Birds Of Harmony

The Birds Of Harmony

GREG BELSON says “Just over an hour left on John’s latest auctions, featuring the modern soul rarity by the Birds of Harmony on ILM. Big tune, tough pull….and an obscure club banger of the highest order! An infectious Sweet Soul Harmony Boogie groove, from the streets of Baltimore! RARE as…

John says.. An enthusiastic Charm City gathering deliver an uplifting hand-clap saturated Gospel infused dancer ,enriched by full team of silky harmony vocals.

An addictive dancer with several alternate lead voices taking their turn, as the backing rises up into their Gospel roots. (which the flipside ballad confirms)

That groundbreaking much-loved Globetrotting DJ Greg Belson has set the bar high for this style, that’s not only a tough challenge to find but also sweeping the clubs all over the planet as Jocks respectfully follow Greg’s example.

This copy has super clean vinyl, tiny X on label is it’s only blemish…

Joy Lovejoy

In Orbit ( Promo )

You are viewing one the RAREST Northern Soul classic PROMO’s it is possible to own.. we are not ashamed to admit this is our first copy in memory!

In our own experience, rarer than “Landslide” “Please Let Me in” “The Way You’ve Been Acting Lately” “Love You Baby” “Stubborn Heart” or any other Northern Soul time-served classic you care to mention. Only “Gwen Owens” Velgo white Demo is rarer.

Why this anomaly occurred is hard to answer, but believe it or not this is the very “first” Joy Lovejoy I’ve found in the USA, stock or promo! As all the stock copies seemed to have been dumped in Europe at the very end of the 60’s.

It rose from that import supply to become a much-loved Northen Soul anthem, one of the label’s failed attempts to harness the “Motown Sound” hoping to trigger chart-success with the “In” dance sound of the moment. The only “hit” it achieved was monstrous adulation from the congregation frequenting the British Soul clubs of the 70’s.

Since then, its popularity has bloomed into one of the dance-floor “certs” to get the night off to a banging start..

If you’re serious about owning the very rarest forms of the true NS “classics”, this baby was a jaw-dropping, heart-stopper when it popped up after decades in hiding, on a recent dig..

Condition is just as breathtaking…as the label vista !

Ambassadors

Bear With Me / I Need Someone

Delicious!! Vocal group harmony Northern Soul offering not one but two delights for those of you who warm to highly honed vocal that seamlessly fuse into a simplistic dance groove - this is a Sunday stroller of the highest quality!

Which has made it a Carib Soul want both sides of the Atlantic..

Flip it over to a be ran-over by a much heftier Northern Soul screamer, urgent dancer again displaying tightly knitted vocals, this time rising to a rattling dance arrangement with a screaming lead being smoothed over by relentless arrhs and oohs, then the teammates come through with weighted choruses, lifting the session another notch.

Producers Edward Wright & Harry Hanson again deliver a superior Northern Soul sound as they did with Delettes, O’Jays etc. Not a well-know producing duo, but a pairing that consistently turn out superior harmonious Northern Soul.

This is the very scarce STOCK copy, with Northern Soul seeping from every note, no matter which side you choose to play..

Rex Garvin & The Mighty Cravers

You Don't Need No Help( Uyou Can Socl Part 1 & 2

So rarely comers to market .. the authentic original vinyl press.

The “Sock It To ‘Em J B” team of Clayton Dunn, Holman & Rex himself are “sockin’” it at’cha again, as they conjure up another compelling dance session that simultaneously shuddered the foundations of Wigan Casino & Cleethorpes Pier as Walter Synder’s lone 100 count box fed the DJ boxes around the country circa 1978.

Since that time this 45 has been most elusive with very few being found, as this failed to impact in New York, unlike their earlier recordings..

It’s current new century rarity is underlined with few “original” label scans being posted by the world of record collecting on the web.

A funkier stance than their previous “hit” releases and fitting perfectly into the Cleethorpes late 70’s itinerary and perfect for today as that meatier edge Northern Soul is once again the flavour to get ‘em up dancing..

Like meeting an old friend, this rarity is back … long time no see

Flamma Sherman

Where Is He

Rare and flawless 1969 British Demo! Of this unusual but very well received Northern Soul spin from the outside-the-box thinking of the such inspirational DJ’s as the late Nev Wherry, who almost on a weekly basis would pull in a turntable gaggle of enthusiasts jostling for position, their heads in synchronised rotation following some weird and wonderful British Demo around the decks, trying to read the title.

This was one of the most “off-the-wall” spins ever dropped at Cleethorpes Winter Gardens by Liberiera’s answer to the “Von Trap’s”? 4 teenage sisters taking their family name as their moniker and fooling all us young novices into thinking this was a single artist recording.

