Guest BabyBoyAndMyLass Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 Listening to a record and had to focus really hard as I was 90% sure I could hear Banjo picking in it! After a couple of listens I became 100% convinced, when I listened till the end I can clearly hear it in the fade out. One of my favourite things about soul is the interesting instrumentation, Vinnie Bell Coral electric sitars quite common (Archie Bell, Freda Payne, Benny Troy etc) Xylophones and Glockenspiels often heard as well as numerous different interesting instruments but first time I heard some good ole down country Banjer on a soul track! Gotta get me some down-home country-Bluegrass soul! Fantastic!
Geeselad Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 yeah know what you mean about the banjo, but could be just a guitar with a weird open tuning or a didldy bo. love xylophones too, one of the distinctive things I remember about hearing my first northern sounds after been raised on a diet of rock guitar as a kid I thought that sounds really weird, think it was 'what' the xylophones really got me hooked.
The Yank Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 There's a banjo featured in the break on the long version of Al Downing's "I'll Be Holding On".
Mike Lofthouse Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Not my favourite version of the song but probably the most prominent banjo I have ever heard on a Soul record.....
Jimmyjames Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 There's a banjo on the dan penn fame demo for rainbow road too.
Mike Lofthouse Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Dan Penn would complain about Rick Hall and his banjo - maybe its him? 1
Andreas B Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Doesn't more down-home soulful than this one. Pure Louisiana Swamp-Soul, dig that squeeze box!
Guest BabyBoyAndMyLass Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Hell! Really started something here! Some of the best soul I heard! From Banjer pickin' right down the line to some sweet Louisiana Cajun Zydeco soul! Thanks lads, some seriously good soul!
