I must have had at least 5 or 6 copies of it over the last 3or 4 years sold them all for between £50 to £75 last one last year (£75)there must be 100s even 1000s out there

so how does it become a £300+ record !!!!!!!!!!

I got mine from big al from Bromsgrove at rugby,  about ten years back they where a fiver so he bought me one as well. The lad had half a dozen of them .It was always just bubbling under the radar played a lot at Nuneaton has become a peeps favourite tune . Never thought it would go up much in price but 300 quid im shocked that its gone to such dizzying heights .

Bought my copy about '81/82 for £2 less 10% discount. Still in the sleeve I bought it in. Used to play it around Urmston/Stretford then. Didn't get a lot of response at the time so stopped playing it but still kept it.

What I also meant to say is that I don't think it's worth the £300+ that people are asking for it (I pressed send too early, had my mobile, land line going and some non-entity banging on the door)

Seller's market if you can find a buyer sold mine about 91  for a score  some German bloke was mad for it  wonder if he's still got it ?

discogs doesnt mean anything regarding value, its the easiest thing to do is list an item on there and put any price you want, then others follow suit!

i bet if you chuck a copie here on soul source at 150 quid you probably wont sell it

Pretty sure mine came out of a "soul pack" in the 70s (one of soul bowls i think)

Same as, well nearly , think mine was a soul pack from contempo record's oxford st  probably  10 for  a fiver   crazy world?  🎶🎶🎶

As always, supply and demand collide to determine the market price. Supply is finite in this case, and most copies are probably in collections to stay. Demand is infinite and those wanting a copy in M- or Excellent condition will pay more. What we are seeing is Wannabe DJ's bagging the latest hotbox-sound... if they want to pay a premium to own the record, that's fine by me. Many 'bread and butter' tracks from decades ago are likely to be resurrected in the years ahead, especially any spun at Wigan

Discogs is very good actually if there is a history, you can see when and how much discs were sold for. There is more to discogs than the current listed price. Take out the extremes and you get a good idea, usualy the brit dealers who are the extremes too.  Below btw is the sales history of this disc on discogs, there is a few extremes too.....

Paid £12 for mine six years ago. A bit expensive at the time.

Yes you were ripped off there mate, mine cost me a fiver around the same time!

As has been mentioned someone had hundreds of mint copies and was knocking them out week after week on eBay fetching maybe a tenner on average?

Sums up the sad state of record collecting at the moment for mere mortals with a modest budget

Can"t lay my hands on mine at the moment but its an off white label with green text. Bought in the late 70s, is it kosher ?

Cheers Paul

If it's release number is C-103 it's a reissue.  The first issue is Yellow label with Green text, like the one pictured above.

Funny thing is, the reissue could be rarer than the original!!

But supply is there it would seem as there has been a copy for sale online every week practically for quite some time.  Wants for it are answered.  It is a vastly distorted market for certain items.  Everything about this record suggests it should be relatively cheap yet it is taken out of the reach of ordinary collectors because of greedy wannabe djs who seem to have little knowledge or knowledge magination and simply follow trends rather than influence trends. It has to be them as this is far from rare, it is around in large quantity and I would imagine all collectors who want this have it or will not even bother at today's prices. Some people should just sit down and learn something about the market before parting with these daft sums.

Couldn't agree with you more Chalkie. The vast sums involved are tempting collectors to cash in. Maybe the distorted market will be shortlived - the record ultimately will be spun to death, dropped from playlists and the price will tumble.

I would think so as well, if it wasn't for Wade Flemons and Jeanette!  It's gone from nothing and plenty of copies, to a monster and stayed there!

Thanks for that, but I read in Mr Manships book that the re-issue was pink. Mine is not pink more off/dirty white. I will try to find it and check the numbers and maybe post a pic

Cheers Paul

For Jeanette, it's still first time around, admittedly for over a decade or so now, and as a quality tune, the bar has just got higher and higher. On the other hand, it's second time around for Salvation as this was popular in the '70's. Other recent reactivations show similar price inflation such as Turley Richards, Ronnie Forte, Barbara Lynn etc. I think there's heaps more collectors all wanting the good sounds, particularly if they intend to DJ. Tragedy is, there's not enough original vinyl out there to satisfy everyones' cravings. A few three-figure records have lost their value but most have held up or increased, some staggeringly so.

:hatsoff2:HI ALL....£300 MMMmmm, HOWEVER Robert Thomas SALVATION is one of my all time favourites since the first time I heard it at Wigan Casino November 1973, it went big in 74 for a few weeks, & I was lucky to get a copy for £2, so it was far from cheap, in 75 John Anderson @ Soul Bowl had a few copies, then it just vanished from playlists for many years,(like so many classics on the scene) now it has got an unreal price tag, as said, my boy Taffy had 700 so the record ain't that rare £15 would be my price for a copy (true value).  Funny thing Mick Smith has always associated myself with Robert Thomas Salvation. there is a boot instrumental of salvation & also a nasty girl version BUTCH use to play???? KTF DAVE K

That nasty girl version is Cresa Watson/Rita Lee.  Was reissued later for the scene and the instrumental is original as far as I am aware, Men from Macon.

Apparently there are copies of "The Men From Macon" on Yellow & Green titled "SALVATION"

I have seen one on YouTube. Never been able to find a copy though.

Took me years to find this variation.

If it was YouTube may be it was a doctored label?