From the moment the vocals sweep in, it is obvious that this is a girl-group but one of really intreging origins, apparently 4 daughters of an ambassador based in Britain..well I never knew that fact, as Nev wafted another rare find under my nose.

This enlightening choice grew into a dance floor favourite, drawing synchronised hand-clapping, spins and all the usual NS peacocking an accepted tune would garner. Spreading south to St. Ives all nighters, the search of the local vinyl-hideaways was on.

Very few copies ever surfaced, and the song became dormant as Northern Soul went into its now well documented hibernation in the early 80’s; with only Stafford’s Top Of The World club and MOD revival keeping the rare Soul scene in a now dimming spotlight.

Flamma Sherman stands as a statement to those youngsters on a never ending quest to own and play 45s nobody else had or even heard of. When it came to the obscurist British 60s releases nobody did it better or more often than than the ledgendary Nev Wherry (who would have rubbed his hands in delight at the condition of this gorgeous pinky)

Torch All Nighter Poster

The Torch!

A Metre of Magical Memories - Northern Soul art on a different level.

Forget every piece of Northern Soul memorabilia that has ever been offered for sale in the past, here is a lovingly “lifted” original poster from the walls of the the Tunstall-Temple itself, in 1972.

Nothing but nothing, gets anywhere near to the importance of this HUGE 39 inches by 27.5 inches authentic original Torch Poster. Insanely rare (we only know of two in existence) the other will never come to market.

Featuring Keith Minshall + his Kingspinners and the “Drifters” live!

The “Torch” of course was the most influential all-night Northern Soul club ever. Whilst Northern Soul hung on to it’s underground scene status, this club was the driving force behind breaking more timeless NS classics than any other..

Today the scenes mantras of “Torch Classic” “Torch Anthem” adds more kudos to a 45 than any other phrase…No Lenny Gamble’s, Lorraine Silver’s or the like played here. The Torch DJ’s were responsible for bringing the very finest of obscure non-hit USA Soul dance 45’s to the English teenager, setting the root system and the benchmark for all newcomers to follow.

This authentic “Torch” poster is the most important historic piece of memorabilia a Northern Soul disciple could ever wish to have hanging pride of place in his man cave..

…we seriously doubt we shall have another for sale ever again… a unique window of opportunity for spectacular NS memorabilia to treasure..

Robert Thomas

Salvation

Margaret Thatcher once famously told the Houses Of Parliament “You Can’t Buck The Market”

Has proven year on year for the past 50 years by the Northern Soul collectors market, driven by the force and desires of an estimated 100,000+ vinyl collectors. So when those foot in the mouth comments flood the Soul media;

“It’s not worth anything like that!”, “It’s Not Even Rare” or the famous “I had a copy and sold it for £5” …

those comments over the history of Northern Soul have been applied to the likes of, Frank Beverley - Sassy, Epitome Of Sound, Gerri Hall - Hot Line, Maurice Williams - Deesu, Doni Burdick - Bari Track..etc etc.. NONE of these multiple finds affected the long-term value in the slightest. In fact these records today are in some cases worth over 100x more than they were initially sold for.

It seems few on this vibrant scene fully realize just how heavily populated with collectors it really is..So when multiples briefly turn up it does not mean a jot, when potentially 100,000 worldwide buyers are out there, eager and waiting..

Margaret Thatcher were you a secret rare record buyer? Because you’re insight into the buying and swelling markets was truly visionary…

Robert Thomas is currently enjoying unprecedented popularity with a guesstimate of 1000’s of collectors longing for ownership..Northern Soul dancefloor crammers always spark that effect, so where does the value stop? When so many are clambering for ownership. ‘“You Can’t Buck The Market” especially when the buyers outstrip supply by 10000 fold..

Today Robert Thomas stands as a testament of just how the “Supply vs Demand” factor triggers colossal swings in record values, especially when a scene is so heavily colonized..

Now click the soundfile that instantly generates that so sought after “Dance Floor Rush” effect.

Two flawless labels, strong clean play-perfect vinyl, the OCD collector, will need to be aware previous owner name & initials in deadwax..

Joe Hinton

Funny ( How Time Slips Away )

You are looking at perhaps the rarest SOUL album ever issued in the UK and this copy is pristine!

Only Sam Cooke could challenge Joe Hinton for the crown of Soul balladeer of the 60’s. A Texas crooner with a consummate approach to his songs that made him stand head and shoulders above the competition.

This is a listing for the British collecting Soul connoisseur who appreciates extreme rarity, impossible condition and the art as well as this great man’s music.

Again, we are not ashamed to state this is the ONLY copy we have had for sale in near 50 years of digging, dealing, collecting, relentless hunting for vinyl across the breadth of England.

