I'm still a baby, never went to Casino, used to go The Vine in Hanley to the punk bands instead, only started mid 8ts, there's plenty here who were there at the start, UTJ, Mecca, WC, Wheel, Torch, they're all still learning. The canon is huge there are literally thousands of records, very few know them all, although my lass seems to have a pretty good grip on it, there were many regional variations in what was played and variations from one event to another, you never get bored with soul music, there's 'oldies' 'newies' '60s newies' 70s oldies' 'modern' crossover' 'funky' 'gritty'... If you dig The Belles and Bobby Garrett you 'get it' it's a great scene, very friendly although you get some scary villains types (not myself of course ) but it's the friendliest scene there is, don't worry about the clothes either, just wear what you want, events is where it's at, the records are monstrous on the big systems!

Guest Carl Dixon Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 BrianB Not certain. It was last year sometime, but for sure at a London event. That's where I heard the title of the song broadcast to the attendees. Love it. Great Philly track I would say. Thom Bell arranged/1970. The outro is exceptional, great to dance to. https://www.facebook.com/events/142249199516913/

He wrote a few other songs as well. That inspirations track is one of my favourites as well, the drumming is fantastic. Does Verlie know who played the drums on the track by any chance? Dave Banks

Dave Banks lead singer/writer on The Inspirations (Milwaukee group) - Your Wish is my command is William (Billy) Miller...also have contact with him he was in the following groups Billy & Betty, Billy & The Hi-liners, The Soulful Twins and Brethren.
Guest Carl Dixon Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 (edited) Hi Dave William Miller is saying he sang lead on the cut and wrote the song. It looks like something went down with the label at the time with reference to whose name went to print. He even clarified the middle 8 lyrics that I could not fathom out. Also Mr Miller advises that V Rice was the wife of the label owner. In addition the label sites BMI as the US song writing collection agency, yet the song is not registered with them and neither is Verlie Rice. Out of the 27 registered 'Your wish is my command' references, none are connected. 'Tony's Tunes' crops up but that song is not mentioned. Similarly to Sandbag Records hacking off a few bars of 'You don't love me' where Robert Paladino guitar strums the original intro in the studio etc to find out on release it's missing. It takes things to another level where the original recording trumps the original vinyl doesn't it! The full original version of YDLM has been released and licensed legally on 45, but I have not heard it played anywhere yet. In effect I equate that to an OVO for the original recording if that makes sense whether it was 1967 or today. I love trivia like this and getting to the bottom of it. Earlier this year I woke up singing YWIMC one night and did not have a clue what it was, the bit where he wails 'Believe in me'. Thats' all I sang, then I tried to find out what it was and eventually heard it at an event. It was as though it was calling me for some reason. Then I found Billy Miller had posted his email and phone number on a YouTube clip of it. I dropped him a line and we communicated. I have even tried to get a few promoters to investigate bringing him over as he is still performing! This story is not over. It's a fabulous song with terrific hooks and works a treat. Then, I was at Skegness this year and the first CD I saw for sale had the track on it - the first one. The story evolves. I would love to do a cover version, because it moves me and there is a story. But, how on earth can I beat the original? Edited December 9, 2016 by Carl Dixon
El Corol Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Current spare room spins: Soul Children - Give Em' Love - Stax The Globetrotters - Cheer Me Up - RCA Viola Wills- I've Got News For You - Supreme The Raelets - Its Almost Here - Tangerine (Backing track is very similar to Freddie North - You Got To hold On - Abet) Young - Holt Trio - Ain't There Something Money Can't Buy - Brunswick 3 of which should be easily picked up for under a tenner.
