Northern Soul Uk Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 (edited) Just picked this up of Fleabay. Only ever came out on an album 'My kind of soul' Never a single release. Nice track too, but there is only 1 clip of it anywhere that I can see, and that's a live performance on Youtube. It's an official RCA Victor 7" acetate Picked it up for £14 + P&P from the states. When it comes through I will record it and put a full version on Youtube. If anyone knows better about it's release other than the album, please let me know. Thanks Edited March 28, 2017 by Northern Soul UK
Woodbutcher Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 Can see why it was never released as a single ...
Daved Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I'm no Len Barry expert but it doesn't really sound like him.
Northern Soul Uk Posted March 28, 2017 Author Posted March 28, 2017 (edited) Well like it or not, it's an official Len Berry record as on the LP 'My kind of soul', and a lot better than some of the tosh that gets played on the scene, i.e. Helen Shapiro and the like, that got to Number 1 in the UK charts, Northern Soul, Nah, at least Len Barry has some decent form. Roburt Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I have no actual knowledge of it escaping on a 7" rekkid ... HOWEVER ... quite a few countries (France, Brazil, Argentina, etc.) were in the habit of putting out more EP's (4 trackers) then singles and lots of these EP's would include tracks that were LP only in the US / UK. I know Len Barry had at least 3 EP's out in France but to the best of my knowledge these all featured his Decca cuts. Maybe, an EP of his RCA stuff escaped in Brazil.
Northern Soul Uk Posted March 28, 2017 Author Posted March 28, 2017 Thanks Roburt, yes looked at the EPs but can't see it on any of them. Bit like 'Music for pleasure' albums, always seemed to have an unreleased track on them.

Somebody is playing Helen Shapiro? Tell me what he said or walking back to happiness? There has never been anything ruled in or out as far as what's acceptable, because we can never agree on where the limits are! Once heard Willy Bully at a self proclaimed soul only event....so I guess my idea of soul and the dj promoter who played it are a million miles apart! Ed 1
Northern Soul Uk Posted March 28, 2017 Author Posted March 28, 2017 Hi Tomagoes, Wully Bully was played at the central in Leeds a few months ago, but only because the tune was played there back in the early 70s when the Central was a predominantly Mod club, and before Northern soul was called Northern soul
Tomangoes Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 As I said, one man's northern soul is another man's pop tune, or ska, or reggae, or funk etc. Loved wully Bully as an 11 year old at the youthy along with israelites etc. BUT it's never been my Northern Soul. TSWONS...never a truer statement made about the very nature of a musical genre. Ed
Northern Soul Uk Posted March 28, 2017 Author Posted March 28, 2017 No I agree it's not Northern Soul and I would never rate it as that, but it was a big tune in the Mod clubs which the Central was before it was a Soul club
Tomangoes Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 (edited) So it was a nostalgia night for the central? Not specifically a Northern or rare soul night. I used to go to the central between 78 and 82 at least once a month, but only on the Saturday northern soul nights etc, and it reminds me of the 100 club, very atmospheric when full. The fullest I've ever known the central was just a few years ago when Terry Callier RIP played there and it was packed solid with stoodents... Time a changing... Edited March 29, 2017 by tomangoes Miss spell callier
Northern Soul Uk Posted March 29, 2017 Author Posted March 29, 2017 (edited) No, it was a soul alldayer, but one of the DJs took it on himself to play it. His choice, suffered the wrath a bit afterwards tho'. Have you not been since the Terry Callier night then? to on of the alldayers? Edited March 29, 2017 by Northern Soul UK
Tomangoes Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 There is a song by the smiths that springs to mind. Not been to the central since the TC show. A million excuses but still the same outcome, not been. Glad it's having a revival. Ed
Northern Soul Uk Posted April 8, 2017 Author Posted April 8, 2017 As promised, a clean recording of this excellent track. The Acetate is in great condition as you'll hear on the video.

Northern Soul Uk Posted April 9, 2017 Author Posted April 9, 2017 I think Wully Bully, not Northern Soul obviously, but there's lots of 'Not Northern Soul' gets played on the scene these days, and it was an old Mod tune that did get played in the early clubs pre the Northern Soul tag.

Northern Soul Uk Posted April 10, 2017 Author Posted April 10, 2017 (edited) I s'pose it's difficult for the younger ones when they hear a tune at a soul night that they may have heard in pubs or at a commercial disco somewhere, to appreciate it's history. There are many tunes like that, that at the time they were big were not classed as Soul, let alone Northern Soul, but they did play their part on the development of the scene Edited April 10, 2017 by Northern Soul UK 1
Roburt Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 Yep, stuff like Bruce Channel's "Mr bus driver", "Scratchy" + Wind and Mr Bloe's versions of "Groovin with ..." were all played in soul clubs in the 60's (very early 1970 for the Mr Bloe) . . . Wind of course hiding the id of ultra soulful early 60's crooner Tony Orlando ... . . ... AND OF COURSE ... so much pop crap was played at the Casino that's it would take forever to name all the sh*t that was played there. Back to the soulful Tony Orlando (& yes, I know two great Detroit soul ladies teamed up with him in Dawn in the 70's) .... live on your local cinema stage in 62 . . . 1
