What an idiot never thought of looking on youtube. Was hell bent on finding the written lyrics.

That's a decent recording so you should be able to get most of the words mate.

Its a super soul record for sure.

Pete

its one of my favorites. Went to my works  xmas do last night and the DJ played some NS. Me and the missus just looked at each other and smiled then hit the dance floor. whether it looked good or not is a different story but for that 3 minutes it was amazing. Haha

This recording is pretty muddy, too.  I have it on both labels, and it is tough to hear about half the words.  And the lead singer has good diction, and she is singing in Standard American English, NOT Ebonics!  (which wouldn't have been a problem for me, as I grew up (more or less) in The Chicago Ghetto), but may have otherwise been a problem for a British listener.

The other factor is that there are not very many different words used in this song.  I realise now, that I've been listening to it for just about 50 years, without knowing about half the words.  But, then, I've always admitted that I've never cared about words in songs, only the overall sound.  It doesn't matter, in this case,  as the gist of this song is clear, - the young lady doesn't want her lover to leave her.

Theoretically, you could purchase the words and music from the music publishing company.  Despite Florence Greenberg being deceased, someone owns Flomar Music, as its rights have still been renewed with BMI up to today.  The main business of music publishing was originally to sell sheet music with lyrics to people who wanted to play and sing it for recreation.  Originally, this song was published by Barry Despenza, but, he sold half the publishing rights to Flomar, in the Wand pressing and distribution deal.  And, i think that only Flomar has been renewing the rights for the past many years.  So, they probably own full rights now.

Florence Greenberg sold the rights to Flo Mar in two tranches firstly in the mid 60s and after Marvin had left, the balance in the early 70s. Since then they've changed hands a number of times. The only viable lead I reckon would be Tom Dorsey.

To be honest i've listen to it a lot since posting this and this line is the only bit i just couldnt work out.

In fact ive just listened to it again and theres something missing

"Oh baby, I'll change in every way, (two or three words here) if you tell me you'll stay"

Sounds like

"Oh baby, I'll change in every way, Just for you, if you tell me you'll stay"

Here you go Ianc1971

Please find the reply that I have just recieved regarding the lyric's to "Please Stay" from the songs composer Mr Tom Dorsey (straight from the horses mouth etc)

Regards

Dave

Hi Dave Good to hear from you,

The lyrics from the record to "Please Stay" are:

I can't give you up

No I can't let you go

I can't let you leave

'cause I still need you so

So, baby please don't leave

stay I'm begging you please

help, I'm drowning in my tears

cause my love for you

is burning in my heart

You're gonna miss my love

If you should go away

But, you'll thank your lucky stars

If you decide to stay

Oh, baby I'll change in every way

If you tell me you'll stay

Help! I'm begging on my knees

Pleading if you would help me please

Help! Please stay

Please stay

The reason I say "from the record" is because some words were changed from the original.

Hope this helped.

Tom Dorsey

Cheers Louise.  I thought for a moment there your hours on the ouija board had put you in contact with the spirit of Florence Greenberg or something

Very sad lyrics they are.

I've always struggled hearing lyrics clearly in a lot of records. Someone posted a while ago about the lyrics in the Formations At The Top Of The Stairs and I found it brought a whole new element to the record listening to it while reading the lyrics.

Same for this one, its unbelievable really how different the record sounds when you know what the singer is actually singing!

One of my favourite all time records and as usual I have been singing along with words that make no sense and bear no relation to the actual lyrics.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU ALL SO VERY MUCH I will copy these and put them in the sleeve of my pristine Dispenza copy

Is this a one off copy? I have only heard of the Despenza and Wand labels for this 45
