billywhizz Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Jack Billy has his own way of expressing himself, he's a carrott cruncher from Norfolk so if you need a translator talk to Binty Crane link Thanks alot John, mind you 30 years of allnighters has probaly took its toll! Talking about Binty, I am not in her good books, hope you and Alison are keeping well.
John May Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Actually come to think of it it is quiet fun clapping at the wrong place in a song, cause when you clap other people copy, it's even funnier if you clap extremely vigorously to a slow track, or even carry on dancing in between tracks :good:
Winnie :-) Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 The Dome at its peak was good for clappers - Sunshine Girl developed a life of its own there. Also, I have a superb tape (copied from the late Paul Fisher) of a storming Butch set at the 100 Club about 5 years ago - superb hand clapping!! Particularly on his Jerry Williams c/u, Temptones c/u and his ender, Eddy Hughes "Soul Searcher" (then c/u as George Lemons). Not such a dead art in the South. ================ I'll agree that the 100 sometimes got a decent clap going, but it was very rare at the dome. Sunshine girl, was an exception, and perhaps the Allen Sisters, but in general it was a very quiet venue. IMO better clapping ooop north, mainly cos the records played were better known. Winnie :-)
Guest in town Mikey Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Winston, Its Mike from the ONS. Good to see you on here mate. Been transferred to Newport, so I wont be interrupting your xmas office party this year
Winnie :-) Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Hi Wendy. There are two types of clapping along. Both require Winston's large arm movements and thunderous bringing together of hands. Take 'Crying Over you - Duke Browner'. The opening bars are dramatic and there is a pause. This is where dancers clap. (bear with me 'duh duh, duh duh, CLAP') Or 'Epitome of sound - You dont love me' when there are three rapid beats, dancers clap to each beat. Sometimes the way is to clap on a beat, on other's its the missed beat. I think thats the one Kolla is refering to in 'Time will pass you by'. I have probably got that wrong and the old lads like Winston will take me to task. ============== Old lads....what a bloody cheek Personally I think the secret with clapping is to mean it, you can get away with anything if you're positive, and not all wishy washy. If Toby Legend hadn't reached such elevated status, the claps would probably have been different, the only reason it's difficult to master is there aren't a 1000 plus people clapping to it in unison anymore Winnie:-)
Reg Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Ah think with the clapping thing you've either got it or you haven't. I remember my mate Chris at Stafford clapped so loudly his hands REALLY bled..and he was in time even tho he was always on another planet. Records that springs to mind include Larry Houston.Let's spend some time together or Marva Hicks,Romance Watson any of those Stafford type tunes.. We all liked clappin then... to anything really. I still clap along in my car when I think nobody's looking
Paul McKay Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Used to get the odd bit of good clapping at TOS albeit by much smaller numbers, what a pity that it'll soon be no more. I can only make the last 1/2 hour of the last one due to DJing at Hidden Secrets mores the pity. Paul SITC
Little-stevie Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 no seriously - can someone please explain this hand clap thing. did yous clap to ALL the songs? did yous jump n spin n clap at the same time??? link Yes and with a cig in the mouth it looked very classy...Great to see you Dublin soul girl..All the best...
Winnie :-) Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Spot on Mikey, didn't get down/up to Yate that often so not sure how often this happened but remember one night to Epitome of Sound ( I think)it seemed the "echo" claps just went on & on from different parts of the floor. Even the most inept of clappers get this one right Winnie:-)

Regards - Mark Bicknell.
TheBigO Posted December 2, 2004 Posted December 2, 2004 (edited) I find that it doesn't matter what record I end with, it always get a huge amount of clapping going, and cheering as well, strangely just as I am finishing and walking off the stage?!? Hang on a minute.... Edited December 2, 2004 by TheBigO
Daved Posted December 2, 2004 Posted December 2, 2004 There's great clap a long moments during the instrumental breaks of Jackie Wilson "Because Of You" & carla Thomas "I'll Never Stop Loving You". When I first got into the music, I used clap to "Sliced tomatoes", "Fortune Teller", "Ghost In My House" & "The Right Track" ....would probably seem a bit naff now.

Guest in town Mikey Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 I knew I would track this thread down. Speaking to a guy from Torquay over the Xmas period who used to go to Yate. He reckons he can remember me saying I didnt like Stafford as much as Yate one night, because people hardly ever clapped, (I assume it was because most of the records were unknown) and therefore the atmosphere was crap. My opinions obviously changed over time, as its still my fave allnighter, and I only missed about 3, so I couldnt have been put off that much. Happy new year everyone. I'm back at work, so will probably be boring people to death daily again
Pete S Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Going back to the first post of this thread - that is definitely from the last night at Wigan. The whole tape is as mad as that. Bought a tear to my eye listening to that again
