4000+ Northern Soul Record Collection Auction News Item

4000+ Northern Soul Record Collection Auction News Item magazine cover

Passed up to Soul Source by a member, word about a news article currently being run via the North East Uk based The Chronicle Newspaper website http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk that may be of interest.

The article is all about a collection of 4000+ northern 45s up for auction via North Shields auctioneers Featonby’s on December 5 2016.

The member has been informed on whose collection it may be but as the details are not definite and information is hard to find via the websites this does needs confirming before publishing.

Information such as auction details does seem a bit scarce on it all, so a good dig may be needed, but anyway here's the links

News Article on The Chronicle Live website

'A huge archive of Northern soul records amassed by a Tyneside devotee is to be auctioned amid international interest

The collector has been described as a legend in his field and would fly to the United States to find records and then have them shipped back to this country,” said auctioneer Darren...'

What a strange way to sell them ! There doesn't seem to be a list of the contents of the boxes, or even how many records each box contains, just saying 4000 45's doesn't really help. With a 25.5% buyers premium also to take into account how would you know what to bid?  I suppose if it's close enough distance wise then it'd be worth a journey to go look, but that's gonna cut down the potential buyers, or will it be just like a gathering of the major and minor dealers?
I remember previous collections auctioned via this route and they raised a tiny percentage of what I would have expected. If I knew whose collection this is I'd have definitely advised them to sell them via a different route. Bonkers to me !

If this is who I think it is then there will be some great records in there .  I've been buying from him for years after getting a tip from a fellow collector .

The clues are in the newspaper article and there was a thread on here about him earlier in the year .

If I had some spare cash I'd be up for a couple of boxes blind

It is Johns

there are 120 in each box

95% are rubbish early 60s he could never sell or major label big sellers that are neither rnb or soul

the odd pop record

any of note are bootlegs

only two of the boxes are worth any bid and they contain a small quantity of reissues and stick on bootlegs

Are you willing to share if I send my email address or are you restricted for some reason?

I heard about this on Thursday and did some digging.

The post above just about sums up my thoughts.

What a load of bollocks

records are listed and available ftom auctioneers

nothing unusual about splitting lots in an auction

Estate not left to anybody

Any question to them about origin gets an honest answer

I clicked on more details, and it didn't even show quantity in each box, let alone a list of titles. Can you put up a link to the titles list please

Majority is blues ,doo wop, 60s, few motown bit of reggae, Northern mainly reissues or boots all mixed up in the lots & yes it is the remnants  from Johns collection spoke to a few who have been through these when John was alive & not a great deal of any to note  sale starts at 11.00am 25% buyer commission on top , I printed them off for our soul night last night for collectors to have a look at no big records on original of what we could see

I thought i had seen it it all until today that is. We all think ebay is bad.......... well it was a day of my life wasted.

Most of the 45 lots hit well over £200 each most were in fact between £300-£500. Lot 339 hit £1700 + 22.5% buyer commission £2082.50! The Tan Geers, Ruby Andrews and Sam Fletcher Bootlegs. UNBELIVEABLE. :lol:What have I missed in this lot? I am sure that most of this lot were reissues.

Remember most of these lots were reissues and possibly old soul pack records that could never be sold as a lot of the titles were familiar.

Well done Featonby's Auction Room, you hit the Jackpot.

I was there all day and did bid on a lot of them but then it just went daft with one person buying most of what was for sale. I should have got the hint when I noticed the said person unfolding cardboard boxes for 45's before the records had been sold haha.

Hi Kev,

I have never seen so many bootleg / reissues. Some i've never seen before and some looked like a DIY effort.  An unusual lot indeed.

I registered , got the spreadsheet sent and watched it unfold on-line.  Quickly realized that each lot was taking a minute so it was going to be nearly 5 o'clock before it started. They even paused the auction at that point!  must of frustrated a few up there.  So glad I didn't travel up.

Who was that buying virtually everything at the back of the room i didn't recognise him

Only bid on couple of lots as you say wasted day but we had a laugh in the pub opposite with Dicka & Steve telling of times they tried to buy records off John & come away with nowt , I know how they felt after today , John was nearly present at the auction as Dicka has his ashes in the boot of his car

The fella buying them was a familiar face to me. But I cannot recall where from? A record dealer imo.

One thing is for sure he will struggle to make any profit on all of what was purchased.

Looking at the crazy rices boots and re-issues are fetching on ebay and the rest I recon at £2.00 a record there's money to be made by someone. Just look at Comedy Sale Of The Day in look at your box.

We're all laughing at whoever paid that for a pile of crap but i think the dodgy dealers out there will have a field.

Ellusions, Ruby Andrews, Otus Lee and Tranells in here also. Would need to have seen the records to know how many boots there were. Also plenty of records never actually booted in Lot 339. So many boots in the box, it's hard to accept there may have been good original vinyl also.
