Was reading the book casino by dave shaw a couple of days ago and it jogged up a few only memories of around 77 when I was 16 and first walked up those sweaty sticky smelly stairs for the first time at Wigan and standing in awe the first seconds I walked in the main room. And it reminded me of a few tunes from that first night joey heatherton, Paula Durante,Lou Ragland, Andre brassuer !! But one song stuck to mind the following morning on that train journey home all I could remember was the chorus , stop your breaking my heart stop . Took me a few weeks to find out it was bobby diamond it's not a truefull soul record but as a lad I was gobsmaked by it, which brings me to the question at your first allnighter did you have one song played that night which truly stuck  to mind on your introduction to ns

Don Ray and Cecil Washington. Played back to back if I remember correctly at Derby Assembly Rooms circa 1979. Still like Don Ray although Cecil Washington is in a class of its own. One of the best soul records ever recorded/played. Haunting, atmospheric song not matched by many.

Also seem to recall Sue Lynn and Tony Basil - awesome dance track.

Cecil Washington completely blew us away pounding out of wigans speakers, possibly one of the best ever played at the casino

Gaz. The soul police have made Bobby Diamond and Joey Heatherton  public enemy number one along with the likes of the Shakers, Frankie Valli. Innocence, good times, etc etc. Best time of my life. Fcuk the soul police.what do they know. If you dig deep enough, they know Stafford and think the world started and stopped there.

Steve

It's interesting Ste that many of those Tracks I used to love back then I've since been told were in fact just White Pop Crap........ If I'd known this back then Eh!.

Nottingham Palais all-nighter, 1975, (to be honest not sure if it was 74 or 75),  So Is The Sun. Remember being mesmerised by the dancing , which was a whole new ball game to the youth club shananigens previously experienced and practiced. Felt out of my league by a long way. Second strong record memory was Idle Few People That's Why, but the memory plays tricks.

Sad thing is several young promising 16 year olds I was with that night are dead now.

I got the fever..Prophets .. shook the walls (and me) at L'Ambassadeur in Bradford

Quite a few, including that one, from the same venue, but the first one I forked for was Ad Libs Nothings Worse Than Being Alone mid/late 1971 methinks.

My first niter was Wigan. Prior to that I'd only been exposed to a handful of youth club sounds, Judy Street, Franki Valli et al. My most vivid memory was the three before eight. I couldn't quite believe I was in the casino, with all it's magnificence, dancing to the three before eight. A dream come true. A night full of tracks I'd never heard before and its hard to bring one to mind, but the three before eight felt almost like a rite of passage or an inauguration! "I've really been here, Wigan Casino!". Well, I was only 16, fresh faced and easily impressed! ?

Another white record, Jay & the Americans - living above your head Keele late 80s, my first nighter, and this was just a killer song, I also looked thru the record sellers for bargains, which there probably was back then but out of reach to a 18 year old !

Furys - I'm satisfied with you - Keymen & Art Freeman - Slipping around - Red UK Atlantic - Up the junction - Crewe - Early '72 - Both a fiver - seemed like a fortune - little did I know 45yrs later!! -  Alan Day up the ladder to the decks. What a club / bangers and beans for breakfast to get round the licensing laws into Sunday - Gene Latter @ Donnie Elbert live - cartoons in the back room / settees and all, nicking milk off the doorstep Sunday morning before heading back to Loughborough to prepare to unleash the latest acquisitions on the Fantasia crowd.

HAPPY DAYS !!!

Not a nighter but I remember the first track I heard at the Mecca was "Little Queenie"

Could make it out from the muffled sound as you came up the escalator.

Hairs on the back of the neck moment.

Unfortunately the record that stands out in my mind from my first trip to Wigan (march 78) is Muriel Day... I reckon it was played about 4 times that night

Ive had nightmares about it ever since...

Has to be Duke Browner.  Yes, I know it's a cliche, but it was the first sound I heard at a "proper"northern do (Top Rank Hanley early 73) and yes the seemingly random claps in unison just blew my mind.  I knew I was part of something very special.  Other biggies that day?  Bob Relf, Clara Ward, Rat Race, Jerry Williams, Howard Guyton.... I could go on and on, but Duke was the first I think.

Peterborough Fleet All-Nighter, October '78. Four hours on the 'National' bus for a 75 mile journey, then another couple of hours before it opened.

Hammy in the Long Room playing Susan Coleman "The Age of the Wolf"
