i always loved Mose.

i can't stand "snooty", "intellectual" jazz nerds that compare everything to "A Love Supreme", and denigrate stuff like this (i lived 6 years in San Francisco with jazz snobs and argued about him all of the time). Allison's ability to weave blues and jazz in an accessible, finger-popping manner was amazing. he had a mediocre (at best!) voice, but sang with so much verve and aplomb, you are just drawn into every lyrical story.

and the fact that he was skinny white cat holding his own singing about toiling on "parchman farm" (a brutal all-black prison in Mississippi that he would have not survived one day in) and covering willie dixon songs is pretty legit.

favorite track of his - "new ground" - am gonna spin this next time i DJ...
