Davenpete Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Loved this since I first heard it a few years ago, something deeply charming about it - cheap as chips on eBay - though I've not got round to getting one yet. Dx
Guest son of stan Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 I wonder if people pass this over because its Tavares and just think its a common or cheap record..? Believe me, it's not. It never turns up and once those copies on discogs / ebay are gone they're gone
Chris Turnbull Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Didn't know this and loved it first play, thanks - just picked one up on discogs for a couple of quid, proper bargain 1

Peter99 Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Its a super soul record. Would sit well in any DJ set. Just shows that class does not always have to = lots of cash. Pete 3
Concrete Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Loved Freda Payne since Band of Gold (Tavares ain't too bad either)
Soul Shrews Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Well thought of for many a year round our way too Cheers Paul
Ian Dewhirst Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 A big fave of mine since it was first issued. Quite simply one of the the best 'duets' ever released. Such a great, great song and it's unfathomable how it was never a hit or how it's never been covered. Brilliant! Ian D 1
Ian Stacey Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 not a wonder its been given a miss its cheap for the reason its boring 2

Guest Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 The price just shot up! Tavares under rated soul band... remember Madam Butterfly alongside this as well as Whodunit etc

Jaco Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Vastly underrated outfit. Responsible for one of the best tracks ever - Let me heal the bruises from a great album - Madame Butterfly This is a quality track that I've known for years and definitely needs more airing. 2

Geoff Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 I think it was Ian Dewhirst who mentioned this in a post on SS a few years ago. I'd not heard it but loved it and bought a copy, nice and cheap. I've played it out, at the MonuMental Soul weekender and other places, always popular. But there will be some who will decry it as "disco". And of course it being cheap doesn't help either.
Soul Shrews Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 (edited) Also got a release here in Holland Cheers Paul Edited January 7, 2017 by soul shrews More text 1
Pga1 Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 Hiya, nice bit of happy pop soul - tavares 'being with you' cheers
Guest son of stan Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 Anyone know if it ever came out on US 7 at all? Or came out on UK issue? Quick image search only shows the UK promo and what looks like a Euro one. Can't say I have done extensive investigations but always had a hunch for some reason, that this one wasn't properly released / fell through the cracks for some reason.. Sounds like a club and possible chart hit but seems obscure given the artists involved and its obvious quality and appeal to either market.
givemesoul Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 i wouldn't buy it even for 10p pure disco .............end of story 2

Wicked Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 Rather listen to this than crap like 'Tears of joy' or 'When we get there' 1
Guest Soulskate70 Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Thanks for posting this.... I purchased a copy straight away after hearing it as it's right up my street.... I didn't realise I already knew the track, but as a Tavares only version with no Freda Payne vocal... Such a great track, and for the record I love Disco!!!!

I wondered the same as my copy is also a demo, so I had a dig around. It appears that it was a UK only release (or UK and Netherlands to be accurate). Released around October 1977 when it first showed up in the Blues & Soul chart. The UK release of the Best of Tavares LP has this track on it but the US release does not. While digging around I also discovered that Tavares had recorded a version of Strangers In Dark Corners, one of my favourite Johnny Bristol tracks. You never know what you'll turn up! 3
Yos Zoul Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 (edited) They also did a pretty good Edgar Winter cover: Edited January 11, 2017 by Yos Zoul 2
Harrogatesoul Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Tavares suffer in the eyes and ears of many because they happened to have some success! God forbid! SOUL collectors know different. Some fantastic tracks mentioned. I'd add 'I Hope She Chooses Me' 'Watchin The woman's Movement' Great soul and cheap as chips. 3

Guest Soulskate70 Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 I actually consider the 12-inch version of Heavem Must Be Missing an Angel to be a dance floor masterpeiece. Sometimes a band are popular for a reason..... They're actually VERY good....
Shinehead Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Tavares lp Hard Core Poetry has always been a fave of mine. Rumours by Freda is also a great track. 1
Popular Post Enricoacm1899 Posted January 12, 2017 Popular Post Posted January 12, 2017 (edited) Anyone mentioned "Too late"? This is a true modern soul masterpiece IMHO. And cheap as chips, also. I also do like "Positive Forces" from them. Edited January 12, 2017 by EnricoACM1899 4
Pezer Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 Their first album "Check it out" has several Johnny Bristol penned tracks including the brilliant "Never say never again".Definitely my favourite Tavares track. 2
Popular Post Roburt Posted January 16, 2017 Popular Post Posted January 16, 2017 When they played the Prestatyn Weekender, I was tasked with writing their bio for the web site & programme. I made the theme of my piece ... a great soul group who also had disco hits .... when the guys read it they were over the moon & I couldn't do anything wrong in their eyes all that weekend .... I asked them early on the Friday if they would consider performing one of their Chubby & the Turnpikes tracks. After they realised these were still popular with UK soulies, they asked their UK music director (who had always led / provided their British musicians on previous visits) to source the music for a C&T song and to include it in the show. He was an arrogant prick & said yes but just continued to arrange the show as he wanted it to go. Anyway, the time came for them to perform & there was no score organised for any C&T number ... they guys weren't too phased though .. they mentioned their previous existence during their performance & sang a couple of snippets of those old songs accapella (which went down well) ... NICE GUYS ALL ROUND .. BTW, my fave album by them is the mega 'Madam Butterfly' .... Tavares + Sam Dees ... nothing is better ...... 4

Sounds like a club and possible chart hit but seems obscure given the artists involved and its obvious quality and appeal to either market. If, as appears to be the case, the record was only issued in the UK and Europe, it is more than likely because it was released to promote the "The Best of Tavares LP" that you can see on the scan of the 7" in the first post on this thread. The track "I Wanna See You You Soon" only appeared in the UK & European versions of the LP , not in the US release of the LP. Plus the fact that both acts were more popular in the UK & Europe than they were in their own country made even more sense for the company to release a duet single like that and look to get a chart hit in the UK ...
