Soulfulsolutions Posted April 24, 2017 Posted April 24, 2017 Irma & Fascinators – Just a feeling / Lost love – Scepter 12100 WD M- £80 This iteration of the Larks as a group of performing artists presents an intriguing history, which demonstrated that time waits for no one. What is very evident is the wonderful level of personal resilience that the trio of Philadelphian Soul stalwarts that kept this nearly successful recording group in existence for roughly 15 years. The main players, Calvin Nichols, Bill Oxendine and Weldon McDougal had always been the driving force and constant feature for a group that changed lead singer for literally each separate label release. Even then, the names and labels associated with their catalogue are synonymous with the word CLASS; lead singers - Jackie Marshall, Joe Hunter, Barbara Mason and the late Vivian McDougal; labels - Sheryl, Guyden, Arock, and Tower, all of which grace the Northern scene, the latter hosted the Four Larks of course. Out in front of the Larks for the 1963 release of the popular “Without you baby” on Priority Records (latterly released nationally on Fairmount) was Irma Jackson, a college student and friend of McDougal. 2 years later she was leading on this fabulous Scepter double sider, reputedly mastered at the 1963 session for the Priority release. Whilst the Larks had become the Fascinators for this solitary 45, Irma spun the magic with 2 contrasting vocals, “Lost Love” with a strict intensity and “Just a feeling” a traditional happy go lucky girly feel. Combined with "Without you baby" we just start to glimpse a stunning recording talent that like so many disappeared, a real loss, but let's not forget the quality backing from that fantastic all male backing group who did stand the test of time. The 45 is in great condition and a M- example for your collection.
