dean jj Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 Lets go back, way back, back into time...... Three questions: When did this behaviour [on the rare soul scene] start? What records inspired it: I always think of 'Tainted Love' but there must be many more? When did it fade out? I remember it at late Ritz all-dayers but not at Morecombe or Stafford but I could be wrong. Anybody got a memory or two to share. dean
Nickinstoke Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 I can remember a large circle forming to do a special clap to Mary Wells "What's easy for two", around 1968/9 1
Zed1 Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 I'd think you've got more chance of catching the Clap than hearing a clap on todays scene..... 1
Rhino Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 can remember "love is a good foundation" at the pier people clapping and a few other songs but did slowly drifted away when pier shut and moved to the carelton inn. personally miss it used to be great to here it added to the songs and atmosphere. 2
Popular Post Mike Posted March 23, 2017 Popular Post Posted March 23, 2017 always thought of clapping as a 'unique' sort of group communal remixing! as in at its peak the way it could change completely the way some records 'worked' was quite extraordinary! 6

Geeselad Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 interesting parallel on the early house scene many used to do fast, double clapping, as in latin music, usually in an instrumental passage.
Soulstu Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 Still plenty of clapping today at oldies venues.... Cause your mine - "dadadadadadada CLAP!", Outro to That's Not love, "You Should have held on...CLAP!....a little tighter" seems to be Wigan oldies and earlier though - any later discoveries with the clap? 1

Have a quick search P You are right Pete, last one was early last year I think. I quite like to see / hear a collective clap to a record, what sometimes I find slightly irritating is the random clappers who clap away during any record for what appears no apparent reason, especially if my backs to the dancefloor and they have what I'd call a firecracker clap. Obvious candidate as far as records go Crying over You 1
Thinksmart Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 The Vel-vets - I've Got To Find Me Somebody has always been a monster clapper in the East Midlands. 'I'm So Happy' too with the big single clap near the start. 1
Stubbsy Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 Can't beat a good clap Here's one - Yvonne Baker "You Didn't Say A Word" 1

Rick Scott Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 Great topic Dean, I loved the hand clapping in the early days of my visits to Wigan Casino during its first year (stopped going after that) and the Blackpool Mecca too. Then we had The Cleethorpes Pier during its short couple of years and of course The Cleethorpes Winter Gardens. There were many other venues at that time that had this wonderful Hand Clapping at all the right moments in a song, why or when it stopped is a mystery to me as the atmosphere was electric at the time. Just may be that some just could not be bothered and eventually it died out, would be great to see (hear) it revived, wouldn't take much i wouldn't have thought. Clapping seems to be now reserved for the end of a tune being played that was well received or with the showing of appreciation of a DJ playing something nice for the first time or a less played quality oldie, and of course at the end of a good set being played to show how much it had been enjoyed and appreciated which also is very welcome, that for what it is worth that is my take on it, interesting point would be looking back would be did the dancers hand clap while dancing or was it just the ones off the dance floor observing or both, fast hand clapping and dancing must be quite hard do do at the same time and keeping in step with the track being danced to would be very difficult i would have thought.
Local Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 (edited) Ultimate clapping record ever imho................ Blackpool Mecca circa 72 ..................FRED HUGHES "BABY BOY" group remixing on a different level, the record just ain't half as good without the handclaps. Edited March 23, 2017 by local 1
Pga1 Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 Hiya, the intro to moody woman is always good for a dose of clapping. Cheers 2
Popular Post Zed1 Posted March 24, 2017 Popular Post Posted March 24, 2017 Station Rd, 1978, 4am and I'm on a full dance floor clapping and dancing to 'You Better Believe it Baby' - Joe Tex. Didn't get any better really. ........ and No, the ending never caught me out, Honest. 4
Ged Parker Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 Broke my first decent watch (a JW Benson) hand clapping at the Casino. One end of the leather strap went and off it shot across the dance floor. I got it back but it never worked again. 1
Peter99 Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 Clapping was still very popular in the early 80's - this was a good clapper that had the crowd going. Modern soul clapping!c 1
Pga1 Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 Hiya, larry Houston still has em clapping these days. Cheers
Corbett80 Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 Bernie Williams / Gene Woodbury seems to inspire the clap

Thinksmart Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 The Jades - I'm Where It's At is literally made for clapping to at the start and in the break. Also Mel Wynn & The Rhythm Aces - Stop Sign. A clappin' Casino classic. 1
Autumnstoned Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 Still lots of happy clappers ( me included ) at The 100 Club. Few that spring to mind are:- Charlene & The Soul Serenaders - Can You Win Ben E King - Getting To Me Cresa Watson - Sweet Temptation 1
Constellation161 Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 I can never clap in the right place when Ace Specrum Don't send nobody else is played.

Soul16 Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 This one gets my vote, used to be guaranteed to get me and the other clappers on their feet. 2
Pga1 Posted March 25, 2017 Posted March 25, 2017 Hiya, one I love is me and my mate terry ( wheel goer) is stepping through imaginary frame to ' steppingg out of the picture' and that little fast round of applause ( applause not for us by the way) hundred club thing but great. Cheers 1
Russ Vickers Posted March 25, 2017 Posted March 25, 2017 100 Club still has a fair few clappers, in the right breaks I may add, always tell the divs, they have no idea where to clap or where you spin or drop....dead give away.....in an atmospheric venue, it creates an amazing atmosphere for sure. Russ 2
Seano Posted March 25, 2017 Posted March 25, 2017 Always loved the atmosphere the clapping created, totally recognise the tailing off of its popularity, but it does still hang on, and for me is one of the things I can still contribute to, never having been much good at spins, and with stamina and knees not what they once were! I take the point made earlier in the thread about claps that might come out of the blue from someone dancing near you, but maybe that's a personal response to how the record takes you, can't say it's ever spoiled things for me (but maybe it was me doing it!). 3
