Guest Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 (edited) Wigan Casino mid 70's. Al Kent "The Way You Been Acting Lately". Yum Yums "Big Thing". Ronnie McNeir "Sitting In My Class" Gerri Granger "I Go To Pieces" Phil Loman "Rock Me". Poppies "Pain In My Heart". Del Larks "Job Opening" Jeanette Harper "Pick Me Up And Put Me In Your Pocket" I wrote down these that I liked, and with some detective work found out what they were called! Mattbolton Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 First record that I came away with from my first Ritz Allnighter was actually 'The Night'. Funny isn't it how those sounds hit you first and stay with you the longest. Though playing records to young people every week I find it's still the same Other notable retrospective mentions from that inaugural niter include Frankie Karl and Yvonne Baker.... the James Bond record.
Hornet Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 The closer she gets - John Trevars reminds me of niters of the past but wouldn't know what year never mind the 1st niter !
Guest Polyvelts Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 Fantastic Johnny C - Don't depend on me. Wigan Friday oldies 1980. Couldn't get it out of my head !

Soulcarp Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 Sure I've comment or post this somewhere else but just haunting waiting to go down to the wheel and this drifting out when the door open "Elgins - and hearing these words "put your self in my place for just a little while" just blew me away ? Just a young 17yr old never been to Manchester scary but love it 1
Guest Spain pete Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 I remember the first record at the last nighter l went to but that's my secret ????
Vadnochka Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 penned a reply about Gene Latter / Mecca and all sorts of things - wasn't signed in so lost content - can't be arsed to repeat tonight. Steve
Guest chorleybloke Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 First nighter was Wigan late 74.... out of the thousands that got hardwired into my head, one of these two always seemed to be on as I went through the double doors... Younghearts & Belles. Still play em both out to this day.

Paul R Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 As I walked into Vavas in about Early Sept 73 as a 15 year old, the first record I hear was Alice Clarke, You Hit me. Other massive memories of the night were Mel Williams Can It Be Me, Jackie Follett, There's A Moment, Timothy Wilson, Love Is Like An Itching, and the Rolling Stones version of Under My Thumb! which I actually thought was a bit surreal at a soul night. So I guess it was around prior to 78. Other than that with the Del Larks I don't know who first played it? Anyone? 1

Pretty sure this was a 74/75, maybe a bit earlier, Mecca play from our old friend Ian Levine. One things for sure it was bloody hard to get yer mitts on back then. It might have been Colin but I think he was too busy inventing what is now called the modern/crossover scene at the time, so it might have been a bit too "northern" for him. Ay up my mate Hope all is well. My memory is very poor at best but I'm not sure that I remember hearing the Del Larks played out ever. That's a real strange one - particularly given the story behind the song. thanks for the info Kegsy. Pete

Pete As I said, it was and still is, a bloody rare item, it wouldn't surprise me if it didn't get played out because of this, DJ's just didn't have it.. There's only one original on popsike for a start.

Slightly off topic apologies? Is just folk lore or true that John Vincent used to play the vocal then the instrumental one after the other of The Del Larks?? Cheers Martyn

Bruv Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 The one that sticks out for me is Al De Lory - Right On at the Casino, the clapping along to almost every beat just blew me away.

Alan Walls Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 Wigan 5th Oldies Anniversary was my first niter, Feb '81. 'Night Owl' was the only record played I recognised so I guess that fits the bill. Not so cool... 1
Marktsoulman Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 Wigan 1977, Walked into my first All Nighter at Balcony level and looked down to a full floor dancing to the VanDykes "Save My Love For A Rainy Day". When the clapping started, I nearly fell over the top!! Awesome memory that changed my life!! 1

Peter99 Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 Great thread this. To extend it a little I only went to Wigan twice. 81 I guess, to be blown away by Richards set - all great records, 60's and 70's. The one I was singing for days after - Search This World by Tyrone Edwards. Obviously I Need Love by Daybreak. Best set I've ever heard. Pete
Sheldonsoul Posted December 2, 2016 Author Posted December 2, 2016 (edited) I remember one of the first times I went searling playing al de lory discotheque alibi ( Harley hatcher soul hustler) it just mesmerised me totally it sounded awesome, thing is 90% of tunes played sounded awesome coming out of those speakers. Was totally converted to the dark side - modern became my favourite but still enjoyed quality 60's. Although I have to admit that I never enjoyed the sound of the 60's mafia - Keb and Guy. Those records just didn't resonate with me at all - maybe one or two. Did we bump into each other...............who knows. Back in the day I just danced all night. Pete
