The 20th century was fucking cool wasn't it? I think that it's ok to say it now, without appearing conservative, retro or the worst: nostalgic!
One thing's for sure: we're in a different era now; and whatever we may have lost or gained, it's modern enough for anyone; no need any more to obsess over innovation and change for its own sake... maybe there never was. Maybe music only ever needed to be good, and not achingly contemporary. After all, things change whether we force them to or not.
One certain advantage of following up an era of incredible creativity with one of incredible technology, is that the latter provides us with the tools to investigate the former; and as the wonders of 20th century music continue to unfurl before us, the modern music-lover with any sense abandons all notions of modernity and wades into the timeless stew.
No sooner had that century drawn to a close, than Will Holland and his Quantic operations set about cherry-picking its funkiest moments. No effort was made to be either retro or modern, and out of the timeless music of the past, came timeless music of the present.
An example of timeless music, if ever there was one, is a relatively obscure 45 by Ohio soul singer, Marion Black, titled 'who Knows'. Recorded in 1970, but not particularly sounding like it, it's an unusual, melancholy and compelling blend of rhythm & blues, soul and folk that's had the attention of soul and funk enthusiasts since the 90s.
With typical disregard for the boundaries of culture, genre or era, the Quantic Soul Orchestra, the largest and livest of Holland's projects, included a version of the track on their Tropidelico LP, recorded in Panama with veteran sound engineer, Eduardo Balito Chan, the legendary Peruvian pianist Alfredo Linares and Ernie King - 'Kabir' - on vocals.
No contrived attempt is made to modernise the song, thank fuck; the QSO just do as they do best and make it relevant to our era, but not depressingly so! They retain the soul of the song, but add some indefinable badass attitude.
Featuring both the 4:45 LP version and a more concise club edit by Luis Soulful, this great soulful version finally appears on a 45, where it belongs.