The USA Back Beat counterpart is so very hard to acquire, this British press we’d tag as an album “impossible”, certainly in this time-machine condition!

Texas Deep Soul at it’s silkiest - listen to a Soul crooner at the very top of his game.. the sample soundfile we’ve lifted just says it all…

Suzanne Goddard

Anything Can Happen / It's Too Bad

The record that launched a fabled label full of great collectible releases, including killer 60’s garage some achieving huge money if and when they ever surface.

So you just gotta check out this MOD-GIRL screamer that started it all… A hybrid of the girl-sound peppered with “Garage” moment of defiance that make it such a cool MOD tune..

Everything released on this Florida independent label is RARE and defiant, this sweet voiced lady gets guided by Stuart Hemingway into the edgy recording that Eric Schabacker envisaged when he wrote both sides..

The fusion of the mid-60’s girl sound that itself itself from twee sweetness to a mighty honkin’ horn dancer makes this rarity a really cool tune with serious potency..

Flip it over and Suzanne is caught in a web of searing guitars and male vocal group back-up. A real Girl/Garage screamer “I Wish You Were Dead!” underlining the writer/producers penchant for a defiant tune.. the late guitar break is spectacular.. and is probably the best of the two sides..

RARE & flawless and the springboard for a label that offers the serious collector of 60’s indies so much to chase..

Hot Tamales

Chicken - Backs

Have some Boo-Ga-Loo! - Have Some Funk!

A wonderful 60’s blend of the two genres, coming out of Springfield, Massachusetts. Same guys who did “Love’s Intentions” on misleadingly named Detroit label.

The Hot Tamales were obviously highly accomplished musicians, highlighted on this 45 as the team ratchet up the dance sound. A demonstrative lead singer nailing his lyrics with varying levels snarls, screams & growls..

prompted by an extrovert Saxophonist, who by the end is mimicking a Rooster as his insane solo careers off the scale..guitarist was not gonna be out-done, tricky plectrum skills applied and that brazen Sax-man jumps back in..

This is superior D.I.Y. private 60’s dance, that seldom surfaces, and if it does it is never experienced in this FLAWLESS condition. Mint 0- vinyls and perfect “Rite Sound” labels.

TUNE!!!

Lee Moses

Bad Girl Part 1 & 2

The original version of a truly great song that Herman Hitson also covered, after Lee Moses, Herman is perhaps the only Soul singer who could have down it justice… as both have that gift of a expressive rasping vocal that stays in tune..

WOW! this 45 carries a punch! A record to make you sit up and take to to the floor, it’s immense power of both the production and the voice does not allow you to rest and just listen. A relentless brass-barrage, crashing drums from Johnny Brantley & team, is the ideal vehicle for that outrageously magnificent voice to ride in..

This is just a brilliant tune that for some unbelievable reason has yet to drive into the heart of the Northern Soul.. but it will..

This copy is flawless, previously unplayed!

In short this masterpiece sits comfortably in the Top Ten greatest ever Northern Soul 45’s ever made..

As a white promo it is of course a NS classic collectors Grail… in flawless condition is a Holy Grail

I think it's safe to assume that there are more collectors today than there has ever been.

Unless dealers are 'hogging ' vinyl to create rarity of course!

Like many others, I wish I had kept hold of my records....but then again, its better they get played to a crowd than sitting on a shelf.

Well if I owned that Birds of Harmony record I would have PAID someone £464.00 to take it off my hands.

I'm just listening and reading the descriptions and wondering if I am reading about the same record I am listening to.  Distinctly average.

It was interesting that Robert Thomas sold for a similar amount that you often see it as a Set Sale price and didn't disappear off "in orbit" !

p.s. - It had never occurred to me that the "In Orbit" demo was so rare.

I sold my 'In Orbit' demo to a friend for 50p - It went to a good home :D

The Birds of Harmony certainly isn't for the Normans.....the reactions here are exactly what I would have expected from the Soul Source gliteratti....a record that always stimulates interest whenever I play it, so I could sell it several times over for you at probably the same kinda price......if, of course, you would be 'unfortunate' enough to stumble on a copy.

Soul Source glitteratti and normans...you like your cliches don't you.  My collecting habits are far from restricted to the Northern, far from it, as are those of NCFC so to calass us as Normans is bit wide of the mark.  It doesn't stimulate my interest I am afraid and can't see the appeal of it.

S'alreet, Chalky...I'm just tapping away on a keyboard, not addressing anyone in particular.....it's OK, I knew it wouldn't appeal to folks on here....nowt to be 'afraid' about it either. It's one 45....that's it. People dance to it.....people don't. Like most records. On to the next tune. ;)
