And just wondering - have they added a drum machine over the track to emphasise the 4/4 beat, or is it a remixed version?

It's the solo version by Frankie Valli - Only ever seen it on Australian Tamla Motown from 1975 (The normal version starts with the Four Seasons (or three of them) singing the opening lines, whereas this is purely Frankie Valli singing right from the opening "Beware".

Thanks for that, Mick. Much appreciated.

Looks like Huggy Bear, Bootsy Collins and Wigan's Ovation got together to do a clothing line for My Little Pony.

I was thinking more like George Clinton & Lee Scratch Perry got together to design new Ronald McDonald costumes?

At the end of 'the night' the dj says "it doesn't get any more soulful than that" - he must have a rather small collection then (perhaps kept in that little bag with the lizard on top)....

Forget the guy in the check trousers, Mrs B wants to know who the lady in the blue dress is dancing with her handbag over her shoulder? Doesn't she trust her fellow soulie?🤔

Funny thing back in the seventies there were not many black people at soul clubs as I recall . I asked one of my black mates why he said the music was old fashioned and just simply did not appeal , which contradicts Jazzy Bs account of us all being racist .

Posted

What they've done is use inspiration from a few things and pulled it together - so there is something from Africa I think combined with Northern Soul - it's not strictly a Northern Soul influenced thing. The clothes and production of it all does seem more Soul Train than Northern but it still looks fun and vibrant, good music etc. I doubt anyone is going to be so affected by it that they turn up dressed like that to an all nighter haha

It's not like anything else I think that's their idea? Fashion draws from cultures old and new to make something unique or that's the idea?

On another note, The Night is a massive tune in Birmingham, instant floor-filler but I've noticed it's not so big elsewhere (North or South), I wonder why that is?

I can't tell whether that's tounge in cheek, but The night is a classic northern track anywhere and everywhere it's been played for well over 30 years, it was a school club disco record when I grew up in Birmingham...

Regards the ad, I get it, but seems a bit obvious for my taste, but then I'm not the target audience....  either way it's a bit of fun innit....

No it's not tongue in cheek haha

Just when I've been outside of Brum and heard it play it's not been as much of a dance-floor filler although obviously it's a really well known song I just wondered if there was any reason or if it's just random :)

Posted

The Night only became really well known after it was plucked from relative obscurity, played at Wigan and other "northern" clubs. It was then re issued and hit the charts. Just saying!

More soul in Morning town ride by the new seekers overplayed overstated record if there ever was one just doesn't sound even slightly soulful to me, just a bland pop record,

Dont recall Jazzy B saying we were racist, just mainly white, I believe it was more to do with the scene being made up largely of suburbanites. There was 2 black kids in my town when I was growing up,

Because it's Northern Pop! Simples... Lowest common demominator stuff. Squeezes into the Top 500 at number 499. Packs the floor at weddings for nostalgic 55 year olds. Made it's mark back in the day and has earned the right to be classed as Northern - that said, it hardly enhances it's status in this context.

Just how many records could you say the same thing about? If it was northern soul back then, it is still northern soul now.

Absolutely love it, and just goes to show how good the music really is! As for who ( young or old black or white)  are dancing and what they are wearing,?  does it matter!  Having a great time, expressing your individuality and showing your emotion will do for ME! We really do get hung up on these things! Each to their own.

I like the DJ getting it down on the dance floor.

That should be mandatory at all events.

Fab tune that's a HUGE part of the history of the scene and the reason so many still love the Music  40+ years later. It's not the records fault it gets murdered every week by lazy clueless  DJ's.

As for not being "Soulful", you could apply that to countless huge Northern tracks down the years. Records have always been chosen more for their Dance Floor appeal than any perceived 'Soulful' content..... I think that's why it's called 'Northern' Soul.

I agree, gets played whenever I'm out, which is often nowadays; I thought the N Soul snobbery had started to go away, looks like 'nope', maybe if we wait 10 years

This is a real head scratcher. First, the advert teases us up the stairs inside The Casino. The dance scenes have been choreographed in the way they were on the 'Northern Soul' film. The dancers know what they are doing and seem to be a mixture of Europeans and Americans drawn from a selection of soul scenes. So, there are some Northern dance movers, a few funksters, a couple of break-dancers and some acrobats. The Night is really a pop tune best filed next to The Snake, rather than a serious Northern dance track but some will quibble with that as it was played at some awesome venue... Personally, I liked the show but I would not be seen in Gucky clothes even if they were giving them away.

Anyone know any of the dance crew?

Wigan Young Souls ?

Maybe... Some of the Old Wigan Souls will relate to climbing the hallowed stairs, heading for the double-door then being socked in the face by heat and sound. I think plenty of us still endure the queueing to sample the 'blast' you experience going through that last door. I think the advert got that bit spot on.

I contacted the son of Duke Browner today about the Gucci promo ...... I've tried to talk to him for a number of years about collecting royalties but he does not seem interested. he is very polite but that's as far as it goes.

he said he has no 45s and no master tapes

I will keep on trying to touch base with him if only to see that Duke's wife gets some money

Andy

Its a shame that Duke couldn't or wouldn't grasp what he meant to the UK soul fraternity, just glad I met him RIP your music was amazing and my life was that much better for that as was so many people here across the pond

Can somebody please do a mash up of Sarah C's live version with the Gucci dancers. :):):)

Apologies if it has some reaching for their valium. But what a talented and wonderful lady!! This bit of film brings a big broad smile to my face every time I see it.

As much as I also cherish the nostalgia…and respect the views here…Has everything become so sacred that a simple NS Pastiche is getting most of us hot-under-the collar? Being chased around ‘Stolen from Ivor’ in the M/CR Arndale on a Saturday afternoon before kick-off was what did that for me.

The clothes are beautiful but much more aligned to Black US late 70's and disco which is really the way they should have run this campaign.

I was actually offered the gig but my days of getting commercial cash from soul are long behind me. I've had my share.

Like someone else said, Peter Werth vs did the same thing years ago.

People will always want to jump on the bandwagon of something which is historically inspirational.

We should thank ourselves lucky that this thing we're part of still has the power to be referential in modern society.

Guessing you had to grow up in smoke filled WMC's listening to wannabee Shirley Bassey's to order to appreciate that caterwauling ...

Always had a soft spot for FV from back in the day when I started out . But I know what you mean as I'm the same with the Snake, and even more so these days with Ruby Andrews which has for me come to represent the Pensioners Disco's and over 50's Singles nights that are the Northern Soul scene of Today, indeed pretty much everything I joined the scene to get away from in the first place. :(

However it's hardly Ruby's fault that her little ditty get's battered every week by the Clueless lot behind the decks just because 'Hey- it fills the floor'.
